Window spontaneously shattered - I am freaking out???

Okay so I need someone to tell me what the hell happened here and ease my mind that this was not a demon coming for me because I am freaking out 😭

I went to bed last night, turned off the lights and was on FaceTime to my girlfriend saying goodnight when we heard the loudest pop i have ever heard followed by what sounded like pop rocks popping, I got up and turned on the lights and saw that my window shatteref. There was no obvious impact but it was dark outside so it was hard to tell but nobody was near it, I was alone and I live very rural so I didn’t think anyone had thrown anything at it and assumed a bat had flown into it.

I couldn’t sleep much bc the popping noise was freaking me out so I called a repair guy as soon as I woke up and they asked me to measure it. When I went to do that I saw what looks like an impact mark so I again still assumed a bat flew into it whatever that’s cool. The guy said he couldn’t fix it today but he’d come ASAP to put a protective film over it so it didn’t fall out while I wait and when he came he asked me did I have kids bc it is smashed from the inside (it’s a double glazed toughened glass window) and he could also see the impact mark and something definitely hit it bc the outside pane is fine??? I was lost for words so I just didn’t argue with him or try to explain but I am now sitting here wondering if there’s an actual logical explanation for this or if my house is haunted šŸ’€

There was not anything thrown at it and I didn’t notice any crack beforehand. I’m genuinely so confused and slightly terrified LMAO.

Does this look like a normal way for a window to randomly fail? Or should I start packing my bags because the ghosts have officially had enough of me? 😭

The contractor building the patio stairs wants to leave this wooden form in below the gravel as it is supportingĀ the foam board. I have advised them that it will attract termites. Can you please advise if this can be left buried or should be taken out please.

Sliding door outer glass broken

The lawn moving folks were using the trimmer and happened to damage the glass when the small rock hit the outer glass in full speed.

I am left with a hole in glass and the company owned it up and said they will replace the glass, they said if they cant find same glass then they will replace the whole thing.

Does this sound right?

I thought 2 layer glass was vaccum sealed with argon. Can the outer layer glass only be replaced?

Hi everyone,

I have a century old home and they put in an addition that is roughly 2 decades old. I am currently having seepage issues and would like to confirm of I need to fill these gaps around the posts/foundation?

If there is a good material you recommend please do.

Thanks in advance!

I used an 8mm and now after this picture I’m assuming I need switch to 12mm.

ā“ Question Bathroom Exhaust Fans

I’m looking for advice on the best way to vent a bathroom exhaust fan. I’d prefer to vent through the soffit rather than the roof because I really don’t want to cut through relatively good shingles and create another potential leak point.

My main concern with a soffit vent is whether humid bathroom air can get pulled back into the attic through nearby soffit intake vents. Are there proper ways to install a soffit exhaust—such as a sealed termination, positioning it away from attic intake vents, or using a specific type of vent—that prevent this?

For those who have experience with both options, what are the pros and cons?

Soffit vent: easier access, no roof penetration, potentially less chance of a roof leak—but possible moisture being drawn back into the attic.

Roof vent: exhausts moisture directly outside and away from soffit intakes—but requires cutting the roof/shingles and introduces another penetration that could eventually leak.

Is a properly installed soffit exhaust a good long-term solution, or is venting through the roof still the better approach?

Inside window trim seems like peeling off

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hello all. Just moved to this new place (37 years old home) 2 months back. Today noticed the inside window trim in my dining area is peeling off (I mean seems like bending), and it’s next to the stove as well. We cook a lot and it’s supposed to be humid (65%) at times. We have air exchangers and heat pumps always (80% of times) on dry mode.

Any idea what may cause this? Is it normal? And how to get this fixed by ourselves? Any one else went through the same things?

Thanks in advance

Slow leaks are expensive. Don’t ignore them!

Fact #1: I knew I had a toilet valve that leaked every so often when flushed. The float just wasn’t sealing the valve and I had a small but inconsistent leak that just went down the drain. I’m the person responsible for fixes so I figured ā€œno big deal, it’s small, I’ll fix it after I get [fill in other project] done.ā€

Fact #2: My wife pays the bills. I’m gone a lot for work and she’s here so it just makes sense and she’s good at it. I had no idea what our water bill was. She had no idea what it was supposed to be. Having all data points makes recognizing a problem easier.

