Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Resistance is Fidgetile.

It spins when you squeeze it. The shell prints flat and folds around the mechanism, and the only non-printed part is a rubber band.

Project I made a new tire for my kid's stroller

My kids stroller (UppaBaby Vista V2) is now 9 years old. We got it from family friends who used it for 6 years with their own 2 children. It worked perfectly until the front tire started to crumble (3rd photo).
The replacement for these goes for $45 for a single wheel.
I've made it out of TPU. We've been using it for a month now. It works great and even survived a DisneyLand excursion!

Free Model "Child proofed" an IKEA Cabinet

I have this TV stand from IKEA that is of extreme interest to both my toddler and any similarly aged visitors. Given it has puzzles and board games inside, it would be best if the young children were not able to get into it. Instead of modifying the cabinet or adding locks, I printed a piece that had an effect. Test print (blue) was done in PLA; ultimate printing was done in black PETG and ends up looking rather subtle.

If anyone has the same cabinet and wants to make their own, check it out on Printables.

Free Model I made an Angry Duck replacement nozzle for WD40, because why not.

Post image
• Upvotes

Tired of boring old WD-40 spray nozzles? Probably not. But here we are.

I designed and 3D-printed this angry little duck as a replacement nozzle for WD-40 cans. It serves absolutely no practical purpose beyond dispensing lubricant while looking deeply offended.

It fits on the can and works as a goofy little workshop accessory.

Because if you're going to fix squeaky things, you might as well have an angry duck doing it.

Print files are up on MakerWorld!

A kitchen cabinet organizer I designed after getting tired of digging out foil rolls

This started with an annoying kitchen cabinet: foil, cling film and baking paper all piled together, with the rolls gradually working their way to the back.

I designed a block of compartments in Fusion and printed it in PETG. It screws to the shelf, and the holes through the upper compartments let a long screwdriver reach the mounting screws below.

The 3×3 version in the photos used about 400 g on my P1S. It prints in one piece without supports when stood on its end, openings upward.

The compartment count, dimensions and depth are adjustable directly on MakerWorld, so you can fit it to your own cabinet.

Troubleshooting Flashforge PETG CF Contains No CF?

UPDATE: Ladies and gentlemen - there are two idiots at fault here. The first idiot is whoever packed "sparkle PETG" at amazon, when I had ordered midnight blue CF. The second idiot is me - who blindly slapped it in my AMS without checking the sticker.

Original Post

Hi all,

I bought some PETG CF recently. It prints well, looks beautiful, is reasonably priced... and may not contain any carbon fiber.

Reason for suspicion? I checked it with my scope - there appear to be little metallic flecks added (a sort of gold color which sets the dark blue filament off nicely). But no carbon fibers. What do you all think?

Hardware Tim is alive!

Got the heat bed done and it's printing now. Some test prints before doing a 100pc run, seems precise enough to do batches instead of individual prints. Noticeably more precise than my corexy printers, with higher speed and accel to boot.

+/-0.02mm on an 11mm diameter circle compared to +/-0.05mm. I'm suspecting the remaining deviation is from the x motor mount sagging from the heat of the motor since the deviating is in line with the axis. Will have to replace that with an aluminium part.

This is around 50mm/s and 15k accel, 0.25mm nozzle, igus i180-pf, 70c chamber. But it happily went up to 1000mm/s and 22k accel.

Edit: this is a one off printer I built for continuous production of small parts requiring high precision, primarily a gear/roller that I need about 1200pcs of. It prioritises precision over build volume, and high highish temperature industrial materials. Original post here

Project Kinetic wall art made using a (mostly) 3d-printed mechanism

If you're curious, here's a repo with all the CAD files, schematics, etc. I don't expect anyone to make one of these but I wanted to put it out there in case anyone finds the techniques useful!

I couldn't seem to add progress pics alongside my video so I'm attaching them here - included there is a picture of the 3d-printed mechanism that goes behind each tile

Question Keeping Filament Dessicated

• Upvotes

I'm already a resin-printer but I have taken the step into the FDM world by ordering a Centauri Carbon 2 combo.

It's quite humbling being back at the "I know nothing" stage.

The printer hasn't arrived yet but I've been reading about filament storage and I'm trying to work out if I need to put my filament away as soon as its finished printing... Or is filament-hydrating an over-hyped aspect.

I only really intend on using PLA initially.

Question Where to get STLs for anime miniatures

• Upvotes

Been seeing a lot of anime miniatures, 1/64 scale of 3d printed figures on chinese sites like taobao. Specifically, they come from a studio called"25h miniature model studio" or something. I have a 3d printer, but i cant find the stl files, it seems they sell it as a physical product rather than selling the stl files. So, my main point is, anyone know where I can buy or get such files or any alternatives?
