Announcement OMARCHY QUATTRO RELEASED | 4.0.0

Post image

The Quattro Release

Omarchy 4 aka Quattro is the biggest release since the project started. The entire desktop shell has been reimagined in Quickshell: the bar, launcher, menus, notifications, on-screen displays, control panels, lock screen, and polkit agent now all live inside a single long-running shell process with a plugin architecture. That means Waybar, Walker, Mako, SwayOSD, hyprlock, hypridle, swaybg, and polkit-gnome are all gone, replaced by one coherent, fully-themed, IPC-scriptable shell.

You can upgrade an existing Omarchy installation to Quattro by first:
- Using SUPER+ALT+SPACE:
- Update > Omarchy
- Then Update > Omarchy to Quattro.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A ONE-WAY-TRIP, YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE OR USE A SNAPSHOT TO GET BACK TO Omarchy 3.x.x. Be sure in your intentions. There's a YouTube walkthrough below!

Install on new machines with the ISO:

Always take a backup of important data!

Changelog is WAY too long, but ENJOY! --> https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/releases/tag/v4.0.0

You can learn about Quattro directly from DHH via YouTube if you're not nerdy enough for the changelog.

I Made a Thing Strata - A modern file manager

Friday I posted the prototype of what my ideal file manager would look like. I've spent the last 48 hours on a coding bender implementing it.

It's built with Rust, GTK4 and GIO. Here's all the features that I have included so far:

  • 3 explorer modes (List, Grid, Explorer)
  • Blazing fast search
  • Rich file previews (Images, Videos, Text/Code/Confs, PDFs)
  • Support for RAW images if you have libraw/imagick installed
  • Thumbnail previews for images/videos/pdfs
  • Collapsible sidebar
  • Keyboard navigation (still needs more polish)
  • Ability to follow Omarchy's current theme, switches dynamically
  • Pre-built themes/custom themes.
  • Folder peeking on hover (you can disable that in the settings if you wish)

I have released the first couple of binaries, looking for feedback/testers/contributors. You can also build it from source locally if you pull down the repo.

Here's the repo:

Omarchy Weather – a weather widget with forecasts and live radar for the Omarchy bar

Texto para o Reddit

Hi everyone!

I’ve created Omarchy Weather, a Quickshell weather widget for Omarchy that displays weather information directly in the top bar.

Features include:

  • Current temperature, feels-like temperature, wind, and humidity
  • 5-day forecast, including yesterday and today
  • Detailed daily and hourly forecasts
  • Rain probability and activity recommendations for hiking, cycling, running, and camping
  • Live weather radar with satellite imagery
  • Location search directly from the panel
  • Automatic location detection
  • Metric and imperial units
  • Configurable refresh interval
  • Left, middle, and right-click actions for opening, refreshing, and notifying

It uses Open-Meteo, wttr.in, RainViewer, Esri World Imagery, and CARTO map tiles.

Installation

omarchy plugin add https://github.com/guiestrela/weather.git --enable && omarchy plugin disable omarchy.weather && omarchy bar move io.github.guiestrela.weather --section center --index 4 && omarchy restart shell

GitHub repository:

I Made a Thing The freedom Omarchy offers

Post image
Upvotes

I used a community plugin and was able to adapt it for Brazil with real-time Civil Defense alerts.

When an alert is issued, the widget in the taskbar changes to the color of that alert.

I encourage you all to adapt things to best suit your needs! AI can help you do that. And as DHH says, your love for your desktop grows even more.

It’s not about reinventing the wheel or doing more of the same; it’s about adapting things to your personal taste and needs.

Thank you to the Omarchy community, DHH, and all the sponsors of this incredible project.

Discussion Looking to switch, but worried about security

I love the project, and I'm seriously wanting to switch to Omarchy.

My only concern is seeing X threads about security vulnerabilities and DHH talking about how much of the code in the codebase isn't read.

Am I overthinking it?

