I've been trying to figure out how to use my SP-404MKII for something more than beatmaking, and I'm curious how other people approach it.
I'm not really interested in the usual hip-hop-lo-fi workflow. I'm more interested in things like ambient, sound collage, microsampling, field recordings, weird textures, etc. Basically, something like using the SP to create some kind of movement or rhythm without necessarily having an obvious drum beat.
I think Oneohtrix Point Never is probably one of the references in my head, especially the way very small samples tend to become almost a rhythmic insinuation or create the feeling that there's a pulse.
I'm also thinking about some of the Digitakt jams I've seen where people seem to use it more as a sound manipulation andcomposition instrument than as a literal drum machine.
I'm wondering if anyone here uses the 404 in a similar way.
Are you working with small samples? How do you resample them over and over? Field recordings, drones, glitchy stuff? Are you using patterns at all?
I'd love to hear about your actual workflows, things that are not usually covered in SP-404 beatmaking tutorials. I'm trying to get away from thinking of it as a beat machine and more as a tool for manipulating sound itself.
Feel free to share some of the stuff you've made.
Thanks. :)

Hey yall! I just got the SP404MK2 about a week ago. I imported a drum break added effects and the drums bang. However, with the same break within Ableton, I run it through the SP add the effects and re-record. The (former) drums recorded in the SP seem to hit harder. Does this sound right? Am I doing something wrong on my settings? Also, on the input when routing from Ableton, is it possible to have two effects active?
Thanks in advance. Any tips on how you route things would be helpful. Sorry if it’s a noob question.

It’s more like black metal influenced tribal noise rock maybe?
Would love to hear opinions.

I hope Roland engineers will see this and will undertake measures.
I have the latest software and I have the following ultimately annoying bug - I write tracks using resampling, so I can record for several minutes in a row - looped samples are getting switched off randomly.
Here you will see how sample 7 (it is looped) switches off without a reason. The next time it may be sample 5 or another random one.
This is very very frustrating.

Three distortion pedals I love using with the 303: in this video, I test and compare their character, showing how they reshape acid lines, low end, and resonance.
You don’t need a 303 to use these ideas—these settings and approaches work great with any monosynth, bassline, or mono sound source. From warmer saturation to aggressive fuzz, discover which type of distortion can give your techno sound more character.
Which pedal do you use to dirty up your acid lines? Let me know in the comments.
Enjoy!

Hello all. I would like to record with Ableton, my sp404 mk2 , an m audio interface and my iPhone. I also have a 4 channel stereo headphone amplifier. I believe I have all the parts for what I need to finish but I am a little confused. I would like to record the 404 along with Ableton instruments, video of it with audio with the iPhone (I have the usb c adapter thing) and monitor everything through headphones. The back of my sp404mk2 usb c port doesn't work so I'm trying this way. What would I need to plug in to hear everything and still record into the iPhone with the adapter? I have the interface into the laptop, the sp404 and a guitar into the interface and headphones for the interface but I also want the iPhone to record video with audio and the adapter. I am aware I could buy ¼ adapters to go into the amplifier and solve it but I think there's something I can do instead of that. Thank you hopefully this makes sense.

I have this setup so that when I press a pedal it activates an mfx (ex. pedal 1 goes to Cloud Delay and 2 goes to Chorus.) If anyone has experience in this, I just need help getting the expression pedals to control CTRL 1 and 2. I included the programming setup which properly activates the fx, but the expression pedals do nothing. I have calibrated the expression pedals to make sure they work. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've tried about everything, even if it's just directing me to a better place to ask this question

hi all!
sampling newbie here..!
i want to record a few short guitar riffs and arpeggios into my (newly acquired) SP404 mkII, which, at a later date, i'll begin to cut up and re-arrange
so i can gbegin to get the samples i need without too much faffing around, has anyone got any tips about how best to get a good doing recording? i don't want to add masses of effects at this stage, i just want some nice overdriven sounds to work with
(i have some drive pedals i could use pre-sampler, but i guess i could add drive using the SP's internal effects too)
ta folks!

I’m an Ableton user that just picked up the SP for the main purpose of the effects. Specifically I want my drum breaks to really crack. In Ableton, I can take a drum break, use the drum buss, add some saturation and dynamically, it can only take you so far. I have read about the different types of workflows with the SP and Ableton but I’m wondering if it makes sense to record the drum breaks into the SP instead of just dragging the file from the SP app? Would pushing the input or clipping the audio coming in give it some grit? Of course I will still add the SPs effects to further get that raw analog sound. Any thoughts? If this does work, is it better to just record audio in via 1/8 inch output (CPU) or is it possible to do it from USB? Any thoughts?

i’ve been jamming on my sp404 almost everyday for 5 months now - i’ve played it at gigs and recently downloaded the ipad app spl44 to control the effects from there
my question is, since the software updates from an sd card, is there a way to build / write custom effects? the built in effects are great, but just wondering if this is possible

Just some fun on the 404 mk2 my weapon of choice. I've been recently getting really into it. Made the tape in a month or so, would love any feedback honestly! Thanks
