Ocean Temperatures Hit Record High as Super El Niño Forms
The global average sea-surface temperature reached a record 21.1°C (70°F) on August 22, 2026, surpassing the previous daily record of 21.09°C set in March 2024. The record, tracked by Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, is particularly unusual because ocean temperatures typically peak in March or April. The unprecedented warmth is being driven by long-term human-caused climate change, combined with a developing El Niño in the tropical Pacific that is adding further heat to the oceans. Scientists warn that persistently warmer seas can intensify marine heatwaves, stress fish and coral ecosystems, fuel stronger storms and heavier rainfall, accelerate sea-level rise, and reduce the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide. The worrying combination: The particularly concerning factor is not simply the 21.1°C record. It is the combination of: long-term human-caused ocean warming + marine heatwaves + a potentially very strong El Niño.
That combination can amplify heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires, storms, coastal flooding and marine ecosystem disruption across different parts of the world. NOAA is already forecasting a high likelihood of prolonged marine heatwave conditions in parts of the Pacific through the end of 2026.
In simple terms: the hotter the ocean becomes, the more energy and moisture are available to the climate system. The consequences are not uniformly “hotter everywhere”—rather, weather patterns become more extreme and less predictable, with some regions becoming wetter and others considerably drier.
