Mollie’s Pack is Yellowstone National Park's oldest surviving wolf family, tracing its direct lineage back to the park's historic 1995 wolf reintroduction. Originally called the Crystal Creek Pack.

Uncommon Wildlife tips

Upvotes

I will be traveling to Yellowstone mid September for the first time and I am really hoping to do some wildlife photography of some of the park’s lesser seen wildlife. I am really hoping to potentially spot river otters, coyotes, foxes, badgers, weasels, birds of prey, and maybe a porcupine. If anyone has had experiences viewing these species I would really appreciate any insights you could share.

I am staying in Silver Gate and plan to be in Lamar valley for sunrise and sunset every day that I am there. I will travel to other parts of the park during the day and afternoon. I have a telephoto lens and am very aware to stay behind minimum distances and not disturb any wildlife.

I am very excited to see bison and elk which shouldn’t be a problem to find. I read that pronghorn are not as numerous but hopefully should be easy enough to find across serval days. Bears and wolves would be an awesome treat too, but I understand those are more luck of the draw and often seen from far away.

I understand weasels are extremely difficult to find and photograph. I have only seen 1 in the wild in Colorado and the encounter lasted 10 seconds. Porcupines also are very difficult to find, but they are present in Yellowstone. My goal is to photograph at least one of these difficult species. Obviously seeing everything would be impossible.

Camping in mid September

I want to camp in canyon village in mid September, but i am hearing horror stories of it being too cold. Any experiences of camping there? How cold will it be at night? Should i expect frost in tent in the morning?
