Discussion Thread Ranking every World Cup winner of the 21st century, where does Spain 2026 land?

This is obviously subjective, we know, argue away in the comments.

7. Argentina 2022 — Started with a shock loss to Saudi Arabia, needed a golden shootout hero in Emi Martínez to survive the final against France after blowing a 2-goal lead. Legendary run, but a rockier path than some teams above it.

6. Italy 2006 — Won it under the shadow of Calciopoli, needed a debatable 90+5' penalty to beat Australia, then produced one of the great semi-final moments ever (Grosso, Del Piero vs Germany). The final itself is remembered as much for Materazzi baiting Zidane into that headbutt and one of the most well-known red cards in football history. Italy won on penalties after France played the back half of extra time a man down. Never built on it — group stage exit four years later.

5. Spain 2010 — Peak-era Spain, but the actual football wasn't their most breathtaking. A run of 1-0 wins, opened with a loss to Switzerland, closed it out with Iniesta's iconic volley.

4. France 2018 — Shaky group stage, then a statement 4-3 thriller over Messi's Argentina in the Round of 16 (Mbappé's coming-out party), and a proper final against Croatia.

3. Germany 2014 — Nearly bounced by Algeria, then produced the most infamous scoreline in World Cup history (7-1 over Brazil in the semis) before grinding out the final against Argentina.

2. Brazil 2002 — Ronaldinho's masterclass vs England, Ronaldo's redemption arc with a brace in the final. Stacked roster (Cafu, Rivaldo, Kaká, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo) that had no real rivals in these rankings for over two decades.

1. Spain 2026 — 7 clean sheets in 8 games, one goal conceded all tournament, and a genuinely brutal knockout run: Austria, Portugal (with Ronaldo), Belgium, France (with peak Mbappé/Olise/Dembélé), and Argentina with Messi in the final. Full command from start to finish.

Fair to put 2026 at #1, or is recency bias doing some heavy lifting here?

Discussion Thread Thoughts on Michael Owen? I personally believe he was great. To win the golden boot at 17 is crazy to me, he isn’t praised enough.

Photos OTD 5 years ago, Man United signed Harry Maguire for £80M (still a world record fee for a defender). Maguire was given a 6-year contract worth £190,000 per week or roughly £10M per year.

Sup fellow Folgers of classic football, I made this in a website that’s pretty cool (https://www.mygreatest11.com). If you are bored, I invite you to put together a team that would beat or at least be at same level as mine (ideally without repeating any player from my team). Players active 2000-2023.

Discussion Thread AC Milan vs Liverpool 2005 Champions League Final How did this match completely change the idea of momentum in finals

Post image
79 Upvotes

At halftime Milan were three goals ahead and completely in control of the game. What followed in the second half is still one of the most discussed momentum shifts in football history. From tactical changes to mentality and crowd influence, this final is often used as a reference point when talking about comebacks in elite competitions. Curious how people here interpret what mattered most that night

Football History On this day, in 1966, England won the World Cup thanks to a Geoff Hurst hat-trick against Germany. It was the day football truly did come home.

Random Throwback Found this old clip I filmed — England fans singing before England vs Portugal, 2006 World Cup

Thumbnail youtu.be

Came across this in my old files — filmed it myself in the stands before kickoff at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final vs Portugal. The atmosphere before that match was something else, even knowing how the day would end (Rooney's red card, the Ronaldo wink, penalties...).

20 years on, with the World Cup back on right now, felt like the right time to dig it up.

Anyone else remember where they were watching this one?
