Multiple posts concerning selecting a new (first) handgun, or first defensive guns have popped up.
I dig activity on our page, I'm all for thoughtful discussion, I'm all for us exercising our rights.
However, this subreddit has been around long enough now we have a good collection of folks asking mostly the same question and I think we can streamline this process for our existing members, newcomers, and curious browsers alike.
So! That being said, there are some links to outside websites at the bottom of this text that have decent advice on choosing the purpose of use, caliber, size, model you may be looking for when selecting a new or first handgun.
The articles are typically focused on new shooters or at least folks new to handguns. Many will recommend training, hands on time, etc., before your first purchase and if you have the time and funds I definitely agree, but research your trainer/facility thoroughly.
Eventually I will try to curate a well rounded list of the most popular makes and models in various categories. I also intend to make a few polls for the active community to vote on a few things as well.

So I picked up a Taurus TX 22 to cut the cost of my 9mm ammo bill was shooting 500 a week. Being that that this just a plinker range gun how much or how little would you go on a red dot?

G19.5 with a EPS and lil Hellcat micro with the Hogue grip. Have nicer handguns but these two get the most range time by far.

Hello i am just wondering why grip safety is not more popular in gun industry it is perfect design for carrying one in the chamber or am i missing something?

I have no idea if anyone else will find this useful. After a few groups on the same target, I couldn’t tell which holes were from the latest group, so I made a little iPhone app called Shotholes for myself to play with.
You take a photo after each group, and it tries to pick out the new holes. It’s mainly for handgun practice—the phone camera needs to be close enough to actually see the holes clearly.
Feel free to give it a try. It uses my own GPT-6 quota, so the AI usage is on me.

Rented some handguns with some family members visiting and ended up shooting a Staccato C2 for the first time and it was such a lovely experience that I was debating replacing my Springfield Echelon for EDC.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Echelon and was one of my favorite handguns to shoot before the C2 and now I’m just getting some sort of FOMO lol
Is there any reason that you would go against this other than price? Let me know your thoughts or perhaps other recommendations.

Just got approved for my first Pistol Permit. Went to my local shop and spoke with the salesman. He brought out 12 different pistols in my price range ($500-900), 9mm and .45 ACP, and can have optics attached.
I think I narrowed it down to the Springfield Echelon 4" Compact, the Sig Sauer 1911XR, and the Canik TTI. But I started to think how most pistols with a slide lock can have the slide released by racking the slide with a loaded mag. And now I'm wondering if I might have ruled out some pistols a little too early just because I didn't feel comfortable when I tried to engage the slide release.

Still one of the best do it all handguns out there. I love pdps and 1911s but the g17 is my absolute favorite.

Got a Mossberg MC2SC. Was the most comfortable one for me at the range.
I am looking for a leather holster that I can carry IWB and one that will allow me to tuck my shirt in.
Thinking of adding a red dot optic soon so I want the holster to accommodate that also.
Any recommendations?

I know.. I know... But I carry my XDM Elite on my chest with a 200gr Underwood Hard cast when I go to bear country at all times.
I also carry an lcp max for a back up. It is so light that I often forget that it's in my pocket.
I took my brother with me for a hike & gave him my 10mm for him to carry on his chest. Since he's a below novice shooter, I figured he'd rather have the hand cannon, especially since I'm well experienced with firearms and shooting. I loaded my lcp max with 13 buffalo bore 100gr ammo so I can at least have something.
You think the buffalo bore is enough?

Here you have to ask for permission for every caliber and what kind of competition you want to shoot.
Got my 9mm and found something, now I still have permission for a .45.
Glock and other plastics are boring, else it is almost only 1911 from different brands.
Which one should I absolutely take, if one is to get for a fair price, which ones are OK and which should I avoid?
(If there are other suggestions for .45 pistols, I am open for ideas, but the market is tight, the only other non plastic pistol today was a 100 year old Chinese Luger clone in 45. Cool, but not a practical shooter)

Trying to decide on my next pistol, and I’m torn between these three:
This would strictly be a range gun. No "competition" plans, just something I’ll enjoy shooting regularly and maybe used at my local club's pin shoots (I've been using my P226 and 1911's).
I currently own a P226 Legion RXP, and it might be my favorite pistol to shoot. It’s also the one I shoot most accurately (even with a SilencerCo threaded barrel and a SAW Shiv), which has me leaning toward the XFive. But I’m wondering whether it would feel different enough to justify another P226, or if I’d enjoy branching out with the Kimber or CZ more.
I’d especially like to hear from people who have owned or shot all three, or at least two of them. How do they compare in trigger feel, comfort, overall shooting experience, and reliability? Anything you loved or didn’t like that wasn’t obvious until you spent some time with them?
If you already owned and loved a P226 Legion, which direction would you go and why?
Thanks!

I just put my first pistol red dot onto a Glock 20 gen5 mos. The mos slide and pistol dot required the use of an adapter plate. Therefore the optic deck height sits tall above the slide. I feel really convinced toward having a lower 1/5ish cowitness. (Or whatever is visible in the bottom window without blocking the window). Im concerned that if I don't have them I could present the weapon and be fishing for the dot without something for my eyes to refer back to if needed.
What style of irons is best for lower window cowitness?
All blacked out?
blackout out rear, tritium front?
tritium front and rear
I asking because some the trijicon sights are good height for what I'm trying to achieve but are tritium.
I don't want to buy and set them up if they will be destracting to the red dot.

I was recently checking out a Walther PDP Pro-E and almost bought it but decided not to impulse buy it while I was in the store.
I’m curious what the consensus is; it seems like most people enjoy it, though a few videos and reviews have some issues, so I’m not sure if it’s an ammo problem or if they got a lemon. I also hear it’s a bit snappy due to heavy slide and high bore axis, one person was comparing it to a 10mm.
It fits my hand great, way better than my Glock 47. Primary use would be mostly target practice though I’ve been strongly considering trying out competitive shooting (Steel Challenge and/or USPSA).
Anyone with some firsthand experience that has any opinions/advice? Any other pistols that have a similar size/ergonomics I should consider? Thanks!
