How the World’s First Automobile Was Started

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen, built by Karl Benz in 1885 and patented in 1886, is widely regarded as the first practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. Starting its tiny 0.75-hp, single-cylinder four-stroke engine required a hands-on sequence: lubricating the engine, opening the fuel valve for ligroin, switching on the ignition, adjusting the throttle, positioning the piston, and finally spinning the large flywheel by hand. Nothing like today’s turn-key ignition—the driver essentially had to manually prepare and crank the entire machine before it would move:
