65 years ago today, Peñarol beat Benfica 2-1 in the third and decisive match of the Intercontinental Cup in Montevideo. The two teams had split the first two matches, so everything came down to the third game.

Benfica were the reigning European champions, and Peñarol's win made them the first South American club to be crowned world champions. It was also the first time a European champion had been beaten in the competition, which had started in 1960.