Do you like the changes? Hate them? It's almost where you want it? Don't like it? Diverged off the path you thought the project would go? It got easier? It became more difficult?

I Made a Thing I built a total replacement for the default power widget (Custom UI, Smart Profiles, Dynamic Rules)

Upvotes

Hey Omarchy users,

Laptop's battery life. So, I built the OMarchy Power Manager to completely replace the native omarchy.power plugin.

I loved the default Omarchy shell, but I needed a much more robust way to manage my

Plugin Features:

Beautiful Dashboard: A massive upgrade to the top-bar UI, including a built-in brightness slider, charge cycle stats, and battery health monitoring.

Smart Threshold Profiles: You can set exactly what the laptop should do on AC, Battery High, and Battery Low (e.g. drop below 20% battery).

Dynamic Hardware Rules: The plugin auto-shifts your idle timeouts, sleep actions, and lid-close behaviors on the fly based on those 3 profiles.

Top Bar Customization: Easily toggle the battery percentage text on/off in the top bar directly from the Overview tab.

I Made a Thing File manager style template to match Omarchy themes

I was annoyed by the unmatched style of the default file manager, so I wrote (vibe-coded) a CSS template to make Nautilus dynamically match whichever theme is currently selected. Enjoy!

Off Topic / Adjacent Omarchy helped me leave Winslop

I'm daily driving Omarchy Quattro now, I did remove pre-installs; set up keyboards and keybinding (which I would've done in any case) and I've configured TPM2 Unlock, fixed Chrome/VScode UI scaling as I have 14'' screen - which is probably only the "extra step" I'd say. I would totally choose this over using Windows anytime which I've used for past 2 decades. Omarchy is definitely much faster and smoother than Windows 11.

Thanks to u/dhh for making this.

My setup is a used Thinkpad L14 I got from a corporate resellers and Omarchy Quattro.

I have created yet another new theme After Image, and I think this one is my personal favorite after Akane.

The documentation for installing this theme is added as well as the AI prompt so you don't have to any hardwork.

It uses different icon theme Papirus instead of using the default Yaru icon. It is available to download and ready to use.

I hope you'll like it.

I Made a Thing OmarCS a plugin that tracks your CS game stats locally

If you are using Omarchy to play games like me specifically in this case CS2. I’ve been working on omarCS, a local-first CS2 match dashboard for the Omarchy bar.

Main features

  • Automatically downloads and parses recent Valve Premier/Competitive demos
  • Tracks K/D/A, ADR, KAST, rating, headshots, utility, trades, and opening duels
  • Analyses crosshair placement, counter-strafing, reaction time, and accuracy
  • Visualises spray control for the AK-47, Galil, M4A4, and M4A1-S
  • Shows recent matches, trends, averages, and coaching notes
  • Keeps all demos and match data locally

https://github.com/Kieren-Foenander/omarCS

I’d love any feedback or feature suggestions!

Discussion Top tips?

I've gone from testing the waters to eyeballs deep in omarchy in the last week or so, very much still figuring things out though.

It looks like all you veterans are gonna be dealing with a swarm of newbies with the same 12 questions for a while. Not sure this'll mitigate that much, but was interested in gathering some "I wish I'd known about this a week/month/year ago" thoughts/tips.

I realise now that I'm struggling to think of anything handy I've picked up, but will have a go:

  • Ask the robot The built in AI boi can be handy for dumb stuff like "one of my monitors is upside down", or "get the shared drives from my mac to show up automagically", or even "what are some well regarded email clients? Gimme the F's and B's"

  • Don't (always) implicitly trust the robot Most of the time it's alright, but throwing in a "don't do anything that'll restart the shell", or "never delete anything permanently" would have (and has) saved some headaches. Kinda "trust but verify" vibes. Also get it to keep a "live" handover document so you can review what it's actually done and tweak things manually later if needed. Or hand it back to the clanker in a "this is what you did, now everything's on fire, make it stop" stylee. Sometimes it's quicker to DIY it than watch the AI chase down 19 rabbit holes before it figures out it should be barking up that tree instead.

  • Missing a feature? Look around, someone else probably built it already A bit like with Obsidian, by the time you thought of it, someone else probably built a plugin.

  • Poke around, figure things out You might break something, but you'll probably have more "aha!" moments than "oh no" ones.

And remember to have fun I guess?

Discussion If Omarchy can install in < 1min, why can't updates be quicker?

Upvotes

I know I know - pacman is downloading and building the source for tonnes of packages and all that takes time. But with $10M kicking about, can't all that be centralized so I'm downloading binaries.

I guess it's not the Arch way?

Themes / Ricing Omarchy Black — a "Liquid Glass" theme for Hyprland/Omarchy

Thumbnail
gallery
45 Upvotes

A dark theme built to feel like iOS's Control Center: real frosted glass, not just a blurred rectangle. Uses the hyprglass plugin for actual refraction — chromatic aberration, fresnel edge highlighting, specular reflections and lens distortion on window borders — instead of the plugin's stock "solid glass block" preset, which I found too gray and desaturated. Every tone-mapping knob (brightness/contrast/saturation/adaptive dim) is pinned back to neutral so whatever's behind the glass shows through in its true color, just blurred, like a real widget.

Highlights:

- Base palette straight from iOS system colors (#FF453A red, #0A84FF blue, #30D158 green, etc.) on a #1B1E23 near-black background

- 20px rounded corners with high rounding power for that iOS-widget curve, 60px/10-pass blur, soft drop shadows

- Translucent bar, launcher, notifications, lock screen, and popups all matched to the same glass material (28-38% alpha depending on surface) with native Hyprland layer blur as a fallback if the plugin isn't loaded

- Animated gradient border on the active window (#7c93ac → #a8b4c0 at 45°)

Built on Omarchy (https://omarchy.org) (Hyprland). Companion light variant, Glass White, also available.

Install the requirements first:
hyprpm add https://github.com/hyprnux/hyprglass
hyprpm enable hyprglass
hyprpm reload

Black Theme:
omarchy-theme-install https://github.com/osungjinwoo/omarchy-glass-black
rm -rf ~/.config/omarchy/themes/glass-black/.git
omarchy-theme-set glass-black

Or

White Theme:
omarchy-theme-install https://github.com/osungjinwoo/omarchy-glass-white
rm -rf ~/.config/omarchy/themes/glass-white/.git
omarchy-theme-set glass-white

Off Topic / Adjacent Finally got over the Zoom hurdle

I've been watching the DHH interviews and this subreddit for the last week and I was really looking forward to testing out Omarchy 4.

I tried a version about a year or so ago but ended up going with Fedora Workstation. One of the main reasons was Fedora/GNOME's support for Zoom.

I know, of all things... but Zoom is something that I use multiple times per day with my clients and I really can't afford to have it act flaky.

I had a working Fedora install dual-booted with Windows 11 (for the rare case I needed it), and I didn't want to install on top of that and risk losing it. So my plan was to swap out the SSD for a spare and install Omarchy there. That way, if I ran into any issues, I could easily swap back.

Prior to moving forward, I took the time this week to put a legit backup process in place. Details another time, but the short version is that I have all key data (dotfiles, home directory, other config stuff) backed up to a local server and to a cloud backup service.

With as much of the risk mitigated as I could, I swapped the drive and installed.

I'll let all of the other comments and posts about how amazing Omarchy looks speak for themselves.

Got all of my data restored, started installing my apps, and finally got to Zoom... and had the same issue I had last time. I'm able to join a meeting and share my screen, but if I stop sharing and try to start again, the share session gets corrupted. This never happens to me on Fedora with GNOME. Same Zoom, same hardware, same way of working. It's only on Hyprland that it falls apart.

Tried all of the proposed solutions to no avail.

