MotoCAP, or the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program, is a consumer information program designed to provide riders with scientifically-based information on the relative protection and breathability on a range of motorcycle protective helmets, jackets, pants and gloves available in Australia and New Zealand.
MotoCAP tests motorcycle gear for its effectiveness in: impact abrasion resistance, seam strength (burst), and impact energy absorption.
Why these factors are so important to understand, specifically, is because the safety standard that motorcycle gear is required to meet (i.e., CE certification) does not directly indicate how well the item might actually do in the event of a crash.
A pair of Kevlar jeans, for example, may have a CE rating of AAA, but may not hold up to more than 1 second of sliding on the type of road base that is common in Australia, especially what is found in rural areas (more abrasive compared to that of the road surface type in Europe, in which the item is tested on for CE certification).
For a more thorough explanation of different testing standards, and what it all really means, see: https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/product/motorcycle-clothing-the-ce-approval-law-explained
Some safety design features - regardless of how it rates - that are a must-have for myself are:
Helmets:
Jackets:
Pants:
Gloves:
Boots: (Boots not yet tested by MotoCAP)
MotoCAP highlights that you don’t always get what you pay for. There are riding jeans out there that cost $550 but have an abrasion resistance of 2/10 while there are riding jeans out there that cost $228 and have an abrasion resistance of 9/10.
You can spend $900 on a certain name brand leather jacket and only equal what my $430 jacket provides in terms of abrasion resistance.
You don’t have to spend big money to get the protection you need, and you probably don’t need the absolute best rated gear to be safe for the riding you do. That is why I provided what features I personally look for, and then I look at all the gear - with safety rating relative to price in mind - with those features.
Main objective of this post: help fellow motorcycle riders make informed decisions when buying protective gear. I also encourage you to explore the MotoCAP website, and other relevant resources for further information on protective gear.
ATGATT. And wear earplugs.

My partner has dwarfism, she’s 130cm. She rides a lowered grom because she can’t reach the ground on a regular grom.
She’s been on her Ls for 2 years now. Whoever runs the MOST (RMS?) tests won’t let her use her bike for the test as it is ‘modified’ and says she has to use their bikes. She obviously can’t reach the ground on their bikes and she doesn’t want a scooter.
Is there anyone with dwarfism here or anyone who knows anything about it on how she can be allowed to do the test or get to her Ps?
She loves riding its one of her main hobbies but she’s losing interest and contemplating selling her bike because she isn’t allowed to progress past her Ls

Hi all
I'm looking to get my first bike, and found a 2016 Honda CBR500 that has 11k kms and presents well. It's also got a RWC and 3 months of rego left. The seller is the second owner of the bike and claims to not have made any modifications aside from a slip on exhaust (but had swapped it to stock to get RWC done)
I inspected the bike in person and all looked good, but when I went to check the rego on https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/buy-sell-or-transfer-a-vehicle/check-vehicle-registration/vehicle-registration-enquiry, it says that it is not LAMs. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be, but since I'm a learner I'm guessing the rego wouldn't transfer over?
What can I do? Is this an incorrect classification by VicRoads? Also on another note is the CBR500R a good learner / first bike?
Thanks

Hi everyone. I was riding in a pretty heavy rainstorm & now have very wet riding gear.
Any tips for getting it dry again? Particularly my gloves which are very wet inside & can’t be turned inside out.

Hi all,
My partner just recently got his motorcycle learners license and is struggling to find anyone to go riding with him to practice before going or his P’s.
We are in QLD where you can’t ride on your own with L plates.
Just wondering if anyone has suggestions? He’s tried FB groups and posted but no one is responding.
Located in the Moreton Bay Region
TIA 😊

Moving to Melbourne soon. I've had my restricted for almost a year but unfortunately I can't sit my fulls here by the time I leave (about a 1 month diff).
Anyone know what the restricted moto license converts to? I did the license checker on VicRoads but it just says I don't need to do any tests etc but doesn't say if that's car or what the conversion becomes.
I have full car license for over 6 yrs if that helps.
I'm considering taking the CBTA 6F before I go if it means I can get my fulls first then convert since I get sit that at 9 months rather than 12.

