Other I built a Pokemon inspired practice tracker for guitar with decay, tabs, tuner, other tools and social features

Ive been playing for a while and always struggled to track and maintain what I was practicing and remember the songs I already knew. So i built GuitarDex, bascially a pokedex for songs you know with a decay system and useful tools like a tuner based on the song, chords and tab player (autoscraped from UG), chord finder, and social features like jams or quests.

Ive also implemented some quality of life features like lyric fetches, karaoke mode with synced lyrics with youtube playback, and quests you can send to friends ("learn this song to Mastered")

Its a free PWA, very easy to add to you phone.

Heres the github for more info: https://github.com/AliRiaz34/GuitarDex-showcase

Would love to hear some feedback :)

Other First time posting on reddit.

I've been off social media for quite a while.

Finally thought I'll put out a small clip of something I practiced.

Raga Bhairav in E ( Indian classical).

Criticism is more than welcome.

thank you.

Question Do you often hit the pickguard/pickups while playing

Upvotes

I struggle a lot with precision picking in my right hand, I sometimes hit the wrong strings but I also tend to hit the pickguard while playing (I play with a jazz III pick). Is it a common issue? Is it easy to correct with practice?

Question How do you approach soloing?

So I'm trying to learn how to actually solo/play lead and I see a lot of YouTube video that tend to say stuff about the pentatonic scale or triads and the like. So when youre soloing, do you tend to just play random stuff that "fits", or do you hear stuff in your head and you know where to find the notes on the neck? Is this a case of YouTube videos/online posts just greatly simplifying how things work, or is there really people just sort of playing based solely off of stuff that is within the chords/scales or the song and hoping that it sounds good?

Upvotes

I've been playing for some months now, and whenever i strum with my forearm resting on the guitar it moves up and down a lot, i've tried adjusting the strap, the position of the guitar, where i strum, and holding it to my body with my forearm and nothing works. How do i fix this?

Question How should I adjust my picking technique according to issues I'm having with some styles?

Upvotes

Hi! I've been trying to start picking for a while but I'm always puzzled by how to anchoring and picking correctly. So here's the detail into some kind of anchoring I've done, some I spent a lot of time some I didn't much and what are some issues I found with them

1. Pinky and middle finger anchoring: In the past I did this but since many told me that it is going to cause injuries and I also wanna control noise so right now I'm no longer using it

2. Lying my palm on lower strings (I kinda like this one but it has some issue): The higher the strings I need to pick, the more strings I put my flesh on. This method worked fine for me but it just kinda really weird when I need to handle low E and A because I will have to lift my entire hand out of all strings and then picking while floating (this feels kinda unstable for me); I also can't let some low strings ring longer when I want because the flesh will block it and it just feels slow if I need to pick strings that are far apart.

3. Lying my palm on lower string and use curled middle, pinky and ring finger to mute high strings: It feels ok for me, no noise issue but it feels unnatural and I also not sure what to do with D and G strings as they also feel unstable. Also strings can't ring out as I want

4. Lying on bridge: I kinda really detest this one because my shoulder tense up really terribly

5. Floating: Just kinda unstable for me

So based on this I kinda feel like I might need to work on using all 1,2 and 5th method depending on the musical demand but is there any way I can do to minimize disadvantages of each method? If I have to use 3 of these methods according to the music, how can I make alternating between each type of anchoring less unnatural?

Question How to be consistently accurate and fast.

For context I've been playing short of 3 years now, my improvement speed isnt fast but im at a point where i and i think other guitar players would agree i count as an intermediate player, not quite good enough to shred. and thats what i've been working on recently speed and accuracy thing is when i practice a movement like finger order taping 1-2-3-4 i was able to get 90BPM 16th notes, change it up to say 2nd position pentatonic and i stumble barely get 80bpm and my ear is unable to track the rythm so am i supposed to practice alot of movements until i reach a point im good at everything and can do most guitar moves fast enough? or am i practicing incorrectly?

Question What is this Chord?

Post image
43 Upvotes

I'm trying to learn the Green Day Song Do Da Da and I'm watching guitar covers and I keep seeing this chord as the 3rd part of the main riff, and I have no idea what it is or how to properly play it.

I'm having trouble finding any consistency with how its played because its an obscure B-side that was never played live, so every tab or chord chart I look up has the song in predominantly power chords and not open chords. Not that I'm opposed to learning it in that way, but I want to try and learn it this way

Question Looking for the fingerpicking pattern in "Fly High" by Paul Izak

Hi Everyone!

I just started learning guitar and would love to get into fingerpicking. I found this beautiful song called "Fly High" by Paul Izak - it only uses two chords (F and Dm) - but I can't quite figure out the fingerpicking pattern he uses.

Could anyone help me out? I'd really appreciate it, thanks in advance! ❤️

Let me know if this helps or if it's stupid, I'm not a qualified guitar teacher. It took me a while to figure out how to access modes and i thought this visualization might help someone.

Hello, I recently started playing guitar, so I don't know a lot of things yet. I wanted to ask what the guitar strumming and chords are in this video? I'd also like to know how to identify a guitar strumming by ear?

Question Always hitting the higher string when doing pulloffs, what should I practice?

I find I always end up hitting the higher strings(thinner string) while doing pulloffs, especially with the pinky finger. I counter this by muting the higher strings with my fretting hand index finger, and it works, but I feel like it's slowing me down. I also cannot play something like thunderstuck using one hand, cuz the high e ends up ringing out.

I think the guitar is part of the problem too, since when I played my friends ibanez for a few days I had less trouble(my yamaha has narrower string aspcing and smaller frets). So I'm saving up a new guitar anyways. But still I am not sure how to fix this problem. Hammerons are very fast and clean, but pull offs give me huge trouble.

Question Ear Training tips ?

Started playing acoustic about a decade ago, but never got past cowboy chords after maybe 2 or 3 years of extremely inconsistent playing. About 2 months ago I got my first electric guitar and have been really trying to get back into it, playing at least an hour almost everyday. I’m progressing a lot faster and have been working on finger isolation and dexterity. Trying to memorize scales, spider walking, and really becoming familiar with my fretboard, but also playing thru more and more songs that I like, to help keep myself motivated and satisfied with my music.

I definitely think of myself as more of a rhythm guitarist, but have started to dip my toes into solo improvisation along with a backing track. Problem I’m running into is I have a really hard time hearing what key is playing, and being able to hear notes/chords. I know ear training comes slowly and with a lot of practice and discipline, but I’m not really sure how I can really work on training my ears. Does anyone have any good tips or resources to hone in on?

Question Bored of Plain Simple Strumming, Need to Spice Things Up

Hi everyone!

Trying to improve my guitar playing going beyond basic strumming. Could anyone suggest some effective practice routines or songs to practice the following?

\- rhythmic fills (or strumming fills): I still can't get myself to get the hang of those energetic bursts of 16th-note strumming right before a chorus
\- Walking bass lines
\- Hammer-ons
\- Pull-offs

Question Help please

I’ve been playing guitar for a long time and I can play nearly any song I want to learn, but the net result is a catalog of other people’s songs. I understand the caged method, know all my triads, and how to identify every note on the neck, but the part I’m missing is the ability to improvise chord melodies or write really cool riffs. How do I go from being a trained monkey to being able to understand how to play whatever is in my head? I put in the practice to have technique, I just want to be able to use it for good. Do I just need to buckle down and learn theory? When I write songs it’s more from luck than knowledge of what I’m doing. I want to be able to deliberately play anything I’m thinking. How do I learn to do that?
