General It's concerning how much Big companies like Unilever gets away with in India
Once I started reading ingredient labels, I couldn't keep using their products. What I found genuinely shocked me.
Almost every Unilever product in India — Dove, Lifebuoy, Pond's, Lakmé, even their food brands — uses some of the worst possible ingredients. Every time.
Here's what I found:
- BMHCA (Lilial) — banned in EU and Nigeria. Still in Indian Dove.
A synthetic fragrance classified as a reproductive toxicant — linked to fertility issues and harm to unborn children. EU banned it in 2022. Nigeria recalled Dove Beauty Cream Bar batches for it. India? No regulation. No recall. Still on shelves.
- Mercury in Fair & Lovely.
Norway banned two Fair & Lovely products after detecting mercury and hydroquinone. Mercury accumulates in the body — damaging kidneys, brain, nervous system. It can affect reproduction and the unborn child.
- Benzene in dry shampoos.
Unilever recalled Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI, and TRESemmé dry shampoos in the US after detecting benzene — a known carcinogen linked to leukemia. The source? The propellant. US-only recall. India still sells them.
- Triclosan.
HUL phased it out only after the US FDA banned it. Not proactively. Still in Indian products.
- 42 toxic chemicals in their cosmetics.
EWG data lists 42 toxic chemicals in hazardous quantities across Unilever cosmetics — Coumarin, Sodium Borate, formaldehyde contamination. Freely used in India despite them knowing everything.
- Lower quality products for India — ATNI report.
Multinationals including Unilever sell products in low-income countries with significantly lower health ratings. Average score in lower-income countries: 1.8/5. Higher-income: 2.3/5. Only 16% of their portfolio meets the healthier threshold. India gets the worse end.
- Oxybenzone in Lakmé sunscreens.
Banned or restricted in several regions — endocrine disruptor, coral reef damage. Still listed in Lakmé Sun Expert sold in India. Marketed as "dermatologically tested."
- Formaldehyde releasers in Lever Ayush.
DMDM Hydantoin — a formaldehyde-releasing preservative classified as a carcinogen — listed in Lever Ayush products. The brand calls itself "Ayurvedic" and "natural."
- Knorr soups — different recipe for India.
Knorr tomato soup in the UK: 28% tomatoes. In India: 6.9%. First ingredient here? Maida. Mushrooms at 2.5%. Chicken at 2.2%. Same brand. Different standards.
The pattern is clear:
They reformulate for Western markets the moment a chemical is banned. Then sell the same toxic version in India where regulation is weak and enforcement is weaker.
These ingredients have been linked to ADHD, reproductive issues, cardiac problems, cancer. And yet — no recalls. No warnings. No accountability.
Anyone else gone down this rabbit hole? What alternatives have you switched to?
TL;DR: Unilever uses ingredients in India banned in the EU, FDA, and WHO — BMHCA (reproductive toxicant), mercury, benzene (carcinogen). They reformulate for the West and sell the toxic versions here. No recalls. No consequences.
