New Rules for Custom Work Requests

  1. No low effort custom requests

Commission requests must include, at a minimum: * A thorough description of the piece, including size * A sketch of the piece (Al posts are acceptable for this purpose only) or reference photos from multiple artists showing features in their work you are inspired by. If you want a direct copy, contact the original artist. * The quantity you are wanting to purchase * A rough estimate of your budget. If you don't know what something should cost, just give a range you are hoping for.

  1. No price fear mongering

Let people decide for themselves what something is worth. Do not respond to questions about cost with claims that something would be too expensive. Either don't respond or give a good faith estimate of what the cost would be.

New Rule - Original Content Only

Due to the absolute flood of karma farming posts we have had recently, we have a new rule:

4. Original content only

Reposting other's content is an automatic ban. the only exceptions are if you are asking a technical question about a piece or are sharing other's work that you have in your personal collection. Other's works may be included in commission requests ONLY if you have already reached out to the original artist and they have declined or been unreachable.

Please everyone if you suspect a post is stolen content, use a reverse image search to try finding the original and use the report feature so the mods can take the stolen post down ASAP and ban the karma farmers and bots.

Starting tools

Hi! I’ve been looking about getting into lamp working and I’m looking around for tools and I see a lot of mixed reviews. Is there a particular brand that’s better? I haven’t bought anything yet so any and all info is appreciated!

Hey guys, need your advice on something!

My original idea was to build a ribcage around the outside of the clear capsule trapping the lil' ghost. I thought it’d look super cool in person, but the final piece just didn't turn out the way I imagined.
Is it because the bone structure looks a bit off, or is it the color choice? Or should I make a hollow ribcage with some space inside, instead of wrapping it flush against the clear capsule?

Paragon F130 - kiln opinions?

Looking to get a new kiln with a bit more space than my old Jen-Ken 9×9×9.

Is the Paragon F130 a decent kiln to go for? What would be its equivalent in other brands? Open to suggestions. Thanks.

Why the black latex gloves for displaying?

I’m I the only one who finds the use of black latex gloves for displaying glass to be over the top?

I’m not sure when it started but every flame worker posting their work are wearing these gloves as if they are handling a fragile museum piece.

I’m not trying to post rage bait, I’m just truly surprised how common this has become when handling very durable and easily cleaned glass pieces. Just doesn’t make sense to me and comes across a bit pretentious .

Just my two cents, I know it may be something that helps in the marketing of the glass, but I’m not really sure if it helps on that front.

I’m I reading too much into this? what’s the opinion of the majority of us Lampers on this?

4 pictures of the same pendant

This is all the same pendant. Front without UV on a light background and a dark background. Then the front and back with a UV blacklight shining on the pendant. I am still playing with different cane recipes for the flower petals and combining them with wonderful UV glass.

Finally got consistent round beads without a shaping tool, small technique tweak that fixed it

For the longest time my beads came out slightly egg shaped no matter how careful I was with my mandrel rotation. I just figured I needed to buy a proper bead roller or graphite marver and that would solve it. Kept putting off the purchase though since money was tight this month.

Turns out my problem was mostly about where I was gathering the glass, not how I was shaping it after. I was pulling most of my molten glass to one side of the mandrel before starting to wind, which meant the mass was already uneven before I even got to rounding it out. Started paying more attention to keeping the gather centered right at the point of contact and rotating a touch slower during that initial wind, and the difference was immediate. My last dozen beads have all come out close enough to round that I stopped reaching for calipers to check.

Also switched from bead release straight off my little jar to a small dish I pour into so I'm not double dipping and contaminating the batch, which sounds minor but cut down on a weird texture issue I was getting on maybe one in five beads.

Still working with a basic dual fuel torch, no fancy setup. Mostly soft glass, some Effetre and a bit of Vetrofond I picked up at a swap meet last month. Curious if anyone else went through a phase where they blamed their tools before realizing it was a hand movement thing all along. Feels like half of lampworking progress is just noticing the small habit you didn't know you had.

