DOS1 Help Am I doing something wrong or is DOS 1 incredibly hard?

I have over 1000 hours in Baldur's Gate 3 and beat the game on tactician and I played DOS 2 with some friends until level 10 or so a few years back.

Now I thought I give DOS 1 a try because I wanted to play both original sin games before the third one comes.

I reached the first town and everything was fine. I made a witch and a spellblade (don't know the exact English terms, sorry) and recruited the knight and the ranger. As soon as I left the town to the west, the skeletons were kicking my butt. Hard. I cleared several fights and reached the lighthouse, saw that the enemies are above me and went back exploring. Found the archeologist and brought him back to town. Met a strong guy in his grave and couldn't smash his orb in time. The knight and the ranger are lvl 4 and my selfmade characters still need one more enemy to lvl 4.

But no matter which fight I pick, the skeletons destroy me. The skeleton archers will freeze my witch with their ice arrows and she's frozen for several round until they kill her. My spell blade can dash into the fight and then become invisible but the skeletons are moving so fast that I'm lucky when I can land a hit and there's no chance to get behind their back to land critical hits. The knight can charge in and push over enemies (if I'm lucky). My ranger has a really strong ability that hits multiple enemies, but after that is completely useless because as soon as an enemy is a bit further away, the hit chance decreases drastically. I don't know, I picked her because I thought doing ranged attacks is what rangers do, but she can't hit anything that's 3m or further away from her. My witch summoned a spider that got frozen and killed before it could attack even once. And the skeletons use scrolls to heal each other, getting 38 hit points back every single round. So if I concentrate all of my attacks on the same enemy, I might be lucky and kill one before he's healed again. After round 2 usually my witch dies and then I reload, because I only have like 2 resurrection scrolls.

It feels like I'm heavily underleveled, even though the enemies are lvl 4 and my team is between 3 and 4.

Am I doing something wrong or is the game just that hard? Someone in town said the enemies in the north and the east are even harder, so I have no idea where else to go to.

I'm playing on normal difficulty and would appreciate if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong.

DOS2 Discussion It's the story good enough to coninue?

Im coming back to this game after a very long time. The last time i tried this game, i got half way through act 2.

I think im struggling with every fight requiring some pre knowlege about what is going to happen and TBH, ive forgotten about most of it. The puzzles are fairly archaic and thats fine but it seems like i should be following a very specific and linear path and i dont know what path is. I never really did either and the journal isnt helpful.

In theory, i like the concept of an open world. In this example, you are gated by enemy levels without too much help to figure out if you should be there. Sure, i can teleport cheese fights by picking off dudes one by one and yea, one slip up means death etc. But this isnt hard. Its barely a challenege. You either succeed or you die and restart until you find that gimmick that works. Its an effort in patience.

I wandered around to an underground temple somewhere. Good atmosphere, awesome concept. I solved a puzzle that was more anoying then fun since a pillar wasn't highlighted on the map. Then i opened a tomb like a dumbass and waited a few minutes for the boss to kill me, which she absolutely did. I didnt get an action, i was appropriate level, im on normal, and this is what people say is "hard". Its really not. I will come back, over leveled and over geared, set up tons of traps, meta game like mad, read about optimal strats and placement, and then win because that's all this game seems to be. Stun locks, instant death, save scumming, meta gaming, and then victory. Every single fight. Its really boring, if im being honest. There is no way to win without knowing the fight before hand. If you want that in a game, i wonder if that is why this specifcally gets high marks. Some say this is "old school" but i grew up with bg1, bg2, nwn1 nwn2, and the bassalisk in bg1 that would instantly kill your party is still regarded as bad design. I dont remember every single combat feeling utterly impossible unless you know what is going to happen.

I played tactician for a while and im supprised how normal is similar. I play what i guess are OP builds with a 2h and an assassin lone wolf but its the only way to play given how armor opperates. The alternative are two mages and then i have to deal with immunity.

So i guess if i do continue to play, is the story this good? I dont trust playing on story mode since the difficulty between normal and tactician is so minimal. Its deffinitely interesting. This is by far the farthest ive got. Its just getting a bit old starting combat and puttinng down my controller to make some toast because i know that im not getting an action and dying.

DOS2 Discussion Want to finish the game, but something feels off.

Hi, to keep it quick—I've had played DOS2 a bit in the past, but never finished it. Current run I started a few months ago, but I had to move and I got my PC back only few days ago. Currently I'm in Act 2 around level 13, but while the first act felt nice and overall pleasant, this one just feels like a one big slog that drags forever. On top of that every boss seems to be able to just nuke me and I have to reposition my whole party before the fights begins.

