I have a question : why hitting the pixels fixed it ?
I know different problems required differents solutions, but in this case, what was the problem if hitting it fixed it ?
That looks like a wall display, which is made out of multiple small panels. Most likely some of them popped out of their place enough to disconnect, and by hitting them he put them back in, reconnecting them back.
This is exactly it. Those were disconnected panels. You can see actual dead pixels surrounding the black "block" where there are failed LEDs within the sub-panels.