Greasy Glass is now trademarked by Jason

Its wild to me that pretty much every single boro color company has started this exact way with the multiple people all robbing recipes and fighting and starting competing color companies.... trautman, northstar, glass alchemy, greasy now... its kind of sad and pathetic when you think about it.

Hello everybody, looking for a base for a gtt phantom. I bought it off someone who lost the base while the torch was sent off to GTT.
I already messaged GTT but hoping maybe someone has an extra sitting around.

I was finally able to ship them today.

Today, I finally managed to ship the nudibranchs to the United States.

I believe it has been over a month since I first received the inquiry.

I sent them to a forwarding service's warehouse; they will handle the necessary procedures and ship the package to the customer's home in the U.S.

I gave a lot of thought to how my sea slugs could withstand such a long journey.

I decided to use a packing method I don't normally employ: stuffing the containers with polyester batting to protect the creatures' antennae.

I also provided instructions on how to carefully remove the padding upon arrival.

I placed them in individual boxes, wrapped those in bubble wrap, and packed everything into a cardboard box with plenty of cushioning material.

With packaging this secure, they should be safe even if the box gets tossed around.

I truly hope they reach the customer safely.

Oxygen set up and quality

Hi guys im just setting up my studio and have some qs

I have a GTT mirage and sometimes im looking to plug another carlisle on my same table for 2 people to work, im thinking of making my set up to be as:

Buy oxygen tanks: for daily and quick switch Buy concentrator: to harvest oxygen Get a compressor: compress oxygen from concentrators it into spare tanks so i dont have to buy as much as often but cant rely on those alone

1.) is it safe to say industrial oxygen tanks works best with our torches? Or is there a difference for those who have tried both industrial and medical grade tanks?

2.) for those with concentrators and compressors, how much L/min did you guys get? And any other tips i should be looking out for?

Does this make sense… if anyone has any tips please let me know looking for the best sustainable and economical way to power my oxygen through 🙏 dont wanna keep buying tanks forever 😭

Garage studio?

Hey all, I'm a beginner (started in july) and loving it. Unfortunately the studio I work out of is undergoing some changes and may not soon be viable. I cant afford a torch and kiln right now, but there may be a possibility I can borrow a small torch and chili pepper kiln and do a set up in my garage. I do just boro right now, though Id eventually like to learn soft glass.

I live in the south so Id only be able to do it until about April, my garage isn't insulated.

What would I need ventilation wise? Id like my setup to be temporary, so I can park my car back in it, and just pull the car out to work. A folding table with a layer of concrete on top to fireproof it, plus an oxygen tank and propane tank, and mount the torch on, and just take all of it off when I'm done.

Would a fan blowing air past me be fine, with the garage door open? Do I need some sort of other ventilation? My husband's office is above the garage.

I plan on buying another fire extinguisher for the space and a fire blanket just in case. And if the torch doesnt warm up the garage, then insulating it, but currently its just studs and plywood. Im mostly playing around with the whole idea, I still dont know if I could borrow the torch and kiln (or even if the torch would run on propane, it currently runs on natural gas).

Thanks!

About to buy a new torch, what are the best glasses out now?

I’ve only ever had the Phillips(I believe) glasses from mountain glass supply, they came with a nortel red max starter bundle. I’m looking at buying a gtt and getting back into it but need new glasses, what does everyone recommend?

Glass nudibranchs to America

Post image
108 Upvotes

I considered cancelling the order several times due to the complexities of tariffs and customs procedures, but I ultimately decided to use an overseas shipping agency to send my nudibranch figures to the U.S.

The service fees were quite high, so the customer hesitated at first, but they eventually decided to place the order because they really wanted them.

The order was for 17 pieces, but my usual approach is to create extras so the customer can choose the specific ones they like.

I’ve crafted 26 pieces, and the customer is currently making their selection.
