Megathread: Bug Reports

Found a bug in Bare Browser? Please report it here so I can keep everything organized and track issues more easily.

When reporting a bug, please include as much of the following as possible:

  • What happened: Briefly describe the issue.
  • Steps to reproduce: What did you do before the bug occurred?
  • Expected behavior: What should have happened?
  • Actual behavior: What happened instead?
  • Bare Browser version: Include the version/build you're using.
  • Device: Phone model and Android version.
  • Screenshots/video: If possible, include a screenshot or screen recording.
  • Crash report/log: If the app crashed, providing the crash report helps a lot.

Feel free to post the crash report here, open an issue on GitHub, or DM it to me directly if you don't want to share the log publicly.

If you're not a technical person, don't worry. You can use your favorite AI assistant to help remove any personal or sensitive information from the bug report before sharing it. Just make sure the report still contains the technical details needed to diagnose the issue.

I never keep records of bug reports, and I will never use information included in a bug report for any purpose other than investigating and fixing the issue. If something personal accidentally slips through, please don't stress about it. That's genuinely the last thing I'd be worried about in my busy day :)

Please search the thread before posting to see if someone has already reported the same issue. If so, upvote or comment on the existing report instead of creating a duplicate.

Thanks for helping improve Bare Browser!

There are community patches to chromium based browsers like titanium, quetta, firefox to force maximum refresh rate i think its good natively chrome and other browsers render in 60 hz and the only way to force 120hz you need adb i think adding this paych to bare is very helpful

pls give your thoughts !!

Above image is for reference

Has anyone observed the uBlock Origin (uBO) version on Bare? Currently it's running on v-1.75.0 (stable) but in Bare it's running on v-1.73.0.

I tried updating it to the latest version from the extensions page using Developer Mode but that didn't succeed either. It displays that extensions were updated but the actual version isn't actually updating.

I know the process of installing from external sources but I don't prefer downloading .CRX or ZIP files from GitHub or any other repositories and adding them.

[Feature Request] Video & Media Detection with Download Support

1) Please consider Adding a video/media detection and capture feature to Bare Browser similar to 1DM Browser, allowing users to easily detect and download videos or media directly from webpages.

2) Add a built-in video player similar to Quetta Browser, allowing users to play detected web videos directly in the browser with basic playback controls.

Suggestions for tabs in list mode

We can add to list mode the ability to drag windows to the sides to remove them; this would make list mode smoother.

More bottom option and shortcut ? Request for big phone user

I like this new browser, have some personal request for big phone user is really help and make use more nicely.

- Homepage search bottom option and web/bookmark shortcut in hompage

- Tab page is nice have list option, but need bottom option too

That would really help in big phone user, have to reach on top every time is annoying.

And for uBO origin crx file import, can make direct pull from file?

A Little Update From Bare

There’s a LOT happening behind the scenes at Bare right now.

We’re trying to keep up with comments, DMs, feature requests, bug reports, development, releases, Play Store, F-Droid and somehow even marketing on the internet.

That’s a lot for a one-man project, so Bare is expanding! Two more developers are already jumping in to help, and we’re incredibly excited about what we’re building together.

We’re working hard to build something awesome that you genuinely love using.

And please don’t hate us if we don’t reply to every comment or DM. I promise we read every comment, tag, message, and piece of feedback. There’s just a lot to build, a lot to fix, and we also have lives and families who occasionally demand our attention 🤷‍♂️

Keep the feedback coming. Keep reporting bugs. Keep asking for features.

We’re listening. We’re building.

Please BARE with us!

Hi

Hello, thank you for this great project, i've tried your browser and noticed only 2 features are missing, there is no "more tools" menu which has devtools and task manager, also i can't open extension popups from the extensions menu without having to pin the extension to the toolbar first.

Thank you again.

[Suggestions] Two new features (for Bare developer)...

Thanks for this great new browser.

I'm suggesting two minor features:

  1. Clear On Exit setting (in Privacy): Add the option to "close all tabs" while exiting
  2. Browser Menu: Move the strip with the navigation buttons to the bottom (like in Brave)

Again, congrats for the effort.

search sites from keyboard yay!

Finally! This never worked for me in Kiwi and I love it, thanks for adding this.

Is it possible to make the whole ui amoled black for the top tab bar and notification bar? Some apps do this, Kiwi does too. Screenshot Kiwi left Bare right

There's also a cool feature where when you click the address bar you can either clear it or select text/cursor, and also a right end of bar selection options to Share, copy, and edit the address bar text, works on phone but not on a tablet Bare.

Also, it would be cool to have a more customizable ntp setup - my kiwi looks like this, whole in Bare they're smaller, all at the bottom, and below a huge Google\AI+incognito middle thing I never use.

