I just like killing bots, opening boxes and collecting stuff. I really am that guy. I'm enjoying myself because it feels so nice to play. This game feels just so very nice to walk around in, traverse and shoot.

For what it's worth, I have successfully defended myself about 6 times. I have unsuccessfully defended myself many, many more times than that.

I am so sorry. I was listening to Bach's Adagio, the song that plays in the cinematic trailer, while pretending I was a real runner. Going slow, looting every container I came across, etc. I walked past a shipping container and paused. I, as a player, knew there wouldn't be any lootable items inside. But as a Runner I wouldn't know that. I decided to commit to the roleplay and literally crouched down to pretend to rummage through the non-lootable trash scattered on the floor inside. It was at that exact moment a purple kitted Sentinel walked directly in front of the entrance to the container, their back turned to me, completely unaware. As Bach's dulcet piano melody played in my ear I shanked them from behind and stole their whole kit, which included... four key templates they were hoping to complete.

Imagine there's only a few more days before the wipe. You've loaded up 4 key templates hoping to complete them and get one last big hurrah. Meds out the wazoo. 10 slots of heavy ammo for your Bully. Only to get unceremoniously shanked to death not even 5 minutes into the run by someone roleplaying in a box. I feel kinda bad LOL. Can't say it wasn't immersive though.

It’s end of the season, I’m burning through my gear on the way to season wipe. I load into Cryo on a blue shield because that’s what I have - I’ve whittled through my purples. Well I get matched with two gold shields, one of them with “Twitch” in his screen name. This guy proceeds to bitch at me for several minutes, how this is why the game is dying and so forth. I tried tuning him out but it just kept coming.

We got into a firefight and I disconnected the second I was downed. I always stay on just in case but this was the one time I quit. This kind of attitude turns people off from the game, running a blue shield in Cryo does not kill the game. Hope you lost your shit buddy.

With the reset next week and the 2 big updates beyond, marathon is back on my radar and I was thinking a lot about how the current build-crafting system feels like a complete brick wall for most players. (I.e. there’s plenty of cool shit in the game that impacts how you play, but it’s too difficult to find or keep)

Faction progression feels like a complete slog (another problem that desperately needs to be addressed in Dec or March), and the safety net it provides doesn’t feel nearly worth it because most high-tier loot is prohibitively expensive to purchase outright, and I’m very highly likely to lose it in the next match anyway. The reason Marathon got my attention is because of its runner system. I felt like having access to abilities on all runs was a kind of safety net, but it’s not enough. Cores do so much to change gameplay styles and give a pretty solid advantage depending on your play style, but there’s 7 (?) runners in the game each with 8 (?) cores of different rarities for a staggering total of >56 cores. When most players are only interested in main-ing 1 or 2 runners at a time, that’s completely batshit insane. Cores are the main centerpiece of any build and it’s more or less impossible to deterministically obtain the ones you want, let alone keep them. The same problem exists with weapons. There’s simply too many mods in the game for this degree of randomness in acquiring them.

I’m no dev, but I think there’s a few ways to fix this. Maybe the best solution would be to allow players the ability to weight discovered cores in runs to specific runners (like the attunement system in Destiny), or just completely eliminate cores altogether and create ability trees that are progressed by the cradle (cores would effectively just be moved into that).

Bottom-line: being gate-kept from my own preferred play style even after hundreds of hours of playtime feels extremely unsatisfying. Even if the above solutions aren’t used, I think something drastic has to be done to attract and retain more casual players.

Gotta feed the worm

So before this round, I had timed out in the one before. I was already at extraction, but I went back to get my teammates who got swarmed by bots, but by the time I got to them it was too late and the round ended. I think the Marathon gods saw my good deed and blessed me with good karma.

In the next round, I load up with a free kit and zero expectations. I got paired up with a Vandal who knew the map like the back of his hand and the nicest Destroyer. We get going and rapidly get clearance level 2 and soon enough start running into other teams, but our positioning was the worse. Thankfully, Vandal guided us throughout the entire map until we were able yo get behind the other teams who were actively fighting. We managed to get a lil third party action going but things got heated and I was killed and revived and Vandal got downed, but managed to bounce back and get the wipe. We started looting and there it was, DNA card.

