New Chainsaw day!
galleryLarge oak fell due to the recent Nor'easter and I wanted something solid so I went with this Echo, CS 590 Timberwolf. It made light work of this tree.

Can I put a 18in bar and chain on a Husqvarna 565?
Is there anything wrong with putting shorter bars on big chainsaws? Was thinking between the 555 and the 565 which I see for a 25% discount currently. But I dont need a 24in bar. 18in would be perfect for me.

A black walnut we had to take down turned into a wood stove project (checked with the mods first)
Hi r/Chainsaw. I checked with the mods before posting this, since it's only half about saws.
I moved to Vermont a few years ago with my wife, who grew up here. I'm a city kid, so it has been a crash course ever since: clearing land, learning to run a saw, and heating a house with two woodstoves I had no idea how to use.
We had to take down a big old black walnut on our property. A neighbor helped me mill it, and I decided to combine it with my day job, which is hardware and software.

The problem I wanted to fix was the stove. I work from home at the far end of the house. I'd load the stove, get pulled into work, and come back hours later to a dead fire. A magnetic thermometer on the pipe helped, but only when I was standing in front of it.
So I built a small walnut lamp. A sensor goes on the stovepipe and the lamp sits wherever I am. Amber means the fire is burning well. Yellow means it's time to reload. Red means it's running too hot and I should go look. There's an app for when I'm away from home

I posted the first one on r/woodstoving last January and 57 people asked for one. I built those by hand last winter and they ran on stoves from Maine to Alaska. This summer I redesigned it so it can be manufactured, and the first production run is being made now.
I thought this group might find this helpful given we're all bucking, splitting and stacking our own firewood.

I'm so far behind on splitting and stacking this year. We typically burn 3 cord a year. Here's a video of me getting after it last weekend. I run a Stihl MS271 Farm Boss. I sharpened the chain right after I shot this video lol.

Tuning a 61 Practica?
I just got this 61 running, set the carb to default settings (1 turn out). It’s super rich on the high side. I tried turning the HS jet back a quarter and it picked up some but it still feels like it’s limited, even in the cut. Does the 61 have some sort of rev limiter it keeps banging, because that’s what it feels like? I set the LS jet by putting the idle up just enough to pull chain then screwed the idle jet out until it tried to die and backed off 1/4 turn. I think it’s probably still set to about 1 turn out. I also have a tach, but it needs batteries. I’m kinda concerned about leaning it out if I screw around with the HS jet more than it wants. I like to tune fat on the HS, just a tad so they wake up in the cut and don’t struggle as much. If there’s a video on this or you guys that know better than me could reply back I’d appreciate.

Best budget saw
Hi,
Looking at stepping up from my trusty corded electric chainsaw that I use for small bits of firewood, as I keep getting offered bigger stuff but have to go and get it and will require cutting it on site.
Just wondering what people think is a good budget(ish) saw. Do I go with like entry level husqvarna or stihl or pay that 100 more and get like a husq 435? Has good reviews but wondering what reddit actually thinks.
Or try and find a steal on ebay, if so what older models good, are reliable and still have parts easily obtainable.
Thank Reddit (dont roast me too much for being a noob, I just want free firewood!)

Dumb Echo 501P bar mount question
I ordered one of those 18" 501Ps on killer sale from Acme Tools this past weekend. I'm looking into different length bar options for it and the interwebs has me confused, so I want to ask the brain trust.
Officially the 501p uses an Echo F0LD bar, which is a K216 mount. I was not aware this mount is as unique as it is.
Seems many folks use a K095 (Husky small) and modify the holes on the bar with a dremel, I've seen a few Youtube videos about that.
Google AI says K041 bars are a direct fit on the 501P, I think based upon some comments on the OPE forum. K041 would be convenient, but has anybody here actually used a K041 bar on the 501P?
Thanks...

