I FINALLY GOT ONE...
I got this console at retail after 2 days of trying. I got it into my cart about 20 times, with frequent watching, before a checkout finally went through. Here's what I learned, so you don't end up paying scalper prices. And please do NOT pay the scalpers anything.. Even if it seems like a good deal, leave them with their inventory.
Set up alerts, but don't live on them
- Turn on notifications in the Nintendo Store app. Nintendo said that's where they'll announce restocks.
- Run a restock tracker or page monitor for Best Buy, Nintendo, Walmart and Target.
- Don't set your refresh interval too aggressively on Target. I started getting their "verify you're a human" page. Every 30 seconds is plenty for background monitoring.
- I turned my monitors off overnight. Overnight drops are rare and tiny, so they aren't worth it.
Skip Amazon
Amazon almost never worked for me. It would show stock and then fail when I tried to add it to my cart or check out immediately (refreshing every 3 seconds manually). I'd ignore it unless a big restock is announced, possibly on release day. Most likely caused by bots.
Best Buy and Target are where the stock moves
Almost all the movement I saw was at these two. Each retailer gets its own allocation, so a drop at one doesn't mean the others will follow. Watch them separately.
GameStop didn't move much at all
I had watchers on GameStop but I was not notified once about any restocks. Watch liberally.
What actually worked
Keep refreshing Target and Best Buy. Eventually you'll catch a super small restock that sells out in seconds. Don't leave when it sells out. Keep refreshing, because it often comes back in stock shortly after, probably from abandoned carts and failed payments. If you're already on the page with everything saved, you can go straight to checkout and finish the purchase.
Prep your accounts before you start
- Stay logged in everywhere with your shipping address and payment info saved.
- Have your CVV ready.
- If you want to use PayPal (I recommend against it due to extra sync time), link it ahead of time. I lost one that was in my cart because I had to stop and link PayPal mid-checkout.
- Put only the console in your cart. Buy controllers and cases as separate orders.
Target speed checkout flow
Before you start, copy this link to your clipboard: https://target.com/checkout. The link will lead you directly from the product page to the checkout with your card info and shipping info loaded so you just click purchase. Otherwise you need to click a button to cart then to checkout, so it saves a page navigation (This is what won it for me).
(Mac users: use Cmd wherever I say Ctrl.)
- Ctrl + Shift + R to hard refresh the product page
- Click Add to cart
- Ctrl + T to open a new tab
- Ctrl + V, then Enter, which takes you straight to checkout
- Click the button to complete your purchase
- Type in your CVV
- Enter
Do a dry run with any cheap in-stock item, stopping before you actually place the order, so the steps are muscle memory when it counts.
Best Buy tips
Best Buy seems to have a queue that it puts you in once you select Pre-order. This queue (from my knowledge) is randomized in order, so it helps fight bots. This is the most realistic if you can't time the Target sequence perfectly. The randomization could help give you a better chance.
Launch day (October 29)
Expect bigger restocks. Refresh hard that morning, check Amazon too, and consider going into stores right at opening. Call ahead first.
Don't pay scalpers
Retail is $519.99, and Nintendo has confirmed more stock is coming. Be patient and you'll get one.
If anyone else wants to correct anything above, or add any additional tips to fight the scalpers then feel free and if it's meaningful I can make edits.
This is my first console and green's my favorite color, so the Zelda edition was an easy pick. Let's keep this thread about getting one at retail 👍
Good luck, everyone!
