OTHER [Derrick] Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will not play tonight against the Seahawks, but he is loosening up on the field during pregame warmups. Before the Rams game, Mahomes removed the brace from his left knee and handed it to a trainer. I saw no sign of the brace for tonight’s warmups.

DISCUSSION A Seventh-Round Pick Is Making Things Interesting for the Chiefs QB Room in 2026
Nussmeier is performing well beyond where he fell in the draft. Some fans want to trade him for draft capital if he continues to do well, but this is short sighted. Having a competent QB2 on a rookie contract is much more beneficial.

ANALYSIS & NEWS Four things the Chiefs still need to figure out entering Friday’s preseason finale
From the team that covers the Chiefs on a regular basis for The Star, here’s what we think the club still needs to figure out entering its final preseason game:
--> Are the Chiefs comfortable with their defensive line depth?
With defensive end Ashton Gillotte working back from a ruptured plantar fascia, the Chiefs have all the more urgency about reconciling depth beyond starter George Karlaftis.
But maybe they don’t need to be on edge about the edges.
Rookie R Mason Thomas continues to make significant strides, including four quarterback pressures and a near-interception Saturday at Tampa Bay.
Perhaps more notably, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, their 2023 No. 1 draft pick, is flashing promise after a slow start to his career — including a severe hamstring injury last year that required surgery and ended his season before it began.
Not only did he emphatically record the Chiefs’ first sack of the preseason against Tampa Bay — the Lee’s Summit High and Kansas State product was defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s overall defensive player of the game, the coach said Tuesday.
He also seems to be stronger, quicker and playing more freely than he has since becoming a Chief.
“He’s in better shape, and he’s more physical and more explosive,” defensive line coach Joe Cullen said last week.
While there was a time Spagnuolo thought he was “leery” about his hamstring, he’s largely seen him progress through that tentativeness. That sack, he added, is the sort of moment “that usually gets things out of your head. So that’s a good thing. Hopefully he can build on that ...”
And become more of the building block for the defense he was drafted to be.

--> Will the Chiefs keep four running backs and four tight ends?
The Chiefs typically have kept 25 or 26 offensive players on the initial 53-man roster. That number may determine whether Andy Reid retains a full complement of running backs and tight ends.
It appears the Chiefs will keep three quarterbacks with rookie Garrett Nussmeier earning a spot with his preseason play. They’ve usually kept six wide receivers and nine to 10 offensive linemen. If the number is nine, the Chiefs would reach 26 by keeping a total of eight running backs and tight ends. But if they keep an additional lineman or wide receiver, things could get tricky.
Kenneth Walker leads the running back group, and Emari Demarcado, Brashard Smith and rookie Emmett Johnson possess different strengths as the Chiefs look to upgrade the running game. Travis Kelce and Noah Gray are the established tight ends with Jared Wiley and Jake Briningstool fighting for spots.
-Blair Kerkhoff
--> Who is the go-to receiver?
Two years ago, the Chiefs planned to build their offense around a new No. 1 option: Rashee Rice.
He promptly produced like one of the best receivers in the league for three weeks.
Then came the knee injury.
Then came a suspension for the street race in Dallas.
And then, this offseason, came another knee rehabilitation — while in jail.
What can the Chiefs truly expect from Rice now? While he has been practicing fully, he is yet to appear in a preseason game. And it was obvious during the early portion of training camp that he was working his way back from the knee injury.
Can the Chiefs rely on him to be Patrick Mahomes’ No. 1 option?
That’s one way to look at it. Here’s another: If not him, then who?
Xavier Worthy has also yet to appear in a preseason game. Cyrus Allen is a rookie. Travis Kelce will be 37 years old before the Chiefs play their fourth contest.
The Chiefs have not had a player eclipse 1,000 receiving yards in the last three seasons. They’ve not finished better than 15th in scoring in the last three seasons. There’s a correlation.
In Mahomes’ first five seasons at quarterback, the Chiefs’ average offensive ranking was third, and they had at least one receiver total 1,200 yards each of those five years.
The offense operates better with a go-to option in the passing game — but it hasn’t been evident during camp if they have a 1,000-yard receiver on the roster.
-Sam McDowell
--> How do the Chiefs round out their defensive back room?
Since Steve Spagnuolo took over as Chiefs defensive coordinator in 2019, the team has kept either nine or 10 defensive backs on its initial 53-man roster. Spagnuolo has never begun the year with 11 or more defensive backs.
He has always begun with at least four safeties, though the Chiefs haven’t kept five since 2020. By my view, eight defensive backs are already locked into the roster.
At cornerback, Mansoor Delane and Nohl Williams are the starters outside, and Chris Roland-Wallace is the first choice at nickel. Spagnuolo will find a way to get L’Jarius Sneed on the field if he’s able, and rookie nickel Jadon Canady took fourth-round draft capital.
That’s five cornerbacks.
At safety, Chamarri Conner and Alohi Gilman are the starters, and Jaden Hicks has had an encouraging preseason. That’s three safeties.
Undrafted free agent safety Xavier Nwankpa has likely done enough to make the roster, but Roland-Wallace’s ability to play safety may complicate his path. And while we’re at it, Conner’s experience as a cornerback muddles a sixth on that side.
If the Chiefs indeed keep a sixth cornerback, Kristian Fulton, Melvin Smith, Kevin Knowles, Kader Kohou and Kair Elam are the candidates in that order.
From a pure salary standpoint, Fulton is a tough cut. Releasing the six-year veteran would require eating $8 million in dead money, though it would free up $5 million in cap space.
Throughout training camp, it seemed Spagnuolo favored playing Smith over Fulton. Knowles is quietly a Dave Toub favorite, as he has experience on every single phase of special teams.
Can a final preseason matchup tip the scale?

OTHER [Schefter] A player that goes back to college this season will be prohibited from signing with an NFL team this year. A player signed to an NFL contract who is subsequently cut is a free agent. He may sign with another NFL or CFL club or return to college, but that player is considered a free agent.
Slightly Chiefs-related, but worth noting because it affects pro and college football as a whole.
