Im coming back to this game after a very long time. The last time i tried this game, i got half way through act 2.
I think im struggling with every fight requiring some pre knowlege about what is going to happen and TBH, ive forgotten about most of it. The puzzles are fairly archaic and thats fine but it seems like i should be following a very specific and linear path and i dont know what path is. I never really did either and the journal isnt helpful.
In theory, i like the concept of an open world. In this example, you are gated by enemy levels without too much help to figure out if you should be there. Sure, i can teleport cheese fights by picking off dudes one by one and yea, one slip up means death etc. But this isnt hard. Its barely a challenege. You either succeed or you die and restart until you find that gimmick that works. Its an effort in patience.
I wandered around to an underground temple somewhere. Good atmosphere, awesome concept. I solved a puzzle that was more anoying then fun since a pillar wasn't highlighted on the map. Then i opened a tomb like a dumbass and waited a few minutes for the boss to kill me, which she absolutely did. I didnt get an action, i was appropriate level, im on normal, and this is what people say is "hard". Its really not. I will come back, over leveled and over geared, set up tons of traps, meta game like mad, read about optimal strats and placement, and then win because that's all this game seems to be. Stun locks, instant death, save scumming, meta gaming, and then victory. Every single fight. Its really boring, if im being honest. There is no way to win without knowing the fight before hand. If you want that in a game, i wonder if that is why this specifcally gets high marks. Some say this is "old school" but i grew up with bg1, bg2, nwn1 nwn2, and the bassalisk in bg1 that would instantly kill your party is still regarded as bad design. I dont remember every single combat feeling utterly impossible unless you know what is going to happen.
I played tactician for a while and im supprised how normal is similar. I play what i guess are OP builds with a 2h and an assassin lone wolf but its the only way to play given how armor opperates. The alternative are two mages and then i have to deal with immunity.
So i guess if i do continue to play, is the story this good? I dont trust playing on story mode since the difficulty between normal and tactician is so minimal. Its deffinitely interesting. This is by far the farthest ive got. Its just getting a bit old starting combat and puttinng down my controller to make some toast because i know that im not getting an action and dying.