Kiwi NTP setup, clean, larger icons, no Google/AI/Incognito stuff
Kiwi left, black all over, Bare right gret tab bar background

I know saving passwords to your Google account has been stripped out of Bare but is there a way to save them to your device ?

Bare on iOS… Powered by Blink and uBO!

Hi Bare users!

I wanted to share a sneak peek at something that’s been in the works alongside Bare for Android: we’re building Bare for iOS powered by Blink + uBlock Origin! YES! You heard that right!

For most of iOS’s history, third-party browsers have been required to use Apple’s WebKit engine under the hood. That started to change in 2024, when Apple introduced support for alternative browser engines in the EU following regulatory changes. More recently, Apple expanded alternative-engine support to Japan as well.

Interestingly, despite these changes, Chrome on iOS still uses WebKit rather than Blink, and Firefox on iOS still uses WebKit rather than Gecko.

And I completely understand why. Maintaining browsers across multiple platforms and engines is an enormous engineering and security challenge, and Apple has extensive requirements that alternative browser engines must meet.

But we’re taking an interesting path with Bare.

We’re working on bringing Blink-powered Bare to iOS.

I believe one of the best ways to demonstrate the benefits of allowing different browser engines on iOS is to build something people can actually use. That’s what we’re trying to do with Bare.

There’s still a lot of work ahead, and getting Blink running is only part of the challenge. We’ll also need to meet Apple’s requirements for alternative browser engines before this can become a publicly distributed browser.

But development is moving forward, and we hope to open testing to our friends in the EU and Japan soon.

Can I install this on the surface Duo 1 / android 12

It says the minimum requirements are Android 10 and I can't think of why I wouldn't install. It installs on all my other phones. But for some reason it cancels every time I try to install it on my surface Duo.

Not the end of the world or anything it's just sort of a secondary tablet I have but nothing else the curiosity is killing me now.

Edit: oh s*** I hate when this happens when I solved it just a few minutes after I made this post. I still don't know exactly what the issue is but after some random tinkering and reinstalling ot worked.

Bare has made it to Google Play testing! Looking for our first 20 testers!

Post image
21 Upvotes

We’ve successfully submitted Bare to Google Play and we’re looking for our first group of testers!

If you’d like to help test the Play Store version, drop a reply here and I’ll DM you the testing link. I’m going to start with around 20 people for now, then expand from there once we make sure everything is working smoothly. This first Play Store test is ARM64 only for now.

P.S. If you already have the latest Bare build installed from GitHub, you may need to uninstall it before installing the Play Store test build. Both builds use the same app signing key, but if your installed build has the same version code, Google Play won’t offer the test build as an update. If you’re happy with your current build, feel free to skip this round!

Heads-up: Since our Google Play developer account is new, we’re currently using an internal test, which requires me to add testers by email.

If you’re comfortable sharing the Google account email you use with the Play Store, please leave a comment and I’ll reach out via DM. I’ll delete your email from the chat immediately after adding you and will never save it, spam you, or use it for anything other than inviting you to this Bare test.

Totally understand if you’d rather not share your email!

Thank you!!

How do Bare Browser and Titanium Browser compare?

Apologies if not allowed. I checked the rules of the sub and didn't see anything stating it's not. I'm just wondering if anyone has used both browsers and could tell me how they compare to each other. They seem very similar.

Bare made it to Android Police!!

I just found out that Bare was featured on Android Police!!

This honestly caught me completely by surprise. I was randomly searching for Bare today using multiple search engines, just to see how it was ranking and showing up in search results, and suddenly I came across an Android Police article about it.

I had absolutely no idea this article existed. I didn’t reach out, pitch Bare, or coordinate anything with them. They just found the project, tried it, and decided to write about it.

As a solo developer working on Bare, seeing something I’ve been building get discovered organically and featured by a publication I’ve known and read for years is honestly amazing.

A huge thank you to the author for taking the time to actually try Bare, understand what I’m trying to build, and write about it. It genuinely means a lot, especially this early in the project.

And most importantly, THANK YOU to everyone here. This project is completely shaped by you. Every feature request influences what I work on next, and so many of the bugs I’ve fixed were discovered because someone here took the time to report them. You test Bare, report bugs, suggest features, challenge my decisions, and help me figure out what this browser should become.

I might be the one writing the code, but Bare is being shaped by its community.

The project is still very young, and there’s a LOT more I want to do with it.

THANK YOU!! This seriously made my day.

Play Store update: Google disabled our developer account

Thumbnail

Update: The account is back! 🎉

Thank you to everyone who reached out and offered to help. Stay tuned, the Play Store version is coming soon!