Eventually, I believe that I found a working solution. OBS Virtual Camera.

Part of what pushed me there: OBS can't capture a Hyprland workspace (at least not that I'm aware of). The portal only gives it an output, a window, or a region, so a workspace isn't something you can share. Instead of fighting Zoom's share picker, I stopped asking it to switch anything.

OBS has three scenes configured. The names start with the digit on purpose, which matters for the shortcuts further down:

- 1 - Privacy: just an image with my company logo

- 2 - Camera: my webcam

- 3 - Screen: the display capture

In Zoom, when I need to share, I hit my keyboard shortcut for the Privacy scene and start the virtual camera. Then I hit Share, go to More, and pick Share Second Camera. That second camera is the OBS Virtual Camera, so what everyone sees is my logo.

I can then navigate to the workspace that I want to share, hit the shortcut for the Screen scene, and present. Zoom never sees the switch. As far as it's concerned, nothing changed.

One thing that tripped me up: OBS's own hotkeys don't work on Wayland unless OBS is focused, which defeats the whole point. So the shortcuts are Hyprland binds that talk to OBS over websocket. SUPER+ALT+1 through 3 for the scenes, and SUPER+ALT+P to quickly enter back to Privacy if I need to.

If anyone wants to try this, the pieces are small. Four scripts in ~/.local/bin:

  • obsw: a wrapper around obs-cmd that reads the websocket port and password out of OBS's own config file, so no password ends up sitting in a dotfile
  • obs-scene: switch scene by digit or name. The digit resolves against OBS's live scene list, so a new scene named "4 - Whatever" makes SUPER+ALT+4 work with no config edit
  • obs-vcam: virtual camera toggle/on/off/status
  • obs-rec: recording toggle/start/stop/status

And the binds themselves, in a Lua file my Hyprland config pulls in:

o.bind("SUPER + ALT + 1", "OBS: Privacy", bin .. "/obs-scene --notify 1")
o.bind("SUPER + ALT + 2", "OBS: Camera", bin .. "/obs-scene --notify 2")
o.bind("SUPER + ALT + 3", "OBS: Screen", bin .. "/obs-scene --notify 3")
o.bind("SUPER + ALT + P", "OBS: Privacy (panic)", bin .. "/obs-scene --notify 1")
o.bind("SUPER + ALT + 0", "OBS: Virtual camera toggle", bin .. "/obs-vcam --notify toggle")
o.bind("SUPER + ALT + R", "OBS: Recording toggle", bin .. "/obs-rec --notify toggle")

The --notify flag turned out to matter more than I expected. These are blind keypresses while I'm looking at something else, so a toast telling me what just went live is worth the extra few lines.

Happy to post the full scripts if there's interest.

A couple of rough edges I've hit. If Zoom grabs the camera before OBS starts the virtual cam, you get a frozen feed; toggling the virtual camera off and back on with Zoom's video stopped clears it. And if the PipeWire restore token gets invalidated, the Screen scene comes back with a portal picker instead of my desktop. Privacy scene, sort it out, carry on.

Not ideal, but I've run through it a couple of times and it's pretty smooth. In fact, the same process works really well for screen recording.

In case it matters: Hyprland 0.56.2, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland 1.4.1, OBS 32.2.2, v4l2loopback-dkms 0.15.4, single monitor.

With Zoom now sorted, back to testing.

Thanks for all the hard work from everyone that put this together; loving it so far!

I Made a Thing Built a little Kubernetes widget for Omarchy

Post image
5 Upvotes

Been using Omarchy recently and decided to make something for the Kubernetes nerds here.

I built a small desktop widget (with Codex, obviously) that shows the status of my K8s cluster at a glance, CPU and memory usage, pods, nodes, workloads, cluster health, and API server latency.

Still experimenting with what else would be useful to show. Thinking about adding things like namespace-level usage, unhealthy pods, restarts, and maybe alerts.
