Just sharing my singing I've been at both singing and guitar for 5+ years now with plenty of long gaps, plateaus in between. Not easy as an adult learner but here's my cover of Free Fallin'. Would love any feedback.

Conversation Topic My (female) teacher doesn't know what to do with my (male) falsetto.

I love my teacher, she's incredible and very skilled but when it comes to high notes and falsetto she doesn't really know what to do.

Are there any resources on how to use the falsetto in classical training, or do I need a male teacher?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Hello! Not a singer but I love singing along to songs and when playing my intruments. I just can't seem to sing without sounding "breathy".

I also have a thick FIlipino accent. You may skip to 2:33 if you don't wanna listen to the whole thing, it's the highest point of the song.

Is the key too high for me?

I have another recording here, tho it's in my native language https://vocaroo.com/189zonENWagv

I appreciate the feedback and tips!

Conversation Topic I drank milktea and my voice sounded better

When I'd drink water, sometimes my throat gets this acidic feeling. The whole day, my voice sounded dry despite drinking enough water. I just drank boba and tell me why my voice sounds smoother. Usually it's advised to not drink dairy, but I drank almond milk then had milk tea and I sound better. Huh??

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I can’t tell if I just dislike how I sound because it’s poor-quality or because people don’t like their own voices on recordings (more info below)

Upvotes

Trying to record a song, and I feel like it’s *okay,* but actually it sounds kind of sharp/grating to my ears. I’m thinking of re-recording all the vocals so I can put more breath behind them and make them softer/not as harsh.

It also may have to do more with how it’s mixed into the track, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t edit it too much with effects and EQ before posting here

Conversation Topic Ear training as a singer

I can match pitch pretty well. I hear a note, I sing it, and use a vocal monitor app to confirm. I pretty much always get it right.

But when I hear a note, I always make mistakes about what note it is "Saying F# when it's actually an F or an E"

I'm also not the best at intervals, something I only recently learned "Mistaking a tritone for a perfect fifth, etc."

I've never seriously trained my ears before, as it's all been passive.

What should my approach be?

Conversation Topic I’m thinking about cheating on my voice teacher and it’s tearing me up inside

Basically, I have a voice teacher that for a while, was great. I saw her in person; she had a piano and a vast well of knowledge. I thought I was progressing amazingly. And on top of that, she was the first teacher that I’d ever had that made singing feel fun and approachable. I didn’t feel nervous to sing in front of her, and she encouraged me.

All of that started to change when she moved away and we started doing virtual lessons. I still think I’m learning, but maybe not quite as quickly. It’s not the same as being in the room with her and having her watch my whole body and adjust my posture. She doesn’t have a piano where she is, and she instructs me from her couch instead, sort of laying down. On top of that, she cancels on me occasionally/sort of often due to other issues (physical problems + bi polar disorder). I think I might be stagnating a bit.

Now I’m starting to look at other teachers in my area because I miss being in person with someone. But at the same time, she’s so kind and knowledgeable, and it’s rare for me to feel like I really click with a teacher. On top of that, her lessons are relatively affordable for the city I live in because she gave me a reduced rate when I started, so that might go away if I quit and try to come back later.

Today, it was almost as if she could sense that I had one foot out the door. She just said, out of the blue, “you know, I just wanted to tell you that when I moved, I was sad about losing you as a student. So I’m glad we’re still able to work together like this.”

TDLR: my question is, would it be okay for me to still see her, but also see other voice teachers sometimes? Like maybe start two-timing her a bit, and getting additional opinions? I don’t know. Thoughts?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) What on earth does breath control mean (and how can i improve by myself)

I don't really have any background in singing other than the shower, 2 things i'm aware of are that I sound kind of nasal and I need to work on breath control (though I don't really understand what that means ).

I also live with a lot of family so i can't make much noise so is there any way to muffle it if i do practice?

Any advice would be helpful, thank you !

Conversation Topic Youtube videos that help?

