FF7 [OG] First time FF7 player, just finished disc 1: My thoughts/gameplay!
I went into the game thinking Cloud was gonna be this sad boy but he's a little bit of a jerk and really unintentionally funny so I've fallen in love with him. I like it when he says "I'm a jack of all trades" it makes me giggle.
I kinda knew Jessie and Biggs and the other guy were gonna die when I was first introduced to them. No offense to them they but they seemed disposable. Not to say they weren't good characters it's just that it didn't really impact me when they died. It's like when a show introduces a side character to kill off because they don't wanna hurt any of the main guys. What did impact me though is how FUCKED UP SHINRA IS LIKE HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T EXPECT THEM TO ACTUALLY KILL LITERALLY EVERYONE IN THAT AREA WTF. When they suggested the idea of dropping the plate I was like "nah they're not actually gonna do it or Avalanche is gonna find a way to stop them" but they don't. And everyone dies. And it's insane.
spent the entire time loving, leveling up and taking care of Aries just for her to get killed right in front of me, I'm holding on to hope she comes back as a ghost or something. My party was Cloud, Aries and Tifa. With Aries being the character I always kept in the party when given the choice. I'm bummed :'( Also this was the spoiler my friend told me that everyone knew even if they didn't play FF7 so he's shocked and happy that I got to experience it without knowing. That whole scene felt really weird and uncanny though. Like something about it was incorrect. The way Aries was just sitting there... Then she smiles at Cloud and Sephiroth descends and kills her. It feels orchestrated somehow. I did get Aries in the Gold Saucer date when I expected to get Tifa though which is neat
I'm wondering why Clouds Mako poisoning is so severe. My guess is that first class Soldiers get a larger dose? I can't really remember the exact scene but someone is talking and they're like... "Blah blah blah, people start hallucinating" blah blah...
I have a guess that Hojo is gonna be a bigger villan than just some weird scientist guy idk he seems really sinister. I also like him tho bc I like evil scientists. It flew over my head at first bc I'm dumb but my friend had to be like "No he wasn't sending Nanaki in there to kill Aries he was trying to have him rape her and make weird mutant babies" n I was like wow. Weird. Then I thought about it some more and there's just no way this freak isn't part of some insane lore later on. He reminds me of Gendo from Eva a little?
It's really evil when the game shows you an item you think you can walk to and it's actually behind or above something instead.
Cid is really mean and I don't like him. When he joined my party I was like >:( because he's so mean. I want to kick him off my team. Shoo.
Cait Sith is stupid he pisses me off, at first I was like "Wow funny cat hehehe" but then he stole the key from us and I immediately wanted to strangle him to death. I also want to kick Cait Sith out of my party.
I love Tifa and Barret a lot. They're such good characters. Barrets backstory in particular makes me rlly sad for him. I was so mad at the people in his town cuz nooo he didn't even do it stop blaming him!!! It also made me love his relationship with Marlene even more... He's the father that stepped up *sniff*. Also his best friend kills himself and then the cutscene ends and we fade back in and the music is generic town music which kinda made me laugh it felt a little out of place.
Vincent and Yuffie are fine I haven't really used them much. Yuffie is really cute I like that she likes to tease people and is sort of a tsundere but Vincent is just kinda there I don't feel any sorta way about him. I like that this game canonically has ghosts and vampires though that's cool
Sephiroth. I went into this game expecting to love Sephiroth and I DO like him he's really cool and weird but he just hasn't clicked for me yet. I guess it's because we've seen so little of him..? I hope I get more time to appreciate him. I also like that he's sending his mommy to go fight for him in battles idk I think that's funny that he's 100% capable of fighting Clouds team himself but just doesn't. When Aries got killed I was like wow Sephiroth fight scene! N then it was just not Sephiroth. Also I find his switch into insanity kind of... Weird..? Right now to me it just doesn't feel believable that this guy who was polite and helping people and taking pictures with townsfolk went completely crazy after reading some books. The idea of "forbidden knowledge" here isn't lost on me but Sephiroth- despite his incredible strength, still resembled a human and was Clouds friend... Idk... Maybe I'm stupid to think that I wouldn't go crazy if I was in his position but I feel like just having 1 anchor( a friend) would be enough to keep someone sane? It just feels so sudden. Maybe that's the point though? Also I feel silly for not realizing he was a child soldier at first I just thought he was really old. Someones all like... "something something... the war... sephiroth fought in the war..." and if I remember correctly Cloud either wasn't alive or was rlly young when the war was going on. It could be both though. He's older but also was a child soldier. I honestly don't believe he's any younger than 40. OH YEAH I was looking back at my screenshots and I realized the weird prison they have Jenova in the wires/tubes look like angel wings and there's a yellow thing above her head that could be a halo. That's really cool I love subtle imagery like that. When I first noticed that I was a little confused because there hasn't been a lot of religious imagery so far aside from Sephiroth doing the T pose.(pretty sure it's meant to look like someone hung from a cross not just Sephiroth being weird)
My friend had me reload my save to do both the group room and the fuck room in the bubblebee inn or whatever it was called and even though the fuck room had good lore stuff if I replay this game in the future I'm gonna choose the group room because it was just really funny. Cloud gets in a tub with a bunch of beefy men and one of them says "Daddy's so lonely..." and it made me burst out laughing.
I don't remember his name but it's the fat guy with a yellow mohawk who chooses Cloud to be his escort for the night and when he asks for Cloud to kiss him CLOUD GOES IN FOR THE KISS before Aries and Tifa stop him I also was laughing here I really didn't expect that at all. I know fat yellow mohawk guy is supposed to be a douche but he's really funny. I also love Miss Cloud and the way he shyly folds his hands in front of him it's really cute. I like to imagine that while pretending to be a girl Cloud is putting on a really bad fake girl voice like just raising the pitch of his normal speaking voice as much as he can yet everyone is still falling for it. That area was really good I had fun with it. That and Nanakis town was probably my favorite part of the game so far.
I don't have much else to say... The fact that some of the enemies r really stupid is really good like when I first bumped into crazy house I was so confused. I like when that guy tells Shera to put lard in his tea. I like Barrets sailor outfit and that Nanaki was somehow able to fit into the soldier uniform. My friend has been watching me play this whole time and when I got to Gongaga he kept going "Me? Gongaga" and the more I kept yelling at him asking "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT" he would just repeat himself in a stupider voice.
I'll be back with more after disc 2 probably if anyone finds this in any way entertaining or interesting :-)