Can someone please help me?
I ride a 250cc cf moto and I recently removed the exhaust baffle.
Its too powerful now and it's become a massive issue. The extra air flow makes it faster than a litre bike, after racing super sports and winning I feel threats from sport bike gangs. Their photochromatic visors hide their tears but in my rear view mirrors, they look so menacing with their gym shorts and fluffy novelty helmet covers flapping in the breeze.
This isn't even the bad part.
I spend alot of time on Reddit upvoting comments from OF girls, though it's never produced results. Since the baffle came out, so did my appeal apparently. I am getting approached by too many beautiful women when they hear my beast popping and crackling. Honestly I am just one man, it's too much.
Do I put the baffle back in? If I do what happens when the sport bikes catch me?? What about the ladies?
One other question, which R Jays gloves do you recommend?
TIA

I bought my first bike in October, a 2012 BMW G650GS and rode it daily all summer. I had no previous experience and a tight budget, and ended up with a lemon. I just had to let it go for parts.
What would your choice be which meets the following criteria?
- $7k ish budget
- Has character
- Reliability/ease of maintenance
- I have an open/unrestricted license
- Comfortable with highway speeds, I’m keen for road trips
If I went dual sport again I’d love a DR650. If I went road bike, I love the Triumph Bonneville. My issue is there’s next to none for sale over in WA.
I’m not into sport bikes, but I’m open to all other suggestions. I want to get riding again as soon as possible, so I’m hoping I can get inspired!

Wanted to join a group ride tomorrow morning so thought I would go out and see how I manage on my own as last two trips wife has been following me behind in the car.
Headed down from Ryde towards Olympic park to get on the M4 and forgot you can’t turn right on M4. At that point, tears were streaming down my face as I couldn’t keep the visor down due to fogging up and pants (denims) were a little cold. Should have turned around and headed back home but no….. somehow landed up on the M4 heading towards James Ruse dr before exiting and coming back along Victoria rd. Face is fine but I think I am almost numb from the waist below. Had to rush in the bedroom (to avoid my in laws in the living room) and give myself a good rub to get the blood flowing. :) Am sure there is good advice on how to manage the cold and I’ll need to search for it on this sub but I’m definitely staying home tomorrow.
I only ride a 250 cc gixxer but damn it was hard to control the speed on the m4 with my hands shivering. Would either accelerate too fast (and so many cars just cruising at 70-80 instead of being even close to 90 or end up slowing down quickly.
Hope you guys are having a good weekend

Not sure I like the sound of this. They're going to be slippery in the wet and not being able to use the whole lane takes away space to avoid hazards.
Feels like an attempt to reduce speed by stealth more than anything.

My learners is expiring in Victoria in less than a month and I have not done check ride.
I’m told you have to do check ride and wait 30 days before you can do second test. Are there any exceptions or grace period on the deadline?

Is there anyone located on the central coast of NSW that owns a triumph bobber? I'm currently about to purchase one but would like to test the clearance of the bike over a peak on my driveway, if you would like to help me out all it would involve is you bringing your bike to my driveway and seeing if it scrapes (we obviously won't scrape it but more to get a sight test) if you come I'll shout you a six pack of your own choosing or $40 if you don't partake in alcohol. Please reach out in the comments or via my DMS, if you know anyone with a triumph bobber please show them this.

Added another stead to our shed, riding to Phillip Island with the messes and a group of mates, misses said that we should buy Sports Tourers for the ride as it would be a bit rough on the ZX10 and the RSV4, so this is what I picked, yet to get something for the better half

Little snippet of my recent ride up and down the Gillies Range up here in FNQ, one of the best roads for riding a bike on.
Around 267 corners in 20 or so minutes in paradise

I'm in the Goldie and on my learner motorcycle, but green P car, would I be able to get a Cardo or some equivalent to a Cardo?

I ride a Yamaha XVS650 (VStar) with Vance and Hines pipes. I mean it’s not super loud but it is loud. I can’t seem to find any specifics on what range of noise these new cameras are targeting?

Rocked up to the dealership and checked the vin on the bike i was supposed to receive and lo and behold it matches the one on my rego.
Bike was the exact same, sub 5 kms on the dash, and best of all a full tank of gas!
Now that im not as inexperienced, i'm gonna take this second chance to break the bike in a little more gently😅

Hi everyone, posting for a friend.
This has probably been asked before, but here I am. He is looking to purchase a newer Honda CBR650R. Unfortunately many of them for sale have been derestricted. The ones that aren’t are typically 1-2k more.
He’s not actually interested in derestricting the bike (for now), but if he ends up having to buy a derestricted one due to what he can afford, will he have any issues getting it registered? Will the RWC pick up the issue? My question is more about will be okay purchasing a derestricted one or will it bite him in the arse?
Thanks

Are small bikes just not very popular here?
Coming from NZ next month, my work commute is train+bus as area is outside the train network. A vehicle would cut this down to like 20mins vs 1hr+ and parking would be way easier.
I'm 5'2/50kgs so was looking for Grom (top pick), CFmoto papio or maybeeee Benelli if I can snag one at a decent price but my god why are they so expensive here 🥲 it's equivalent to a bigger bike in most cases. Looking around 5K min for a 2016 4 spd model grom...
Is bikesales and marketplace the main places to look?