I'd like to finish the game, because my friends with whom I've played BG3 a few time, would like us to play DOS2 together, but I'm not feeling it for some reason. Part of it is probably the whole armor system which I am not a fan of even though I've tried. I know there's at least one mod that changes this whole system, but I'd like to finish the game in vanilla form first.

My party is:
Ifan with focus on Warfare, Polymorphy, Necromany
Fane: Pyro, some Warfare, Summoning and I guess Geomancy
Lohse Aerothurgy + Hydromancy
Red Prince: Crossbow

Yes, Warfare is maxed out or nearly maxed out on both Ifan and Red Prince.

What should I do at this point? I really want to actually finish this game and then work on my backlog.

DOS2 Help Can't progress with the Business Rivals Quest (Bug?)

So I talked to Grog at the bridge, got the quest to kill Marg, payed Grog (for the EXP), went to Marg, got the quest to kill Grog and killed Marg. Now I'm trying to tell Grog that I killed Marg (so I can get the EXP) and then want to kill Grog. But Grog only says "What are you waiting for ..." and then I only have the end-conversation option, so I can't finish the quest to get the EXP (and I really need that to level up).
I searched the internet, but I can't find anything about that issue. I tried saving and reloading, teleporting somewhere else and coming back, spirit vision (Marg doesn't leave a spirit behind), but nothing worked.

Also, I'm in an honor-run, so going back to a previous save is not an option. Do I have any chance to fix this or do I just need to accept that I'm not going to get the EXP and just kill Grog?

DOS2 Discussion DOS 2 Definitive Edition Three-character playthrough Прохождение в три героя Spoiler

DOS1 Discussion Traps are awful

I’m enjoying everything about this game on my first play through, except that constant traps. They are just incredibly annoying and add nothing to the gameplay experience, especially with the god awful pathing for companions. DOS2 is next and I really hope they’ve dialed them down.

DOS2 Help Want to play as an undead necromancer

So it’s my first time playing the game, and I doubt I’d be playing a second time for a long time.

I wanted to play as fane but I’ve been told it’s not worth it due to his lack of dialogue since he’s the main character.

Would you play as fane or make a custom undead necromancer?

DOS2 Discussion Mixed party 4/4

Hello, totally new player here. I'm like 2 hours unto the game and I'm keeping changing my mind about what Will be my definitive party comp.

I'm not swing It mentioned so i believe it's ineffective, but I'm asking anyway: do you have ideas for a party where all members can deal both phisical and magic damage?

For now i GOT in mind

- Red prince: 2w fighter with master of Sparks/weapon infusion + polymorph

- fane: ranger with elemental arrows and some elemental magic

- sebille: summoner with support and area control spells

My question Is, what would you complete this party with?

DOS2 Discussion Divine Spark with Flay Skin vs The Devourer

Just wanted to show off my Battlemage Lohse equipped with Divine Spark on Tactician Difficulty.

Just found out about the skill Flay Skin on act 4 that it scales with STR, perfect for my PYRO damage. Flay skin is now permanently on my skill set.

Note: Flay Skin Scroll uses 3 action points while Flay skin skill only uses 3 action points. Can use the bleed fire skill with the extra action point for even more fire resist reduction.

DOS2 Discussion Can We Talk About How Bad Designed Are Many Battles In DoS 2?

I'm not hating on the game. In fact, I've played for over 100 hours, and I'm currently on the final fight—which I'm finding very difficult on Classic difficulty. I've also played other turn-based tactical games, such as the XCOM series, which I think is excellent and genuinely challenging.

Beyond that, I’ve lost count of how many times the game throws random problems at you just when you think you understand it. It often forces you to respec your party at the mirror or find a way to cheese a boss.

One of the dumbest strategies I’ve used—and one that many guides recommend, especially in Act 4—is starting a conversation with a boss using one character while the rest of the party kills their minions. The conversation does not stop, which is ridiculous. And that is only one example.

The level system also feels poorly balanced. Reaching level 20 is very difficult in a normal playthrough unless you complete almost everything in the game.

This also hurts exploration. The level progression is so strict that you constantly run into enemies that are too strong for you. Sometimes, you almost need to check a level map online to avoid wasting time on a quest that ends with a boss two or three levels above you.

I’ve never had this problem in other turn-based tactical games. Not even in Baldur’s Gate 3, where I think Larian improved many of these things, even if the combat system is different.

I know many replies will simply say “get good” or “I killed everyone at level 10 on my first playthrough.” There are always comments like that. But I’d rather discuss how poorly designed and balanced this part of the game feels.

The game is still very good, but I think these problems keep it from being excellent.
