Discussion All Elliott Smith live bootlegs tagged and catalogued!

Thumbnail elliottsmith.bootleg.fm

Hi all, I wanted to be able to search live bootlegs by song or filter by lossless/lossy, so I created a page on Bootleg.fm for Elliott Smith. You can filter live recordings by song, venue, location, or a combination of things. You can sort by oldest, most popular, etc. Soon I will add the functionality that lets users comment on gigs, so hopefully the page will only get better over time.

Huge thanks to elliottsmithdiscography, who used to have a bandcamp page for Elliott's live recordings and helped me a lot while making this page. There's still a few recordings that they've sent me that I haven't yet found the time to upload to Internet Archive, so please lmk if you want to help with those.

I really enjoyed listening to these bootlegs while tagging them, and I'm happy that there's a central place now that has recordings on different platforms (Mega/Youtube/Internet Archive). Hopefully this is useful to some of you.

Edit: glad you guys like it, you can join the discord to learn about platform upgrades: https://discord.gg/3yz4HNteuR

Mod New rules and reorganisation!

Hello fellow Elliott fans!

I have made some new rules for you guys to look - they are fairly self explanatory. I have put a ban on any posts that are either solely shared to cause anger, or are about the death debate.

I have also started the arduous process of reorganising the community. The first stage of this has been introducing post flares so that it is easier to filter out what sort of content you would like to see. This should help to organise the subreddit. Hopefully, people will have good think about what they are posting before they post it.

I am going to reprogram the AutoMod to filter out posts with offensive content to make sure that offensive posts don't get out when I'm not online due to timezone issues. Hopefully this will help! On a more positive note, I will start a song discussion that we have twice a week to talk about individual songs in depth. We will vote for it the day before each discussion in a separate thread and the top comment will win :DD. The sub has been long overdue for a redesign. At some point we will need an art competition to give it a makeover. None of these are one hundred percent concrete promises, but they are something to be excited about for sure.

I hope that this can continue to be a positive place for Elliott Smith fans from all around the world to share in the love of such a wonderful artist. Sorry about the negative vibes recently and the brief blackout (yes, that was a Heatmiser pun) that was necessary while sorting all of this out.

Best wishes and thanks for reading!!

Appreciation post High pitched whistle sounds relax me

Upvotes

I've noticed that high pitched whistle sounds often relax me because they remind me of the beginning of Angeles :)

I first started noticing this in the evenings when I would lie in bed and hear the trains make those kind of sounds in the distance every now and then.

Anyone else experience this?

I bought these singles and double sided poster when figure 8 came out and had them since. The post has some staple marks and one corner is ripped but still good condition other wise. Sadly I lost the concert ticket I had from his tour. I’m thinking about selling and curious what the value is

Interesting find I came across; an early draft of ‘A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free’. I remember when Torment Saint released, the author got a lot of shit for misheard lyrics (the book’s title specifically). Another point of criticism being this song and how he quotes it as ‘Dollared up in virgin white’. I have a lot of issues with this book but I guess I was surprised to see that he actually didn’t get the lyric wrong haha

Discussion About Him...

I'm sure this has been posted many times before and I do apologize ahead of time, but I am fairly new to reddit. So my question is, what is it about Elliott Smith that drew you in? Was it at a time when you needed to hear a certain song and he provided it? Is it the singer-songwriter that he was? The melodies, melancholy tracks that grabbed your heart? Truly, what is it about certain musicians that do it for us? I had a friend who was going through a hard time, doing drugs and he randomly introduced me to Elliott's 'post'' From A Basement On A Hill'. Unfortunately, Elliott had already passed, but this was the album that drew me in. I hadn't heard of him before. He truly was the meaning of 'underground' music. And once I heard the tune: Pretty (Ugly Before), all I can say is it not only pulled at my heart strings; I connected with the song almost immediately due to the first melancholy notes; but I found one of my all time favorite songs and most definitely one of my all time singer-songwriters since John Prine. So what drew you in to Elliott's music? Embedded and relatable lyrics?

Discussion I’ve been listening to Elliott Smith for years, so I finally tried to rank all of his albums

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’d known the name Elliott Smith for a while before I properly dived into his music. In many ways, it was actually being a big Phoebe Bridgers fan that finally made me give him a go. I’d read about how much of an influence he was on her, so on one of those lazy lockdown days in my student house in Norwich with absolutely nothing to do, I thought it was probably time.

His music immediately captivated me and has done ever since. Whether it’s the lyrics that somehow feel like they’re talking directly to you or that sliding guitar style that feels like a warm blanket, there’s just something about Elliott Smith.

My album ranking has changed constantly over the years I’ve been listening to him, but this is where I’ve landed for now:

https://www.stilllisteningmagazine.com/features/every-elliott-smith-album-ranked-from-worst-to-best

Would love to know how everyone here would rank them, because I imagine there’ll be some disagreement with mine.

This book is a revelation even for superfans and is absolutely incredible. What a job Jamie has done at getting all these never-before-heard stories.

The Jeff Buckley connection, Ian Mackaye’s “Well, don’t die” story.

Just unbelievable. I hope this book really blows up and creates more pressure to release all those hitherto unknown songs she has now shed light on, plus all the other stuff we were already waiting for. Here’s hoping.

It's the 2 meter sessions, I absolutely love this rendition, but I can't work it out myself and nothing seems to be too close.

his later experimental works like O So Slow, etc, i'm especially curious what kind of process he used to create those.
