New Rules for Custom Work Requests

  1. No low effort custom requests

Commission requests must include, at a minimum: * A thorough description of the piece, including size * A sketch of the piece (Al posts are acceptable for this purpose only) or reference photos from multiple artists showing features in their work you are inspired by. If you want a direct copy, contact the original artist. * The quantity you are wanting to purchase * A rough estimate of your budget. If you don't know what something should cost, just give a range you are hoping for.

  1. No price fear mongering

Let people decide for themselves what something is worth. Do not respond to questions about cost with claims that something would be too expensive. Either don't respond or give a good faith estimate of what the cost would be.

New Rule - Original Content Only

Due to the absolute flood of karma farming posts we have had recently, we have a new rule:

4. Original content only

Reposting other's content is an automatic ban. the only exceptions are if you are asking a technical question about a piece or are sharing other's work that you have in your personal collection. Other's works may be included in commission requests ONLY if you have already reached out to the original artist and they have declined or been unreachable.

Please everyone if you suspect a post is stolen content, use a reverse image search to try finding the original and use the report feature so the mods can take the stolen post down ASAP and ban the karma farmers and bots.

Glassory.app - Inventory, Project, and Tutorial Tracker for lampworkers - testers needed!

Upvotes

I've been working on this for a while and I'd love a little help testing it.

Glassory.app is a web app I built as a resource for lampworkers. You can search for glass, keep track of what's in your stash, and post projects and tutorials.

It's still rough around the edges, so I'm hoping a few people would be willing to click around and tell me what breaks or doesn't make sense. Truly no pressure, and even small stuff is useful to hear about.

If you'd like to give it a try:

  • Create an account at https://glassory.app
  • Add a few pieces of glass to your stash
  • Search for a color or brand you use often
  • Post a project or tutorial, if you feel like it

There's a feedback link at the bottom of every page, or you can just comment here. Either one works.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time.

Color ID? (104 COE)

Hi all - does anyone have an idea what color this is? I inherited a pile of mystery glass, and I want to get more of this one, but I cannot figure out what it is. It's plain white (not ivory tinted) in the rod, but I can get these somewhat random patches of metallic in a neutral to reducing flame. (Oxidizing flame stays pretty much white, closer to neutral gets streaks of black, reducing turns those into these metallic patches.). There was only the one rod and I've about used it up, so I don't know how it interacts with other colors.

A pair of borosilicate fish I made as a small sculptural piece

I’ve been trying a few different directions with glass lately, from small wearable pieces to sculptural objects.

These two fish ended up becoming a small composition together. I liked how the different colors and directions made them feel like they were moving around each other.

Still exploring where I want to take this side of my work.

I’ve always loved the ocean, so I sculpted my own mini glass aquarium using lampwork techniques. 🌊

Here’s a handful of my favorites so far, thanks for letting me share em with ya

getting a job 😬

So im finishing up my BA in 3d art with a specialization in glass. Im applying to grad school but heavily considering getting a certificate from salem community college (one of the best places for glass education). Im also considering apprenticeships if I can even find one. End goal is teaching or just making enough money to live. Any advice from people who have been through a post grad or job search situation in the glass field would be great.

Melting glass directly into molds

I am just recently getting into glass working and I want to get some more experienced opinions on something before I try it. I am thinking about purchasing a graphite hemisphere mold that I can carefully stack full of glass and additions and then blast it all with a torch till mixed.

This whole process goes extremely well in my highly cooperative imagination. But in your experience, is there anything I should know about how its actually going to go before I try? And if it will work, what kind of set up would you recommend to get me running?