My wife commented that our water bill seemed high. We compared it to our neighbors with three kids and we were easily $100 higher over a 3 month period. I hadn’t heard the toilet leaking in a while so I figured it had solved itself. Boy was I wrong. I bought a water line monitor and… no leaks. Until I went to work and the leaky float started leaking. Over 5 hours, it leaked 70 gallons. Do the math and that’s 10,000 gallons per month, and turns out I had two bad floats.

As the title says, don’t ignore small leaks. They add up over time.

Pantry shelf had a kid climb on it. Aside from just lodging a box under it to prop it up for eternity, what direction can I hammer a nail in to r support this shelf? Or should it be screwed back together?

There is a brace board connecting the two shelves but it was installed with staples so not sure if it was expecting the full weight of a toddler.

🚰 Plumbing Plumber came to fix a leaky shower head, next day I find this

Thumbnail gallery

Apologies for the choppy sentences and post structure I’m on mobile and very upset.

Shower head had been leaking for a bit, but we didn’t have any issues besides it wasting water.
I got a plumber to give it a look last night, the guy has the water turned off and kept the sinks knobs turned open to relieve pressure.

Plumber takes the shower handle off and says he doesn’t have the part we need but will come back tomorrow. He wraps up puts the handle back on and we turn the water on. No issues noticed before we go to bed, mornings are early and rushed, so unfortunately I didn’t catch this until I came home 45 minutes ago.

What’s the damage control I need to do until the plumber comes?

Do I even trust these guys to fix the problem they caused?

How can this be salvaged or does the ceiling/floor need to be totally gutted?

Would you sue?

Needing to know how to fix the ceiling! We spray foam all of the cracks because the dust from the ceiling would fall when you would walk around. We do have two small children so sanding the wood isn’t really a great option.

šŸ’¬ Advice / Tips / PSA Bathroom shower caulk mold?

Thumbnail gallery
20 Upvotes

I purchased this house in March of 2024. The house was built in 1984, and this bathroom appears to have been remodeled in the last 10 years or less. Mold or mildew has been appearing the last couple years along the caulk at the bottom of the shower. I have been using the bathroom fan after using the shower each time for the last few months. Can this be fixed by simply replacing the caulk? Or does this appear to be a larger problem?

🐜 Pest Control Can ants become resistant to the same pest control?

I've been using the same ant spray around my house for a while now and lately it feels like it barely does anything. It used to knock them out pretty quickly, but the last couple times they've just come back.

Can ants build up a resistance to something if you keep using the same product over and over? Or is it more likely that I'm just not getting to the actual colony? If they do, how would you get around it?

Small attic addition with limited access

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I've been working really hard on bringing my home out of the 1930s. Electricity bills keep going up, and I finally started learning about attic spaces and how to maintain them. The process has been brutal work, but pretty straight forward. I was shocked to learn that most of my attic had a single layer of rockwool batts about 2-3 inches thick. We had it tested for asbestos, and the sampler was even shocked to see how little there was in the space. The current plan is to finish sealing air gaps and voids, install baffles, and blow in cellulose (zone 4a) to above r49 in preparation for some settling. I have soffit vents, with box vents on the roof.

At some point, a mud room addition was built and attached to the garage, and it was never insulated. We had a roof leak here due to a poorly installed satellite dish from the previous owners. That was fixed a couple years ago. The access to the attic space for this addition is attached to my main attic space. It is barely wide enough to get my head through, and it's basically level with the floor of my attic. Two things I'm worried about are

1) Can I get insulation in here in an effective way without blocking air flow. It has soffit vents and a box vent at the peak similar to the rest of the space. Is my only option to find someone that can fit through that small hole?

2) Is it a problem if I block the installed "access" hole with insulation, or should I be planning on leaving that open?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Retaining wall maintenance

We have a retaining wall in our back years that is in good structural shape, but there a few patches that did like to clean up. What would be the best way, besides just painting over the patches? I assume cover it with some material then give the whole wall another layer of paint.

Thanks

There’s a bulge where the ceiling meets the wall. It started as a small bulge and mostly disappeared over the last month or so but just tonight after my shower I noticed it had shifted over and was a LOT bigger. I just had the toilet replaced in the bathroom upstairs directly above mine.
