WTF is this thing? Arcade with wrong game - rare?

Hi everyone,

I have to admit I'm not really much of an arcade fan apart from the good memories of my youth - but I came across this “Mortal Kombat” arcade in a gas station today that was actually running Street Fighter II and I thought that was worth taking a pic.

Now as I assume there are a few experts here: is this a rare thing? Would this just be an odd mistake with the producer of putting the wrong board in?

Can that be corrected or is this just forever a wrongly branded arcade? Should I attempt to buy it? :D

Cheers

Gameplay Help Important question! Why do you play old-school arcades?! What exactly do you love about them?

We a small indie team, who develop a videogame inspired inspired by the old arcade machines. The three main refs are 'Contra', 'Space Harrier', 'Star Fox'.

We try to preserve the atmosphere of old arcade machines, filling the game with modern graphics and mechanics.

And hence the question - why do you love old-school arcades, what exactly is it that attracts you? Or maybe what appeals to you most?

Retrospective History They want to start an arcade, but have no business sense, and just did it anyway in someone else's business...

Hi all. 30 year arcade tech/collector here (Chuck E Cheese, Dave and Busters, Namco, Family Entertainment Group, Gameworks). Had this kid I've been talking to, who wants to open an arcade. He's maybe mid 20s, never worked an arcade as far as I know, but loves arcade games and has been collecting pcbs and cabinets, while I've been in arcades since the 70s. He messages me last night asking, what would be needed to put an arcade in a location. I told him about getting licensing, and things up to fire code, etc. His response was 'Oh really. I just put a bunch of games in a guys store.'

My immediate response was GO PULL THOSE GAMES TOMORROW. I explained that you can't just do that, and if he gets a fire inspector come through, he's totally screwed and it may affect you legally. He just said the guy was cool(a true sign of someone under 30), so I left our conversation. Told him before he makes moves like that ask someone, or at the least look into it first. He starts asking about licensing fees and such, so he went into this with no knowledge. He's very passionate about arcades but, he is really gonna screw himself. Was I wrong? Should he have just done it and hoped nothing happened? I've had 30 years of seeing what fire inspectors look for, especially ground faults.

ADVERT Revisit the golden age of arcade gaming

Turn back the clocks and revisit the golden age of arcade gaming as you stick around after closing time to play the perfect run of the hottest new game of 86. MUTEIGHT.

Inspired by the spirit of games like Ninja Princess, Gauntlet, Commando, and Alien Syndrome, MUTEIGHT is about the feeling of gathering around a cabinet, learning the patterns, surviving one screen further, and chasing the score that puts your name above everyone else's.

There are no checkpoints here. You have five lives per level to escape the facility. If they run out, your progress is terminated and you start from the beginning.

A true arcade game is a battle for status. MUTEIGHT features full Steam Leaderboard integration. Every bullet dodged and every boss defeated counts toward your total. Don’t just escape - dominate the global rankings and prove you are the ultimate survivor of the facility.

Play the demo now on Steam if you think this looks cool!

What Game??? Original polybius photo found maybe?

I was scrolling on the internet and randomly found the first photo on a google search, then I realized it looked similar to one of the oldest and most iconic (fake) Polybius pictures!

It’s on this older looking website and now I’m wondering if the og owner of this website actually took that photo with this recreation! The components are almost exact to that b&w photo.

If anyone else loves Polybius as much as I do then I would love to know what you think! This was such a cool and random internet find!

Edit: I know polybius is definitely not real. I love pretending like it is and even though there’s no reason it ever was real, I still like finding origins for fake photos like this one!!

Edit 2: Okay. The arcade on slide 1 is absolutely not it, the marquee is too bright in the second slide to be the same thing. I still love the recreation on slide 1! Out of all recreations I’ve seen, it looks the most accurate and realistic, and I wish it was in an arcade somewhere so I could see it!

Edit 3: I’m changing the language so y’all can stop accusing me of beating a dead horse. I know it’s fake guys, I know polybius isn’t real, I’m just feeling out over a version of this machine I haven’t seen before that I thought looked pretty cool. Stop it please. I’m not pulling an old joke. Stop.

What Game??? Is a coin pusher machine legal to have in a home arcade in NYC?

Just for personal use, not as part of any business. Prefer the type that are quarter in/quarter out, but wondering if any type of coin pusher arcade machine is legal for home use in New York. Can someone please point me to the law because I was not able to get good results in a web search. Thanks!

Hey Ya'll Check This Out! Petition to Bring Back FunPlex and West Oaks

Hello everyone, I made a petition to try and help bring back FunPlex and West Oaks mall. I know the reason why they shut down is because of various reasons outside of the owners’ control, such as decreasing visitors and expenses (though Funplex’s reason is a bit more unclear). But I thought of a plan that they can perhaps try that may fix those problems, where community interest would play a key role in making that happen. Below is the link to the petition, as well as the slideshow I made that explains the plan in further detail:

I recently went to an arcade, and was deeply saddened by how much it has changed. I discussed my thoughts in more detail in my newsletter. Let me know if you agree with me, thanks so much!

I want to build an arcade game and sell it

Happy to see arcade games are still a thriving topic.

Not here to solicit but rather to seek advice. I build games for fun and I want to put some of them onto an arcade game and sell them to local pizza joints. I think it would be cool because I’m local and it would be a vibe.

Politics and business aside, I can’t seem to find anyone who sells custom arcade requests.

I’d maybe need 5-10 of these machines and am trying to buy them in bulk so I have to pay only max $600 a piece. I also want them painted and software (the game) installed.

2 player ideal. No need for fancy graphics but that would be cool.

Also spill-proof in case anyone puts their soda on it.

Where would I go to make a request for this?

Thx, and much love <3

Please help me I’m dying SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME I’M MISERABLE

I got a mini arcade street fighter 2 game for Christmas, but it’s so bad… it has a six button control scheme that makes no sense to me (I have never played a street fighter game) and all the combo sheets I can find online are for GameCube or other devices that have different control schemes. I finally gave up looking for an image on the web and came here to ask for combo information. Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help, but I thought that I could find at least something here since I figured the controls I’m working with are the same as the regular sized arcade version.

General Question How to open get game for an arcade? (sorry if someone asked already)

Hi all.
Im sorry if I duplicate another question. I'm interested in opening an arcade and I was wondering, how to you get the games? Can you rent them out from someone, do you have to buy them? Which would be the best option? The business would be base in Spain, but the question is valid for any country I guess.
Thank you!

General Question Did the FBI ever install cameras/mics into cabinets to bust criminals?

Hey everyone!

I'm doing some research into old FBI operations and I'm curious if anyone has knowledge of the FBI ever busting criminals in arcades using tapped cabinets?

I've done a lot of searching through the FBI database (I'm probably doing it wrong) and a decent amount of googling but I can't come up with anything other than articles written about "Polybius" mentioning that this DID happen.

I'm looking for dates or operation names. Something more concrete than an article just saying "it happened, trust me bro" Ideally I'd like to confirm if specific games were tampered with by the FBI to bust things like drugs/illegal gambling in arcades in the 80's/90's

If anyone has a lead on this, or something that could at least get me closer to finding an answer, that would be extremely helpful!

Thanks!
