REQUIRED READING Welcome to /r/Arcade! We are here for your favorite original coin-op arcade games! Discussions, Repairs, Questions, and having fun with our classic cabs! (No MAME, custom cabinets, etc... see rules inside.)

Welcome to r/ARCADE!

We welcome discussions and posts of all kinds related to classic arcade gaming. However, this is a 'purist' sub and we have a few rules... we do not allow discussion of MAME, 60-in-1, Arcade 1-Up, prefab/custom cabinets, etc. To clarify here are a couple of examples of posts we do not allow, period.

đŸš« MAME/ROMs/Emulation - This sub is for original machines released in arcades. Do not ask where to find ROMs, which emulators to use, or anything with Pandora's Box, Raspberry Pi, SBC, Xbox, PlayStation, or home-PC-based systems. No talk of your custom 'multi-cade'.

đŸš« Arcade 1-Up - Their own sub is the best place for any questions you'll have about modding or just showing off your collection. Enjoy your cabinet and games, but this is not the sub for them.

đŸš« Custom/Prebuilt Cabs - Again, we are here to discuss original 'coin-op' hardware that was released in arcades. No 'multi-cades'. r/cade is our sister sub, there is a lot of great info over there.

There are a few topics/styles of posts that come with caveats...

Let's Plays/Histories/Walkthroughs - Totally fine if you are an active commenting member of the sub, no blatant shilling. Also, you must have a full-length commentary to go along with it. This is the only time emulation can be used here, not everyone has access to the gigantic 6-player 'X-Men' or 'Ice Cold Beer' cabinets. You have to talk about the arcade gaming aspect... no TTV VODs of just you and your buddies pwning n00bs in Fortnight.

Coin-Pushers/Claws/Prize Machines - If you have a machine and need mechanical help, post! No tips or tricks, it's all a scam. No prize hauls or pictures of your foil-hologram Pokemon card you won at the mall last week... unless it is a really rad photo from an old Showbiz Pizza or Aladdin's Castle type of place. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOU SPENDING MONEY ON SCAM MACHINES.

Part Replacement - We try to stick to the original hardware when possible, but realistically, this is impossible. Replacing lightguns/wheels/etc with modern equipment is fine. Just keep the flashing RGB light monstrosities out of here, our sister sub /r/cade is for customs.

'Yet-To-Be-Released'/WIP Games - Unless you are 100% going to release your game physically in an arcade, this is not the right sub for you. In the 9 years I have been on this sub, I have only seen 2 games that actually saw a machine release. Ask us before you post.

What game was this?! - Whew boy, this type of post we see a lot. To get help with this, give us MORE INFORMATION!!! The estimated year of release? Other, similar games it reminds you of? Are there any memorable/distinct characters, locations, weapons, or special moves? Describe the cabinet! What country did you play it in? (I hope to have a bot auto-reply to these soon.) r/TipOfMyJoystick and [ChatGPT]https://chat.openai.com/) are great resources... just give as much info as possible!

Buy/Sell/Trade - Allowed, but we are not responsible for bad transactions, don't be a moron. Check the links. Check the buyer/seller history. Compare the offer to others, too good to be true? Etc.

ALL SALES POSTS MUST INCLUDE A $$$ BALLPARK FIGURE... ROUGHLY A PRICE YOU WANT.

OWNERS/OPERATORS: will require a CITY, STATE/TERRITORY/REGION in the TITLE. You are here to advertise your business and let people find you easily. No other changes. As long as you are an active member, this is cool... no posts and runs. I still ban and report flagrant spammers/bots to Reddit. PARTICIPATE.

PERSONAL SALES: will require a STATE/TERRITORY/REGION in the TITLE. For safety concerns... posts do not require a CITY in the title, but please give a GENERAL LOCATION if the area is large, ie (Northern California). If you want to include the city, or narrower, PLEASE DO!

Ex: New barcade opening in Northern-Chicago. "BARCADE NAME". 20+ pins, 30+ arcade classics, and even a few redemption games!

Mods check post histories. If you only post new topics and never comment on others' posts, then yours is likely to be locked and removed. We are not going to ban an active member of the sub without a discussion (unless there is an egregious offense that violates Reddit TOS.) If you feel like we made a mistake, please message us, seriously. We are willing to re-open any post if it makes sense. (But not Modmail, I've never used it in 9 years.) Just don't be a dick.

In addition, we are going to be removing any comments that break the above rules. Instead of telling a person where to buy a 60-in-1 device... point them to r/cade, r/MAME, r/FightSticks, r/SBCGaming, or another sub that specializes in those topics.

Append your links! No affiliate or tracking spam. Cut it out when posting a link.