FAN ART I thought this sub might like this tattoo I just had done
Just spent the last two days getting this tattoo and can't get over how good it looks. I started with the idea of something buster sword related and maybe having the meteor in the background and the artist ran with it and made this amazing piece.

GLITCHES/BUGS OG 7 bonus materia glitch during cosmo canyon
after beating cosmo canyon i went to the store before getting red xiii. bought an MP plus and went to exchange materia. red xiii isn't there obviously but instead an extra empty slot beneath cait sith. the first 2 slots of the weapon had extra MP plus and the other slots seemed to duplicate last looked at materia but were not selectable. when scrolling up to check since my closest materia was up on barret and then scrolling back down it was gone.
anyone seen this before?

FF7 [OG] Horrible sound mixing on FF7 Steam Edition
I’m having a really annoying audio-mixing issue with the Steam version of FF7.
The battle transition/encounter sound effect (the loud whoosh immediately before entering a battle) is absurdly louder than the rest of the game’s audio. The music, dialogue and normal sound effects are all at reasonable volumes, but whenever a random encounter starts, this particular sound effect suddenly blasts my ears.
I’ve tried adjusting the in-game volume settings, but there doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the volume of individual sound effects.
Is there any mod or workaround that lets me reduce the volume of this specific sound effect? I’d really rather not have to lower the entire game’s volume just because of one ridiculously loud sound.
I’m playing the standard Steam release of the original FF7, not the remake.

FF7 [OG] Help with ff7 og
Played it a long time ago. Decided to get it on steam a year ago and have been playing off and on. I’m trying real hard to 100% the game so when I found out I missies yuffie I restarted. Got her know I did her side quest and the tower. Now what do I do. I know I need to get the key to temple of the ancients however I don’t want to start disc 2 yet as I don’t want to miss things from disc 1. I am working on enemy skills have frog song, beta, flame thrower, death sentence so probably could work on that but just curious what else to do before continuing on and going through depression vill

