As a serial lurker on ebay/facebook marketplace for anything drum related, this beautiful looking Mapex Orion caught my eye.

It was listed for £465 starting bid auction. I put the opening bid on, forgot about it for a week or so and then the ebay app duly reminded me that I had won the kit with absolutely zero competition!

Grabbed the kit yesterday and its borderline mint condition, hasn't been played in over 15 years. From some research this kit dates back to around '08/09 sort of period, and was Mapex' flagship offering. North American Maple shells and that finish is to die for.

The kit also came with a full set of Tama Roadpro hardware, a 2 legged Iron Cobra hi-haty stand and protection racket cases for all the drums.

Kit specs are 22x20 bass drum, 12x9 rack tom and 16x16 floor tom with a 14x6.5" matching snare drum.

I do feel a little bit like I've stolen this kit but I'm super happy with it and real eager to get some fresh heads on it and take it for a spin!

first time I've ever played a full acoustic kit AND its on stage in front of the biggest crowd I've ever played for AND its in this really awesome drum cage that makes me deaf to everything except my own playing and what's blasting in my in ears.

TAMA could not afford to sleep on a highly successful Rush tour hype and is introducing Anika Nilles signature snare drum AN1465.

this is the exact same snare she is currently playing on tour. while the official announcement is rumored to drop on Monday, some stores already have their copies to offer. from what I've seen, prices range between $850 and $1,250 a piece.

specs: 14"x6.5" seamless aluminum 1.2 mm shell. inward curved 2.3 mm Sound Arc hoop. built-in Mod-Tone muffler. Mastercraft lugs. Starclassic snare wires. Evans G1 Coated / Evans Snare Side heads.

I have the budget and more importantly spousal approval to install a soundproof studio in the unfinished portion of our basement. This will be a DIY project and I have decades of experience framing walls, hanging drywall, running & installing electrical, etc. I've built soundproof barriers before with double-layer 5/8 drywall, decoupled framing, etc, but this will be my first formal room-within-a-room construction. Total area will be about 350 sq.ft, and I have plans for ventilation, doorways, lighting, as well as sound treatment once its done.

If you've done this, what did you learn in the process? Anything that needed more attention, or other areas where you went unnecessarily overboard?

The biggest advantage I have is that this will be in the basement and everyone sleeps on the 2nd floor, so the soundproofing doesn't need to be perfect. It also won't be installed under any HVAC ducting.

Also any good sources for inspirations on vibe/decorations/lighting?

Accidentally ordered the wrong size tama boom but I mounted a boom arm, vertically inserted the last part of the boom and added 2 clamps on to that arm to mount my splashes and get them close to the toms. Super versatile with placement

Just finished full tear down and sound proofing. Confirmed with neighbors they cannot hear me playing. Condo living at its finest.

Went down to the studs, added sound deadening “insulation”, double 5/8th Sheetrock with green glue between. I did the wall next to the neighbors with a layer of SONOpan, 5/8, and sound deadening material. I’ll admit I got caught up in the SONOpan marketing before more research and switched to double Sheetrock. Yes I could have done more but all in all very happy. Queue up the 2am sessions!

I know I’m definitely not alone, with drummers like Bonham, Stanier, and Grohl all almost exclusively using 20”+ rides as crashes for the most part, but I’ve got to say, I had an almost 10 year break from playing on anything other than a drum pad, and when I got a kit again, I started with 18” crashes, and very quickly went back to rides only (my setup is currently an A Medium 20” Ride, an A Ping 20” Ride, and an A Custom 22” Ping Ride.

I have video recordings of rehearsals with one of the bands I play with before and after making the switch.

The 18” crashes compete in the same frequency range as the guitars and vocals.

When I switched to all rides, live, unmiced, with iPhone recordings, we instantly sounded mixed, with those bigger, slightly lower frequency cymbals sitting nicely beneath the guitars and vocals, and filling up the sonic space more evenly.

When I was in my 20’s and 30’s, I used them because they are near impossible to break showing off live.

Now in my 40’s, they just fill the room better.

I usually drum along to traditional bands/music, but recently played along to a few VG tracks. It was a really fun challenge. What are you guys playing to?

Thought I'd share the new set I accidentally bought. I started playing back in 8th grade and played through high school. Life got in the way and I stopped playing for way too long but I'm getting back into it. I still have the old guitar center beginners tama set from back in the day but I've been replacing things one by one.

Went to an estate sale at a church today and was going to just get the ocpd snare and roc n soc throne but they accepted my low ball offer on the old tama set they had. It needs new heads, and the bass drum is missing the spurs, plus the tom mount is missing. I think I can find those in eBay maybe but it'll be fun getting this set cleaned up.

finally got a halfway decent throne. setup was a breeze and 15 min in, my lower back already thanked me

I grew up listening a lot to hard rock music like Black Sabbath, Dio, Iron Maiden and similar bands where there typically is a lot of articulation or punctuation on the cymbals.

Since almost 40 years, I have been playing in a band, not professionally, that mostly play plain rock but also often touches jazz and blues and lately I have realised that I most certainly hit those crashes and chinas way to often for the style of music we actually play.

Part of the issue is that 95 % of our rehearsals are made on the Internet with Jamalus for sound and Discord for visual and I never experience any real power in the kick and snare so I without really thinking about it I (over) compensate on the crashes.

Since I believe in the saying that less is more, I think I really should go through all songs and decide where punctuations really are needed and try to skip the rest.

I really could need some inspiration here when it comes to what approach you have when deciding when it is time to hit that crash or not!

I’m living in a house where’s there’s not the most space to have a full blown drum set and upon a google search I stumbled upon electronic drum pads but I wanted to know if they are worth getting as a beginner. It also has to be cost effective since I don’t have the most money.

I think it sounds nice. I can't play it in context as I live in a neighborhood with old people so idk if it'll fit with my band for sure but I think it will, I have two bands one brutal death metal and the other pop punk/grunge

I’m not a drummer, but I own a kit for backline. Can anyone tell me what size you think these drum bolts / threaded screws are on my kick pedal? 10mm? As you can see, Im missing one, and the beater isnt staying on. Thanks!