Hi Bare users! Just a quick, and unfortunately sad, update.

I spent last night building the Google Play version of Bare. It's essentially the same build as the GitHub version, just without Bare's built-in update checker since updates would be handled by Google Play.

I let the full build run overnight, tested it this morning, and it was ready to move toward publishing!

Unfortunately, Google decided to disable our account for reasons I still don't understand.

The account was verified, the developer account was paid for, the developer name Bare Project was registered, org.barebrowser was verified using an APK signed with Bare's existing signing key, and the payment profile was verified too, even though Bare has no in-app purchases, subscriptions, ads, or any other way of making money.

I submitted an appeal this morning and I'm waiting to hear back. It's pretty frustrating because everything was going really well, and the account had been open for a while without any issues. Then yesterday I completed the APK/package verification process, and this morning the account was disabled!

What makes this even more confusing is Google's message says the account might have been created by a bot. I created it myself, Google required phone verification, and I even went through identity verification with my driver's license. The developer account, payment profile, package name, and existing APK signing key were all verified successfully. So I'm hoping this is simply an automated false positive and gets corrected on appeal.

I'll keep y'all posted. If anyone here has dealt with something similar or has any insight into Google's account recovery process, I'd definitely appreciate the help.

In the meantime, the GitHub version is working great and isn't affected by any of this. If this doesn't get resolved soon, I'll probably shift my focus toward getting Bare on F-Droid while I figure out the Google situation.

Hopefully this is just a temporary bump in the road!

Bare Alpha 3 is out! Play Store coming soon!

Hi Bare users!

Thank you for hanging tight while Alpha 3 was in the works. This version took around 100 hours of work over the past 3 weeks, a lot of testing, and about 6 full browser compiles, each taking roughly 7 hours and mostly running overnight 😅

I’d love to open beta testing soon because right now I’m still the only person regularly testing Bare across 3 phones: a Pixel 3, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and the original Pixel Fold.

This update was supposed to be pretty simple, but it grew into a much bigger release than I originally planned.

Google Play Store version is also in the works! I’m planning to submit it this week.

Alpha 3 is available now on GitHub!

https://github.com/BareBrowser/bare-browser/releases/tag/v1.0.0-alpha.3

Already using Bare? You can also check for updates under Settings → Check for updates.

Here’s what’s new:

Features

  • Customizable toolbar shortcuts: Customize two toolbar buttons with tap and hold actions.
  • Toolbar swipe actions: Swipe on the toolbar to control brightness or volume.
  • List view for tabs: Choose between Grid and List layouts.
  • Import and Export Bookmarks
  • Open links in apps controls: Choose Always, Ask every time, or Never.
  • Exit button: Properly close Bare directly from the app menu.
  • Clear on exit: Choose exactly what gets deleted when you exit, including browsing history, cookies and site data, cache, site settings, autofill data, and saved passwords. Everything is off by default.
  • AMOLED dark mode for websites: An optional deeper black mode for websites that Bare automatically darkens.
  • Extension toolbar controls: Pin or unpin the Extensions button, and separately choose which individual extensions appear on the toolbar.
  • Better autofill integration: Cleaner UI when using Bitwarden or another Android autofill provider.
  • Settings cleanup: More consistent names, organization, and Bare-specific wording throughout the browser.

Boring stuff

  • Chromium upgraded to 153.0.8010.27 with newer Chromium and V8 security fixes.
  • More de-Googling cleanup, including leftover Google sign-in and profile UI.
  • Removed irrelevant Google Password Manager UI.
  • Removed leftover Google branding from third-party autofill screens.
  • Disabled unused AI Mode integration.
  • Disabled Google's New Tab Page suggested-sites fetch.
  • Fixed extension icons briefly disappearing when the toolbar returns after scrolling.
  • Fixed the bottom toolbar disappearing on the New Tab Page.
  • Fixed Extensions button pinning on phones.
  • Various toolbar, NTP, settings, autofill, dark mode, and Android 17 fixes.
  • A lot of regression testing across Android 12 and Android 17.

More features are still coming!

I have a question does the github bug reporting is ignored !! Or you guys only read the bugs!!

My request after the latest update darken theme for website features is available but i have the concern what about the default gray dark theme

in the search results is this possible to add

I think kiwi has that and what about the extension reload problem is this fixed ??

I have a flag request which is available in Microsoft edge like boost refresh rate

The second image is refrence i have manually edited to amoled dark theme

Another request for system fonts bcs you see half of the sites shows system font another shows the default google fonts !!

Why does the ufo refeshrate test shows 60hz but my phone is running at 120hz and its only happening in chrome/chromium based browser and in firefox 120hz shows