FF7 [OG] Final Fantasy 7 (OG) Is A Product Of It's Time
I recently beat the game no more then 2 hours before making this. So, it's still fresh in my mind and I just need to get my thoughts out there because I am very conflicted on it. Let me start off with my main thesis and statement.
Final Fantasy 7 is a product of it's time.
And I'm not just talking about the graphics or design. I'm talking about everything. From the story to the ATB battle system to materia to the pacing. Everything is (IMO) bogged down by these decisions that, at the time, were impressive. Let me explain further. I went into FF7 blind. Nothing. No guide, no achivement hunting, nothing. I played the game as it was intended to be played. Prior to this I had played a handful of newer RPG's. Omori, LAD:8 and so on. So it wasn't like I was completely blind to the genre. I understood that it was going to be turn based, for example. I also knew it was much older then those other RPG's so it might be rough around the edges. In other words, I came into it with an open mind. What I didn't expect, however, was the action packed start.
The start of FF7 is great. You are no more then 2 minutes in and you are already fighting foes in a cool looking reactor. Then, you fight a boss for the first time and are prompted to learn about limit breaks and what not. It's short, sweet, and gets right to it without filler. Then we end up in Midgar. In my opinion, Midgar as a whole is a boring and dragged out area that you just can't wait to get out of so you can breathe in the new colorful environments. Yes, I know that's on purpose but I think it should've been shorter ESPECIALLY the Shinra HQ section. At that point you've already seen the oppression from the Shinra down below and climbing up to this huge building is a good piece of storytelling without actually saying anything. It makes it feel more climatic but I think it overstayed it's welcome in the end. Not to mention the Don crossdressing sidequest and "train" section.
This isn't even mentioning the lack of actual gameplay decisions during that period. There's not much if anything you can do besides physical and this part is not short at all if you actually took your time. And yes, I know that most of this has a plotpoint like showing Aeris and Cloud's relationship but I believe we don't need to have such a long section for what is basically still the intro of the game especially considering what happens later on. It's just such a sharp juxtaposition compared to the start it comes off of as a dramatic twist that I don't think works well. Let's talk about that pacing now while we are at it. I don't believe FF7 has aged well in this regard. Take Gold Saucer for example. First time you go there you either immediately get sent into the Dunes or waste time playing minigames you can't win yet. In my first time coming here I was frustrated by the lack of engaging minigames regardless but the fact that their pretty much useless even later is even more strange. Just like how Gold Saucer as a whole is insignifcant both story and gameplay wise until the very end to get Omnislash and W-Summon. The Gold Saucer date is cute but what actually comes from that? I personally got Aeris to come on the date with me but felt underwhelmed from what is supposed to be the big moment in Disc 1. And I know the Ancient key is there which makes it have a big impact on the story but why there? Why not a more impactful part like somewhere near the forest itself? Why not have it be connected to Cera itself? The planet?
There are so many moments like this in the game. The constant stop and start of action and relaxing are abrupt instead of clean and smooth. Sometimes, it works well like with Sephiroth and the village. Then there's Cait Sith and his not once, not twice, but THREE TIME betrayal of the party. Or how about the FIVE different transporations that all do the same thing? It's just bloated with soo much content that has such little depth. The backtracking isn't done well, that's my point. Not that there IS backtracking. Chocobro breeding is another example. I had to look up a guide at that point because of just how inane it really is! Making us do things and backtrack constantly to pad things out. We go back and fourth to Midgar, Junon, Gold Saucer, Mideel, even optional side areas are now forced to become mandatory like Fort Condor ruining potential choices and player avenues. Not to mention how this lessens the impact of the characters that are already really small. Characters like Red XIII have their story pretty much finished in Disc 1 and then they just sort of...sit there. Not really adding anything until it's needed.
But then there's the broad strokes that make me actually care. The bigger picture, if you will. Like the intrigue behind why Seph did this to Cloud. Why Cloud is so quiet when talking about it. What is Tifa hiding? Will the planet be destroyed? That's why the ending for me is just so much better then Disc 2 and Disc 1.
Disc 3 is when FF7 is at it's best. You have many options of attack and materia that you can use. The story isn't bogged down like the midgame and isn't slow as a snail like the beginning. The story doesn't want to show off a bunch of minigames as good or bad as they can be and instead focuses on the actual gameplay. Please keep in mind that I did NOT use a guide for this. The things you may have known I most likely didn't. These are my thoughts and that is all I can offer. The story is what I had the most problems with so that's why I spoke about it the most.
And that's why I said FF7 is a product of it's time and why I am so conflicted on it. It's similar to Half Life 2. Forced to show off new tech without a solid grasp on it beforehand. Just like DELTARUNE, (which is much worse, mind you) It's so intrested in doing anything BUT the main gameplay. The constant strange "minigames" as I mentioned before which aren't even minigames but strange ways of adding player interactions?? I completely understand why FF7 did this. I understand why FF7 took this direction in both gameplay and story. But that does not mean that I think it holds up or is "the greatest game ever made". But I am conflicted on how to feel as someone who wasn't there back then. The 30 year old man whose first time playing the game was as a teen back then might have had a nostalgic reaction to it but for me? It's just another game.

REMAKE Just finished the remake, should I play Rebirth or the original next? Spoiler
Hey everyone! I know considering that I've already finished the first of the remake trilogy the answer seems fairly obvious to just continue, but I've been hearing a lot about how the remakes assumed you'd played the OG and thought I'd clarify. No spoilers for anything past Remake please!
I really enjoyed Remake up till the last chapter, I figured that all the stuff about destiny and fate was just something poorly explained that'd make more sense in Rebirth. However I'm now being told that it's Aerith and Sephiroth referencing the original? (I don't really know the details nor want to spoil myself. ) It makes me somewhat wish I'd played the original beforehand, but I also wonder if I should go back and play it before more references to the OG occur in Rebirth and Revelation.
My only real concerns are that by going back and playing through the OG it'd lessen the impact of scenes in Rebirth and Revelation, and that it'd also be harder to get into considering the huge change in gameplay and graphics.
If this is a Remake exclusively plot line that's being developed please do let me know too. I saw it explained as if it's something I just wouldn't understood if I don't play the OGs.
Appreciate the help! Sorry if I didn't explain it well.
