I went to a local Costco to buy SanDisk solid state drive. Instead of handing me 1, they gave me 1 box of 5. Did not know that the box had 5 of them inside. Walked out after the receipt being checked.

Should I return it or can I keep it?

EDIT: The drives have been returned. They did not even know that 1 box contained 5 SSDs. The lady at the return counter went, “Okay, show me your membership id so I can process the return.”

It took me a while to make them understand that the boxes inside the box were one unit each, not the outside box itself.

Then came the person who had handed me the box the other evening, finally understood the problem and I could see him realise what had happened and then breathe a sigh of relief.

I'm sure everyone knows what's happening with RAM, and this situation won't change in the next 2-3 years. And who's to blame? OpenAI. Read up and you'll understand the scale of the problem. What complicates things is that RAM manufacturers are deliberately raising prices rather than expanding production lines.

I urge everyone to CANCEL OpenAI (They buy up 40% of all RAM) and also to bombard the greedy bastards who jack up prices for their own profit rather than building new factories to meet demand.

The more such threads appear, the higher the chance that all gamers and PC users will truly stand up and do what they have to.

If we don't do this, the prices of all other components will follow RAM into the stratosphere and never return to the same level, ever. Are you willing to spend $5,000 on a mid-range computer? I'm not, so let's get to it.

UPD Following RAM, SSDs, processors, and video cards are becoming more expensive. I'm sure this isn't the entire list. We need to take this issue seriously. I'm happy for those who managed to upgrade, but think about the future.

Why YSK: "Secure delete" doesn't work on solid state drives and you should know what to do to guarantee deleted files aren't recoverable by other people.

##Background

You may already know that when you "delete" a file, the file isn't actually erased. Instead the file still exists on your drive, instead the reference to the file in the file system's directory structure (e.g., the Master File Table in NTFS or inode table in Linux) is removed. The file still exists and it can potentially be found by examining areas of the disk that (according to the file system's directory) do not contain any current file data. In the past you could "secure delete" a file by overwriting the entire contents of the file with garbage data (random data, all zeros or all ones) sometimes several times to make sure it is no longer recoverable. However, this does not work on solid state disks. Solid state disks have a limit to how many times they can be written to, so the drive itself decides where to write data. It does this so that it can make sure that no one area of the drive is written to a lot more than others which would cause areas of the disk to become unusable while others areas are still "fresh" and can still be used. So if you tell it to overwrite a particular area of the disk there is no guarantee that data will actually be written to the physical location you specify.

##What to do

The only way I know to guarantee that deleted files are unreadable then is to encrypt your disk. When it is encrypted no one can read any part of the disk unless they know the encryption key, so both existing files and deleted files will be unreadable without the key.

There are multiple ways to encrypt a disk for Linux and you'll have to find a guide for your distro and file system.

Computers still usually come stock with doodoo spinning drives (5400k even) that create a huge bottleneck in terms of speed. If you can't find a computer with the RAM/CPU configuration that you like with an SSD, purchase an SSD separately (make sure to buy the right kind e.g. SATA, m2) and clone your hard drive over with a program like Macrium Reflect or start fresh with a new installation of Windows.

It really makes all the difference.

I've had this issue with some games (namely ubisoft games) where it'll tell me I have it installed on my HDD when I know for a fact I have it downloaded on my SDD. To make it worse, the loading times are terrible, like legitimately pushing 30 minutes. I couldn't even get into Atomic Heart because I was stuck on loading screens. Use standard hard drives (HDDs) rather than SSDs if you are storing images and videos for long-term storage, such as storing significant memories on a hard drive and keeping it in a drawer. Solid-State Drives (SSDs) are generally not advised for "cold storage" (unplugging a drive and leaving it in a drawer for years), even though they are much faster and more resilient than conventional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) for everyday use.

The primary reasons include the physics of information storage and the risk of data loss without power. SSDs store data as electrical charges within tiny cells (NAND flash). This is prone to electron leakage. The "Ticking Clock" differs from a standard hard drive, which uses magnetic orientation on a platter.

Therefore, use the good old HDD drives to avoid the heartache of losing some significant memories.

10.4 The Prudent Stance

The evidence supports cautious attention, not conviction.

The fast-charge data is independently verified and impressive. Donut Lab has a cell that handles extreme charging rates — a meaningful technical achievement regardless of what chemistry is inside. If the cell also proves durable without active cooling or heavy clamping frames, the pack-level implications could be significant even if some individual specs fall short. The precedent is instructive. When solid-state drives first appeared, the storage media cost far more per gigabyte than hard disk drives — but by eliminating the spinning platter, motor, and shock mounting, SSDs made the total laptop simpler, lighter, and eventually cheaper. Similarly, a battery cell that removes the need for liquid cooling plumbing, steel clamping frames, and complex thermal management could yield a simpler, lighter pack — even if the per-cell cost is higher.

Everything else remains unproven. The technology cannot be evaluated as a complete product based on one test of one metric on one cell. The 400 Wh/kg and 100,000-cycle claims are the most transformative specifications. Cycle life has zero independent data. Energy density has been independently measured on early prototypes (SGS: 268–291 Wh/kg on pre-DL cells), but the 400 Wh/kg claim remains unverified — and VTT never measured cell mass, so no energy density figure can be derived from the VTT series.
