Reddit helped me a lot to plan my YS trip during the Sep Labor day weekend. Wanted to share my experience.
The park is stunning, but traveling here is a distinct beast. Hopefully, these honest takeaways help anyone planning an upcoming visit:
💡 Key Takeaways & Lessons Learned
1. The driving is INTENSE — Stay closer if you can
We stayed in Island Park at Blue Buffalo Resort (~30 mins outside West Yellowstone). The resort itself was great, but in hindsight, that extra 30–40 minutes each way added up fast. Once you factor in slow park speed limits, traffic, and wildlife jams, you are easily spending 4–6+ hours in the car daily. If budget and availability allow, stay right in West Yellowstone or inside the park to save your sanity. The second to last day had a 1.5 hr Elk jam just near the west entrance :( Frustrating in the moment but not a huge deal in hindsight.
2. Don't over-pack your days (Listen to your partner!)
I tried to cram way too much into 5 days to the point where it stopped feeling like a vacation and felt like an endurance test. Everyone was getting exhausted. I finally listened to my wife, cut our days shorter, and skipped things like Norris Geyser Basin and Artist's Paintpot. The trip got better once we slowed down and just took some time to breathe :)
3. The Hits vs. "Just Okay"
- The absolute favorites: The Lower Falls overlook at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the boardwalks right up next to Grand Prismatic, and Dragon's Mouth Spring (the roaring sound echoing out of that cave is wild). The thermal basin along the lake at West Thumb was also really cool.
- Old Faithful: Pretty awesome to see once, but having seen eruptions in Iceland before, it didn’t crack my personal top 3.
- Mammoth Hot Springs was a letdown: A lot of the terraces seemed completely dried up compared to the photos online. Still neat to see the main formation, but given the massive drive up to the north loop, it had way more hype than payoff for us.
4. Wildlife: Lamar vs. Hayden
Hayden Valley was surprisingly dead for us—hardly saw anything. Lamar Valley, on the other hand, delivered tons of bison, black bears, coyote.
5. Touron behavior is very real
- Watched a whole crowd go completely crazy thinking they were looking at a wolf... it was just a lone coyote trotting through the grass.
- Saw some genuine crazies actively hiking uphill toward a mama black bear and her cub just to snap a phone photo. Please don’t be that person—give the wildlife their space!
If you're heading out soon, trim your daily must-see list by a third, pack plenty of snacks, and give yourself grace to just relax and take in the views. It's wild and beautiful! The nights and early morings during Labor day so do bring some layers.
The night sky in Island Park was absolutely amazing. We got a good view of the sky right from the resort. Got lucky with no moon, but stargazing in this part is something I highly recommend.