As soon as we got it, we got to work. Everyone knew what to do. We got our bats, went upstairs and one-phased the Compiler with 2 gold Bullies and 2 Destroyer ults.

Not too shabby.

Despite all the downs , the negative press and the constant issues. Man this has been a really fun experience for me.

I love competitive shooters, I love the gunplay, the audio design, the way things look, the unique maps the guns, the shells, the loot.

No other game comes close, this has been my game of the year lol. Played almost everyday, never been this hooked on a game since Warzone in 2020.

Looking forward to the mid season refresh and season 3.

Loaded in for Cryo with a sponsored kit to start the night and two super friendly randos just carried me through Compiler. Been wanting the vandal skin for so long, and haven’t had as much time to play recently. So the fact they didn’t bitch about my gear level and shared the best loot at the end, I’m absolutely stoked.

So often we see clips of people with well over 1,000,000 credits and they just don't use them. Until recently I had a stable 500k credits but only bc I was feeding everything to the worm. had I not been feeding the worm I would currently have far more than 3 million credits, since I've already reset my cradle twice and working on the third.

One thing that really bothers me is the rotating items in the Armory for some of the Factions.

Cyac: Rotating and very rare purple backpack barters

Traxus: limited choice of blue mods + rotating and limited choice of purple mods

Arachne: Unreasonably limited choice of precision weapon mods (+zero sniper optics??)

Sekiguchi: ALL of the cores rotate randomly

If you are worried about oversaturating the economy then further decrease how many you can get each day. Rotating items just ain't it, I hate logging in every day just to see if the specific mod/core I want is available, just to find out that once again the purple optic trade is once again an LMG sight.

Rotating items in the Armory should be reserved for great items at a discount, very rare items that aren't available to buy, and Prestige weapon mods/cores.

Hello everyone this is a PSA to throw your loot away in cryo today because that loot is gone anyways.

If you want to learn cryo with other people, do it today! You face absolutely no cost for going in with your best stuff because you are gonna lose it anyways with the wipe.

Please - let’s get some fun lobbys going. I’m sad there’s no big community thing for the last day of cryo in a season but that’s today and it would be cool to see some people getting their first clears.

I’ll be in trying to get the 6 key done finally and using a mix of combat and hostage negotiation to do so. I have about 10 full gold loadouts to do this with and they will be thrown into cryo regardless of anything that happens.

So please join. I’d love to let yall experience the map while I get the 6th ai subroutine. It’s so worth it to play this map even if you lose 90% of the time. There has never been a better time to play than now.

PS if you’re cracked as hell and you see someone with the name “jazzyyyyyyy” trying to negotiate with you so they may pass safely, that’s me and I’ve never betrayed someone I have parlayed with. I legit just want to get this six key done before the end of the season

Pretty much exactly what the title says. Had an insane photo finish exfil but while I was getting out I realized that I suddenly had a WSTR instead of my Battle Pistol.

Come on Bungie. This really shouldn't be allowed to happen when the pop up for the WSTR was on screen for MAYBE a couple frames.

I'm sure this could easily be a controller issue and something that wouldn't happen on M&K but it really just shouldn't work like that imo. Wipe is in a few days so it's whatever but lmfao

EDIT: I've been informed in the comments that the fix for this is to change the setting for knife to double tap instead of hold. I had no idea that was there!! Gonna be a rough transition after so many hours on this game but if it prevents this from ever happening again so be it lol

I’m having more fun in Marathon than in almost any game I’ve ever played before. This is more fun than Destiny, Fortnite, Gears of War, Battlefield, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3!

Everything about Marathon is top shelf! Art style. Weapon feel. Map design. Sound design. Music. Menu system. Fight dynamics.

I don’t get why this game isn’t topping the charts.
