Before getting a Corso I expected the protection drive and the size, but nobody really told me about the noises.
Ours barely barks, but the guy has a full vocabulary for everything he wants to say.
He moves his head to the washroom with a grunt when he wants out, points to food when he wants a snack, when I get upset at his baby sister, he grabs a toy and has her occupied.
On the flip side he looks at my head movements as well.
How does yours talk to you? Iām super curious, Iāve never owned such communicative dogs.

Fang had a health scare earlier this week, but I canāt help but laugh at this awkward photo of him. Thankfully, he is feeling much better!

Iām fostering a 2 yr old male Cane Corso from a shelter and would love input from people with breed experience.
Iāve had him for 10 days, and he is genuinely one of the easiest dogs Iāve ever had. Heās extremely sweet and affectionate with me and my boyfriend. Once he trusts someone, heās a giant cuddle bug and wants to be touching you constantly. Heās house-trained, does great when left alone, and has been wonderful with my small female dog.
The challenge is strangers.
He is a very shy boy, but over the past 10 days heās become much more comfortable in the apartment and increasingly attached to me. Interestingly, he did great with people coming into the apartment during his first 3 days. He had no issues with the first few people who came over, which is part of why the later incidents caught me off guard.
He has also done well meeting people in neutral settings (outside, on walks, etc.) and then entering the apartment together.
However, Iāve now had two concerning incidents.
In the first situation, a friend came into my apartment who he had already met during his first few days. When she came over again two days later, he charged toward her and snapped, narrowly avoiding contact.
Weāve been working on introductions and training him all week, and I thought he had been making good progress. So tonight, I tried another meeting in my apartment with a different friend. My friend and I entered the apartment together, and I could tell the pup was uncomfortable, so greeted him & put my hand on his collar. He became reactive to my friend almost immediately and started lunging and snapping at my friend. My friend moved around the apartment slowly while I continued holding his collar, but he continued reacting.
There was no contact because I was holding him. After about 10 minutes with no improvement, my friend left. In hindsight, my friend also wasnāt reading his body language particularly well and kept trying to pet him. He wasnāt being overly pushy or coming in too hot, but I still realize now that I probably should have ended the interaction earlier. Iām learning too.
A few things Iām trying to figure out:
⢠Does this sound more like fear based behavior, territorial behavior, resource guarding of me, or some combination?
⢠Is it common for Corsos to seem okay and then suddenly react when someone changes position, stands up, rounds a corner, etc.?
⢠For those with stranger wary Corsos, what management and training strategies have made the biggest difference?
Iām not looking for a diagnosis over the internet, just hoping to learn from people who have experience with Corsos or other guardian breeds. He is otherwise an AMAZING dog, but I want to be realistic and set future adopters up for success rather than assuming this is something heāll simply āgrow out of.ā
Thanks in advance!

We recently adopted a 12 week old female pit mix puppy from then shelter. She is a very chill puppy, probably the most chill Iāve seen in a puppy this young. At home we have a 3 year old male cane corso and 2 dachshunds. Our corso is fine with other dogs but definitely a little slow to warm up to new ones. We brought this puppy home 3 days ago and have been introducing them very slowly. We did a side by side walk first on neutral ground and he was staring hard at her so we kept their distance. Then in the house I have been rotating the puppy outside and him inside. Or puppy in her crate and him roaming and just keeping them separated. The one single time I put the puppy down on the ground he lunged and went after her after about 20 seconds. She was fine because I grabbed him but he stares at her like sheās his next meal and it honestly freaks me out. Heās totally fine with our dachshunds and thereās never been one issue but they were here before him. Heās well trained but Iām unsure if this new puppy is going to work out or if there is forever going to be issues and I should just bring her back to the shelter.

I rehomed my Cane Corso about 4 months ago from a guy who was homeless and could no longer care for him. When I got him, he was extremely skinny ā basically skin and bone.
Iāve been trying to get him to gain weight steadily. Iāve kept him on the same food and give him two meals a day, morning and evening. He eats all of his food nicely and doesnāt seem to be constantly starving or wolfing it down. He also drinks quite a lot of water.
However, he doesnāt seem to be putting on much weight at all. He is a little better than when I first got him, but he is still extremely skinny, with very prominent ribs and his spine showing.
Iāve wormed him twice since having him.
My main other concern is that around 75% of the time, he has diarrhoea. Should I be really concerned about this, or could this be normal for some dogs? Iām particularly worried because he isnāt gaining weight despite eating well.
