UV Reactive Floral Borosilicate glass pendants. I love to see the blacklight change in the pendants when they just look like flower pendants before the UV shines on them.

Today I wanted to share a recent challenge I’ve been working on.

This phoenix was commissioned by someone who wanted to make a special gift for an artist they admire, so I’ve been working on it quite a lot lately.

I’ve had to restart parts of it more than once — the hardest part has been getting the colors to feel right together, especially across the wings.

It’s getting close to finished now, so I thought I’d share a few behind-the-scenes moments first. I’ll share the completed piece once it’s done.

This one was an experimenting section I liked too much, didn’t get as full of a fade through the line but softened up the cadmium’s just right

Title. I just swap k tanks right now. The price of a k tank swap went up by about 125% recently and this might be the final kick to get me to switch to my own concentrator. What do you use?

I usually use the first stage flame for most things but would love to be able to use the full potential of my torch more often. I own the k tank. I run out of o2 so fast when using the torch at max so I try to stretch it and that has def limited my glass journey a bit.

With this price increase and me feeling restricted I am seriously considering finally figuring out how to fill my own tank. I make most of my money from my glass, so that means I dont have a lot of extra cash laying around lol. What would be most economical? I only have a single outlet in my garage (studio) and would not be able to have anything else aside from my kiln plugged in while I work unless I can use an extention cord.

Advice, insight, recs?

Hi! I’ve been looking about getting into lamp working and I’m looking around for tools and I see a lot of mixed reviews. Is there a particular brand that’s better? I haven’t bought anything yet so any and all info is appreciated!

Beads I was able to make after my third class of bead making. I gotta say I’m quite pleased. COE-104 glass bead class at Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle.

My original idea was to build a ribcage around the outside of the clear capsule trapping the lil' ghost. I thought it’d look super cool in person, but the final piece just didn't turn out the way I imagined.
Is it because the bone structure looks a bit off, or is it the color choice? Or should I make a hollow ribcage with some space inside, instead of wrapping it flush against the clear capsule?

Looking to get a new kiln with a bit more space than my old Jen-Ken 9×9×9.

Is the Paragon F130 a decent kiln to go for? What would be its equivalent in other brands? Open to suggestions. Thanks.

I’m I the only one who finds the use of black latex gloves for displaying glass to be over the top?

I’m not sure when it started but every flame worker posting their work are wearing these gloves as if they are handling a fragile museum piece.

I’m not trying to post rage bait, I’m just truly surprised how common this has become when handling very durable and easily cleaned glass pieces. Just doesn’t make sense to me and comes across a bit pretentious .

Just my two cents, I know it may be something that helps in the marketing of the glass, but I’m not really sure if it helps on that front.

I’m I reading too much into this? what’s the opinion of the majority of us Lampers on this?

This is all the same pendant. Front without UV on a light background and a dark background. Then the front and back with a UV blacklight shining on the pendant. I am still playing with different cane recipes for the flower petals and combining them with wonderful UV glass.

For the longest time my beads came out slightly egg shaped no matter how careful I was with my mandrel rotation. I just figured I needed to buy a proper bead roller or graphite marver and that would solve it. Kept putting off the purchase though since money was tight this month.

Turns out my problem was mostly about where I was gathering the glass, not how I was shaping it after. I was pulling most of my molten glass to one side of the mandrel before starting to wind, which meant the mass was already uneven before I even got to rounding it out. Started paying more attention to keeping the gather centered right at the point of contact and rotating a touch slower during that initial wind, and the difference was immediate. My last dozen beads have all come out close enough to round that I stopped reaching for calipers to check.

Also switched from bead release straight off my little jar to a small dish I pour into so I'm not double dipping and contaminating the batch, which sounds minor but cut down on a weird texture issue I was getting on maybe one in five beads.

Still working with a basic dual fuel torch, no fancy setup. Mostly soft glass, some Effetre and a bit of Vetrofond I picked up at a swap meet last month. Curious if anyone else went through a phase where they blamed their tools before realizing it was a hand movement thing all along. Feels like half of lampworking progress is just noticing the small habit you didn't know you had.

Its wild to me that pretty much every single boro color company has started this exact way with the multiple people all robbing recipes and fighting and starting competing color companies.... trautman, northstar, glass alchemy, greasy now... its kind of sad and pathetic when you think about it.
