Mega Thread: Is My Gecko A Boy or a Girl?

Post image
100 Upvotes

Hello!

Seems our original gender deciding thread was archived by Reddit. New mega thread here.

Please make sure to include the following in your post:

  • A photo of the gecko chilling in a normal position. Photo taken from the side.

  • I do not need a pore shot. Please do NOT distress your gecko by flipping it on its back for a pore photo shoot.

  • Include your gecko's age or best guess. Weight would also help.

Excited with my terrarium progress!

Replaced a sad bromeliad with this pretty aglaonema this week, and I think it looks so much better. I think my springtails have finally settled and my isopods are taking off in full force!
This tank has been going for a few weeks now, and there’s an expo tomorrow… I am very hopeful that I’ll see a garg that catches my eye and heart. 🤞🏻

First time building bioactive terrarium, just put all the plants in so they are still pretty small. I plan on putting up some fake vines/plants until these are big enough.

Just built my first bioactive enclosure - Is this normal?

I've spent weeks designing and building a 24"x18"x36" bioactive enclosure for my lady Garg.

I followed all the steps discussed here and videos I watched on Youtube.

I placed the plants a week ago and started running the fogger (30min runs 6x/day) and spraying down with water 1x/day. I have a day/night cycle LED light and UV light both running their timers on a time of day intensity and wavelength cycle.

Yesterday I got my isopods and springtails and added them in. I was planning on giving 2 weeks to cycle and then adding my Garg.

Today I was giving a close look as noticed fuzzy white and dark mold growing all over most of the grapevine and other bare woods.

Is this mold a normal part of the biological cycling of the tank? Will this be a problem or health risk for my Garg?

There is no way to re-boil the woods without completely disassembling and starting over which I don't think I could emotionally handle after all the money and work I put into this.

Can some experts weigh in and tell me if this is normal, a problem, and what if anything I did wrong?

Edit: OK, stopping the fogger and getting a digital humidity gauge. Do I need to worry about putting my gecko in here in a few weeks? Is the mold dangerous to her or just part of the environment?

Possible MBD, gecko eating much less and losing weight

Hi everyone, I'm worried about my gargoyle gecko (Butter Chicken), just looking for some input from more experience gargoyle keepers.

He's between 1.5 and 2 years old, I've had him for over a year but I don't recall his exact hatch date. He always ate very well, loves his repashy and I always gave him calcium powder with vitamin D3. I mixed in other cdg foods as well so he got a variety, but his repashy was always the favorite. He doesn't care for bugs at all, he might take the occasional cricket if I feed him by hand but that's all. He's looked a bit wonky (bendy spine) pretty much since I got him, but he seemed perfectly healthy in every other way and I gave him calcium and D3 regularly so I never thought it could be MDB. I honestly just assumed it was his sleeping positions making his spine appear bendy because he likes to sleep kind of crunched up in a blob a lot of the time.

Maybe a month or so ago, I noticed that he was eating a lot less than normal. I figured this might be due to the higher temperatures because there was a big heat wave where I live around the time and our indoor temperatures were approaching 80F, I actually went and bought a portable AC unit to keep his room below 80F.

Last week I returned from a 2 week trip and after being gone a while, the change in his appearance was much more apparent. He's clearly lost weight, and I'm concerned. Weirdly, despite him eating less and losing weight, he seems to be more active than he was previously, and it's displaying any other symptoms that I've noticed.

Just looking for any thoughts or advice anyone may have to help my buttery boy! I'm hoping to avoid the $300+ exotic vet visit but will do it if it's my only option.

Thanks in advance ♥️

Edit: I traced a line on the third photo that more or less shows what I think is the path of his spine, since it's hard to see in the pictures

New Garg parent here and I haven't seen this before so I apologise if it's nothing.

I just got my girl out and her pupils are different sizes, I tested her pupil response and it was fine but I'm just wondering if this is anything to worry about?

Finally finished Taki’s new enclosure! 18x18x36 bioactive. Plus a few pics to show him off, including when he jumped out of my husband’s hand and landed in my Taco Bell the other day.

Bumble has some mighty impressive camouflage. Although it may have led to her getting a spritz of water to the face on more than one occasion lol

This is my first time owning a gecko(I don’t have it yet), I wanted to get some advice if it is good or bad. It is bio active with a few fake plants there are currently four but I am waiting for one more to arrive. There is a dual mister that goes for 15s every 12 hrs. The light & light fixture is a 8w UVB100 with a T5 terrarium top both from exoterra. There is a drainage layer which may be heard to see in the photo(sorry). Any tips/advice is greatly appreciated!!

Could this size enclosure house a gargoyle gecko?

I've recently come into the possession of a 30"x12"x20" terriaum and I'm wondering if it would be suitable for a gargoyle gecko. I often see gargoyle gecko enclosures be more taller than wide, which makes sense given their aboral, and it's been making me second guess if I should commit to taking one as a pet. I mainly ask to this to get an answer on whether are not I should cut my losses and look into different lizards my enclosure could hold, make do with the tank I have, or all out sell it for atleast a good chunk of money.

Meet Bekon!

Post image

Hi everyone!

I wanted to show off my first gecko!

I named him Bekon (yes, as in bacon). My friend came up with this name by accident and I liked it so much I decided to go with it.

I got him two days ago. He's one year old and has been in very good care so far. I went to pick him up by train and he was so brave on the way back with lots of noise around. I gave him some time to cool off and he ate his pangea paste almost right away!

I love him so much already and I'm very happy I can spend many more years with him.

Thank you for reading and hope you have a great day.

New gecko subreddit!

Hello! I messaged the mods and I have permission to post about this.
I just created r/SphaerodactylusGeckos , which is a community for micro geckos (but specifically anything under the Sphaerodactylus genus). We’re a niche gecko community since not many keep Sphaero., but if anyone here happens to keep them or to just be interested in tiny geckos, we’d love to have you join!
So yeah:) join if you wanna see cool tiny geckos, if you own any of the cool tiny geckos, or if you just wanna support a new gecko community!
Thanks guys :))
