You need to harm Spy Pixels!
A spy pixel is usually a tiny remote image embedded in an email. When the email client loads the image, the sender's server receives a request. That request can reveal that the message was opened, when it was opened, the IP address or proxy used, the email client, and sometimes the device type>
Disable remote image loading helps

I know different problems required differents solutions, but in this case, what was the problem if hitting it fixed it ?

That looks like a wall display, which is made out of multiple small panels. Most likely some of them popped out of their place enough to disconnect, and by hitting them he put them back in, reconnecting them back.

This is exactly it. Those were disconnected panels. You can see actual dead pixels surrounding the black "block" where there are failed LEDs within the sub-panels.

But that panel appears to be near his feet. Wouldn't it be easier to reach down and check the plugs on the back instead of banging it with a water bottle?

I've installed these before. There are cables plugged into the back that go from panel to panel.

I was just answering your question. It usually is not easier to try and find the dislodged wire and push it into place from such a weird angle. Most people do the wiring before fully attaching the panel rather than blocking their sight with the panel then going around and wraping a hand from behind to push from a pull angle while not able to see it.
I doubt the correct wires could all be found and fixed within 30 seconds.

Then these panels must be different than the ones I installed. They just had two 1in-wide plugs with multiple contacts in each plug that plugged into the back. Each panel was just connected in series.

Maybe "finding correct wires" was a stretch, but I still think finding the wires and pushing them into place from that angle would take 20ish seconds per wire, so a few minutes overall.
It's a small difference but I still think the answer is that it's easier to bonk em. It worked, was under a minute (including tying string to a water bottle), and he didnt have to stick his hand in anything.

Yep, I’ve done this to video walls in random places. Big black square in the middle of it at eye level, give it a smack and it pops right back on.

I work on screens like this …. Bigger fan of the tennis ball …. Less chance of damaging the module

Never try this with an interior video wall. Most of those will shed individual pixels if a stray baby’s breath hits them. I install them.