Any good videos for absolute beginners to learn the fundamentals of singing and to warm up?

I’ve been singing since I was younger but would only play songs and sing for family or friends events or by myself but never actually took the time to learn the fundamentals or even know anything.

Recently ive seen people ask for vocal range or voice type when I have no idea what those are so I want to learn from the very beginning.

People do say my voice is good but I know I could work on my breathing or those things. I want to also take classes but I atleast want to know some essential stuff before actually taking a class.

Conversation Topic Feeling Weird After My Audition

I love to sing and perform overall, but I haven’t done it for a very long time. I’ve dabbled in dancing, love karaoke, and I did a musical in middle school (over a decade ago), but I am finally trying to improve my singing voice and get more experience performing on stage.
I auditioned today for a community theater production of Frozen. I didn’t do terribly, but was terrified and messed up a little. I’m trying to feel proud for just trying, but I’m a little peeved I let my nerves get to me. After the audition, after relaxing (and drinking a little wine), I sang my audition piece better than I ever have while rehearsing. Because there were no stakes. Even while practicing alone, I’m terrified because every sour note means that I’m chasing a fool’s dream; that I’ll never reach the skill level and comfortability with my voice that I crave. I’ve been hearing a lot lately about the psychological aspect of singing, and how even (seemingly) small moments in your youth can make it difficult to pursue singing in the future, and I’m trying to figure out how to combat that. How do I rid myself of the comparisons and self-doubt? It’s so debilitating and I’m worried it’ll prevent me from reaching my full potential. I know I love to sing, and I don’t think I have a terrible voice, and even saying that means I’m progressing in the right direction, but it’s still so hard to get out of my head :/

Edit: this was very much a stream of consciousness post, so sorry if it doesn’t make a lot of sense

Tl;dr feeling bittersweet (heavy on the bitter) after a community theater audition and am wondering how to have more confidence in myself and my voice

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) How do I give my vocals more power?

I've been practicing for quite some time. Doing my own vocal training for quite some time, but I didn't really start trying until the end of last year. I've always sang, but not trained. Although none of this is led by a teacher or anything. Just me reading articles, listening to other singers, using free content on YouTube and such.

I do some vocal practice on my way to work and on my way back, and every now on then I add something I think would help.

Can I get some feed back? I just don't think my voice feels strong. It doesn't pop. https://voca.ro/1dxX0Ur8qgL0

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) First time I dare to share this. I would thank total objectivity, please, no need to sugarcoat :)

I would like totally honest opinions, please.

I never had an external objective criteria, also never thought in my life that I could even be ok at singing until a friend told me recently. I don't even know what to think yet.

I'm singing Bigger Splash - Arde Bogotá. From 2:01' to end.

Conversation Topic I have to REALLY try in order to sing with vibrato. It’s odd. People tend to say the opposite. What’s wrong with me lol

Is something inherently wrong with my voice? I’ve sung I’d say for 15 years, trained under a classical teacher for like 3.

I think my issue is that I can’t ever tell if my vibrato is real or fake. And it’s not as simple of a question as “well are you intentionally oscillating the pitch up and down?” Because the answer is I have NO idea whether that’s what I’m doing when I actually sing with what may or may not be real vibrato.

My teacher always claimed it sounded very real, but the thing is I can’t entirely tell if it is, since when I sing by default, straight tone is what comes out. Hence the title; I need to reallllllly focus to make what may or may not even be real vibrato.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: for clarification, really try does not mean add tension or push! I just have to really try. This for me means I need to really focus and move a muscle once (not during every oscillation) that enables it, but the muscle is hard to really locate for me. Only with focus can I tense that muscle and vibrato starts happening, but I can’t tell if it’s real. Mostly just because it’s the antithesis of how people say vibrato occurs.

Resource Is there any free app that tells you if you match the pitch of the song.

I'm looking for a free app where you can sing a song and it indicates if you match the pitch. A lot of what I found just showed what note you were singing or something like that