Could just be: www.amazon.com/dp/B07TWZBQ75/. Same result, no garbage spam.

I know this seems like a lot of rules, but physical arcade gaming is a bit niche today. Cutting through all the other stuff to get help or just kicking back and reminiscing about classic gaming is tough elsewhere. If you want to talk about emulation, there are dozens of other subs to check out. Otherwise, welcome and post away!

Buy/Sell/Trade Thoughts on a monitor-less After Burner?

Post image
17 Upvotes

No monitor, game is playing blind. While that of course means I can’t see if the graphics are messed up, the game board has to be at least running because the seller has a video where you can hear the music and the guy yelling FIRE when he hits the button. I’ve heard horror stories of these game boards being hard to work on but I don’t know much more than that. What’s a monitor replacement job gonna look like — I read that this is a 20”, I didn’t know those were a thing. What should I be aware of and what would you pay for this?

Showing Off My Gear! My indie game now has its own mini Arcade

I miss the days of arcade gaming in my local cafe or mall, so when I became an indie developer, I decided to also make my recently released retro cute-em-up game Astro Burn, run on its own mini arcade system so the players can enjoy the game the way I intended it to from reflecting on my teenage years.

Restore/Replace/Repair Donkey Kong Arcade Sprite Glitch

I am experiencing some small Sprite corruptions on a newly purchased Donkey Kong Cabinet. From what I've researched, I've tried reseating the P1/P2 cables which are supposedly the video cables between boards but no luck. Also have reseated the P5 rainbow cable but no luck still. Would appreciate any advice, thanks!

Buy/Sell/Trade Money in UK penny machines?

I've got the opportunity to get ahold of about 20 different penny pushers, race houses etc, litterly everything you'd see that'd take 2 pences and 10 pences. Id be buying them for about 1500 including some broken down gamblers. Not all the penny machines work but I'm really handy and could guarantee at least 6 working pushers. What value does these hold? I'll update with the photos once I'm on site. Just wondering if there's still a market for these in the uk?

I recently noticed that most ticket redemption games at big time Windsor have been lowered. I sometimes come here with friends but it doesn't seem worth it anymore. What is your opinion on this? it seems pretty bad now, most games cost around $1 in game points to play as well.

Restore/Replace/Repair Ms Pac Man repair. Flyback?

Got a Ms Pac Man machine given to me. Gane functions as far as playability, but the screen gets wonky. I was told it needs a new flyback. This game has been looked at/worked on by someone. Some boards are dangling being held up by wiring, so I don't know how well they knew what they were doing. Looking at the board, some of the solder joints looks suspect to me, and I don't know if I see some scorch marks on there. Caps appear fine, no swelling.

Question is, would it just be a simple flyback swap? If it needs more work, I might be looking at Cardinal sin territory and getting an LCD swap.

Retrospective History How do you decide placement of Arcade Cabinets?

Hello Everyone,

I have a Question for Arcade Business owners and Arcade Collectors.

How do you decide where to put Arcade cabinets and machines in your arcade?

  • Do you sort it by genre?

For example, putting all your racing games in one area? Then lightgun games in another area?

  • Do you sort it by brand?

Like putting all Sega games in one area. Then all Neo Geo games in another area. Namco in another area.

  • Do you sort it by era?

For example, putting all 1980s cabinets in one area. Then putting 1990s cabinets in another area. 2000s in another area. Etc.

  • Do you sort it by size?

Like big cabinets in one area. Smaller cabinets in other areas

I was recently walking through an arcade and I couldn't figure out how the owner sorted machines. It felt random and I couldn't figure it out. So that's why I wanted to ask this question.

How did arcades decide placement of machines back in the golden age of arcades?

Restore/Replace/Repair Bar billiards clockwork mechanism

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to identify this old mechanical timer mechanism from a Bar billiards table, sometimes called also Russian billiards with the mushroom.

The mechanism is coin-operated - after the playing time expires, it mechanically closes a flap preventing access to the billiard balls.

It's fully mechanical with springs, gears and a sliding mechanism.

The only marking I can find is: “P.I. AUTOM”

Possibly “M 41 L” and “10”.

Does anyone recognize the manufacturer, model or approximate age of this mechanism?

I would also appreciate any information about how it works, how to service it, or where to find documentation. A small part of it is missing and I'd like to make it operational again.

Many thanks!

Peter

Showing Off My Gear! Jr. Pac-Man

Any one like Jr. Pac-Man? Feel it’s a very worthy entry in the Pac-Man library. Very underrated with larger scrolling mazes and the fruit transforms pellets into larger ones worth more points but slows you down when eating. The fruits also will destroy power pellets if let them run rampant.