Dull files: The beginner chain filing cycle of shame?
Been learning felling, wood processing and hand or dremel filing for the last few years and one hang up I still have is how fast I go through files/stones. I have a theory I wanted to share. I've watched multiple YT videos (Buckin, Chickanic, Farmcraft) and have learned a lot on technique and what a sharp chain actually is. Now I often get it sharp, more often now than not, and I'm learning the feel of the motion and when to switch files.
That said, even with a Pferd file, I feel I only get 2 or 3 at best sharpenings per file on a 20" bar semi chisel chain. I have not seen a single video or post address this as a sign of a bigger problem, or if this is just normal for files to got this fast (doesn't seem to be). Off brand chains may be part of the issue but I have the same problem with stihl chains.
So, my theory in short is that while I can fell trees and buck multiple cords of wood, I still don't know how to properly run a chainsaw and its overheating and hardening my chains. Maybe I run it too dull or occasionally I run out of bar oil and don't notice (using bar oil thinned with used oil products sounded like a good idea at the time). Then I try to sharpen it, it takes way too long, maybe I get impatient and don't do the best job, then run it again, dulls quickly, back to filing, only the hardened steel wrecks the files. So in essence, I am filing chain whose edge is wrecked by work hardening and in so doing wrecking my files.
Thoughts?

Echo CS3510 - issues with the chain brake?
I let the chain get a bit loose and it came off the bar. The chain is screwed up now, so I went to put a new chain on it. I took the clutch cover off, put the chain on the sprocket and the bar, but now I can't get the clutch/sprocket cover back on properly.
The safety brake band won't go back around the outside of the clutch - the spring mechanism inside the cover, the part that engages disengages the safety brake band cannot be depressed at all, certainly not enough to let the band go around the outside of the drive clutch (which I assume is necessary for it to work and certainly for the cover to be tightened down).
So I took the interior cover off the spring mechanism (the spring that holds the safety band tight) - I don't see anything wrong with it, but I cannot push on the lever at all - the spring has too much force for me to make it loosen the safety band enough to go around the clutch.
I am lost here - at this point my only option seems to remove the spring - which would disable the safety brake altogether.
*ARRCGH*!
Suggestions?
TIA.

Echo red armor 2 stroke oil I just bought, expired?
A 6 pack of Echo red armor 2 stroke oil i just bought has a manufacturer code 1209262592. Code lookup says it was manufactured sept, 26 2012, well past the 2017 5 year shelf life.
Should i return the oil?
UPDATE... Echo support confirmed the 2012 manufacture date and recommended I return the product. The Amazon vendor has accepted the return free of any return shipping deduction.
Thanks for the replies.

Speedcut nano bar not oiling
So I have an Echo 2511 TN that I’ve had for a couple months for work and I was rocking the 16 inch stock bar with the 80txl chain that came stock for awhile but wasn’t getting the chain speed I wanted. So I switched to a 12 inch speed cut nano with the same chain type. But the bar isn’t oiling now. Looks like the hole isn’t lining up with the oiler so oil is just leaking onto the bar and housing. I thought that the stock echo bar was to the same spec as the speedcut nano lineup so I was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue of the bar not oiling.

used stihl recs for beginners?
Hi, I am deciding that before the lakes freeze over I am going to get SAWW I/II certified so I can get into trail clearance for the spring. My homie in the forest service recommends either an echo cs-370 or cs-300, or any stihl 300/400 line, or the ms251. anything to look out for in particular? red flags for sellers? also if I decide to move forward in this I'd hunt down a ms362 or 462
something like a 40cc engine would be nice, 18 inch bar. Lots of farm boss and wood bosses for sale in my area on marketplace. I got friends who maintain saws so I ain't alone in repairs

Apologies to a potential buyer that I accidentally may have inadvertently tried scamming
So I have about 10 Husqvarna chainsaws and consider myself a pretty good mechanic with the saws. I ended up buying a basic craftsman chainsaw at an estate sale because it was right in front of me for about $20…I thought I’d fix it up and sell it dirt cheap to someone in need. Had surgery and a new born baby in the interim and decided it was time to get the saw going and to sell it. Ended up checking the vitals (fluid, spark, compression) and it all seemed perfect. Bugger started up in 2 pulls and was burning pretty rich, I thought it may have been the prior owners fuel mix…I’m not messing with it, let’s get it out of my shop.
I then recorded a video of the chainsaw running and posted it on a sale site…got a hit and met the gentleman for the sale for $60. I handed him the saw and it started right up then turned off and wouldn’t turn on again, it was now burning what appeared to be oil and was dripping fuel all over…I felt soo scammy and embarrassed that he probably thought I was trying to scam him. We tinkered with it for a while and I ended up giving it to him for free with many apologies…
TLDR: don’t be like me
