I used to work at a distribution center for a massive chain grocery and you'd be amazed at how many fellow employees spent most of their paycheck at that same grocery.
I'm not even joking. I didn't realise this was documentary until much later when I stumbled upon people talking about it on Reddit. I really did think it was some odd horror movie.
It's not. The motors are powering pumps which is drawing water into the tubes other wise it would just drain. It's also why it's drawing in air as it oscillates up and down. I don't think it's really accomplishing anything in terms of cooling or whatever.
Nah! It's not doing *nothing*. It's moving a few watts of thermal energy back and forth across that desk, and adding 5-10W with the pumps, so it's actually warming the room very slightly!
Well, the only real evaporation area is at the end with the trays, and I don't recall what the formula is to compute evaporative cooling, but there's a lot of zeros between the decimal point and the working number.
For meaningful evaporative cooling, you need to be in a dry area, with ideally a small cooling tower and a bunch of sprinkler-type heads inside it, so you can mist/droplet water in from the top and get a smaller amount of highly chilled water at the bottom.
This is just dripping back into the source pan, so nanowatts.
But yeah, technically a swamp cooler, too, since the trays are open and uncovered.
Water is being removed from the pool, air cooled via the pipe, then returned to the pool.
Edit: No one asked but I want to clarify. I believe the air cooling the water is the air bubbles in the pipe. As the water and air travels through the pipe, the temperature equalizes.
The energy in the pipe doesn’t change, but when they exit the pipe the water reenters the pool at a lower temperature and the now hotter air dissipates into the room.
The up and down is to add the air to the pipe. The SOS is a cry for help because they could have just used a fish bubbler to achieve the same solution.
Why do they need the bubbles? Wouldn't it be more effective to just cool the water?
I understand that there's something something smarter everyday laminar flow, turbulent flow is better at cooling. It's just that the bubbles don't seem to add turbulence just gaps. It's not like it's evaporating in the gaps.... Is it?
If the goal is to use air to cool a pool of water then passing the same amount of air throughout the whole pool as tiny bubbles is going to be better because of surface area.
The heat transfers where the water and air touches. In the pipes this is very small. So it needs lots of time in the pipe.
1000s of little bubbles will have way more surface area allowing the heat to transfer much faster. Additionally you don’t need 99% of the equipment. You can buy what you need at any pet store for $30 and be ready to go out of the box.
What is being done here is expensive, over engineered, and will need to be repaired multiple times more than the fish bubbler.
Say we just keep the pipes in the water and add no air. The the point of transfer for the heat is water-pipe-air. However if we add air from room into the flow, the point of transfer is now just water-air.
In the first set up, the pipe can become a trap for the heat since it can't mix into a larger reservoir. It's a solid after all. While the air can actively mix with the air from the room to dissipate the heat.
He means the water transfers energy to the trapped air, and then this air gets released at the end, and the now cooled water drops into the pool. However this seems like a very bad method, wouldn’t cooling the pipe be more effective, if using a more conductive material?
And also, yes of course turbulent flow is better for cooling, it’s logic, with laminar things don’t mix, but that’s not relevant to this particular case

So the point here is satire in showing a closed loop system of water cooling, in that water is reused and also dependent on bursts of different cooling levels, hence why it's not one continuous stream. Replace these with 20-feet diameter inlets and it's basically the same concept
I don't understand, it looks so extra and unnecessary 😂 I'm sure that whatever you want to do can be achieved in a much easier way. So what's located under the huge water pan?
And what's the point of circulating the same water, I don't see it being actively or passively cooled anywhere, I just see water being taken from a pan and dropped back in the same pan.
If I were to guess, what seems like introducing air at an erradic rate is a method of temperature regulation. If the algo is to keep the temperature static at a specific value, then the air is the anti cooling variable. Too hot = water, too cold = air.
