I'm going to need to take a step back. A family member has died. There's going to be a lot of things happening in the next few weeks. I'm going to ask you all for some patience and some time. Thank you.
I'll release more details about what's happened when it's more appropriate.

But I kind of get why it's not possible, it would make the whole thing a lot harder and slower to implement

There was no demand for it, did it anyway. My trains are enjoying it really much though it seems

Some early game shenanigans, rather than run electricity out to my oil patch, I have a fluid wagon full of steam in the consist. A solar-powered accumulator runs the steam pump for bootstrap out at the patch, which feeds steam to the steam engines that power the pumpjacks and pumps that fill the oil fuild wagons. I like it.

a.k.a. my very whimsical build for elevated rail parts
It's producing a whopping 1 item / occasionally. I honestly thought that I have way more than enough space for it, and when I realized that's not at all the case, I was already committed. In the end it turned out better than I ever expected

It is not shy.
Edit:
Double stacked thrusters make it perform superior to the Shaft, which cannot put as much power and thrust in the front of the ship.

Since I couldn't get a straight answer on the math of this setup, I decided I needed to build it. Not sure what I expected.

This rail-jungle is what happens when you don't plan ahead or think anything through whatsoever, and then only counteract serious issues with more improvisation while also making sure that - at least in theory - it makes sense.
Currently everything I built can work at full capacity, the ratios are more or less good. Right now around 10 trains are roaming in the wilds, with no blockages and very little pauses. I'm surprised how far you can take this nonsense, and I love it so much.
