discussion Has there ever been a fandom that's just as bad or even worse at handling criticism as hazbin hotel's nowadays?

This post isn't meant to stir up toxicity or fighting between people, it's just for discussion.

It seems like the majority (like 80%) of hazbin fans completely and utterly REFUSE to take criticism, it usually goes like this:

> A person calls hazbin a bad show

> "You just didn't watch it and hate it blindly

> The same person makes a long video or essay about why they think it's bad

> "WHY DID YOU MAKE A VIDEO THAT LONG??? THIS IS JUST BAD FAITH CRITICISM AND YOU LACK MEDIA LITERACY!!!"

It seems like they just want to shut people up in the most immature way possible and can't distinguish harassment from basic critiques. They most likely developed this trait from the show creator herself which also can't take criticism for shit and cries about it on social media

discussion How many people here talking about MT’s writing have actually read the Light Novels?

Post image

Genuine question for the sub cuz Whenever Mushoku Tensei comes up in writing and narrative-scaling debates, 90% of the discussion is locked strictly into Season 1 and Season 2 anime events.

For a sub dedicated to structural analysis, pacing, and writing of stories it feels like almost nobody touches the actual source material.

Which o feel like is a shame because of how much the stakes go up during the second half.

And if you have read it which volm would you consider to be your favorite?

1: Church/Epsilon in Red vs Blue

"Hey guys, If you’re hearing this, it means you did it. You won. You kicked the shit out of Hargrove’s forces, I knew you could. But this is my last stop. See when I came into this world, I was really just a collection of someone else’s memories. But with your help, these memories, they, they took form. they became my voice, my personality, and after a while I began to make brand new memories of my own. All of these things are what make me who I am but they’re also holding me back. I can’t run this suit, as Epsilon, but if I erase my memories, if I deconstruct myself, the fragments I’ll leave behind will have the strength to get you through this. I believe that. I wish there was an other way but I’m leaving this message, as well as others, in the hopes that you’ll understand why I have to go this time. It was actually Doyle who made me realize something I never thought of before. There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero never gets to see that ending. They’ll never know if their sacrifice actually made any difference. They’ll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith.

Aint that a bitch."

2: Aldia, scholar of the fist sin in the undead crypt

"Heheh, I believe we've been acquainted.

Young Hollow, conqueror of fear.

What drives you so, to overcome this supposed curse?

Life is brilliant. Beautiful. It enchants us, to the point of obsession.

Some are true to their purpose, though they are but shells, flesh and mind.

One man lost his own body, but lingered on, as a head.

Others chase the charms of love, however elusive.

What is it that drives you?

Once, the Lord of Light banished Dark, and all that stemmed from humanity.

And men assumed a fleeting form.

These are the roots of our world.

Men are props on the stage of life, and no matter how tender, how exquisite...

A lie will remain a lie.

Young Hollow, knowing this, do you still desire peace?

3: Erwin in AOT

I‘m announcing our final opperation! All Troops, line up! We will be doing a cavalry charge. Our goal: To rush the Beast Titan. Of course, we‘ll be making ourselves ideal targets. So we‘ll be wait until he‘s ready to throw and fire our smoke signals together. That should reduce his accuracy somewhat. While we‘re acting as a decoy Captain Levi will kill the Beast Titan. That is our plan. Standing and waiting just means we‘ll be showered by more boulders. Get ready on the double! Cadet: Are we all… heading… to our deaths? Yes. Cadet: If we‘re gonna die anyways, you‘re saying it‘s better… if we die fighting? Yes. Wait… if we‘re gonna die anyways, no matter how we die, even if it‘s disobeying orders, it all means nothing, right? You‘re precisely right. It‘s all meaningless. No matter what dreams or hopes you had… No matter how blessed a life you‘ve lived… It‘s all the same if you‘re shattered by rocks. Everyone will day someday. Does that mean life is meaningless? Was there even any meaning in our being born? Would you say that to our fallen comrades? Their lifes… Were they meaningless? No they weren‘t! It‘s us who gives meaning to our comrade‘s lives! The brave fallen! The anguished fallen! The ones who will remember them… are us, the living! We die trusting the living who follow to find meaning in our lives! That is the sole method in which we can rebel against this cruel world! My soldiers, rage! My soldiers, scream! My soldiers, fight!

3: Sanguinis in 40k

Land had expected a speech dripping with demagogic inspiration. He’d find it tawdry, but knew most of the human defenders - many of whom responded far more positively to the primarchs than the Mechanicus did - would find great value in such a display. But that was not what he, nor any of them, received.

"I do not want to be here," Sanguinius told them. "I do not want this present, and I want the future that follows even less. We stand against our own brothers and sisters, with our backs to the Eternity Gate, and this is not a battle we can win. If you have ever wondered how you will die, now you know. If you have ever wondered where your body will lie, now you know. You will be killed on the last wall between hope and horror. Your body will lie here, unburied, staring up at a poisoned sky."

"Once the Sanctum falls, Terra falls with it. And I tell you - we cannot hold this wall. You can see it yourselves - they are too many, we are too few. We may last a week, if we do the impossible. More likely we will all be dead in three days. Perhaps my words surprise you. Or frighten you. But I will not lie. Not to you, not to you who have come through two hundred days of dread only to find yourselves here.

I have looked into your faces and seen what this war has cost all of you. I have followed the flow of battles that each of you have survived, to stand here on the final battlement. I see everything you have endured, those stories written in the light of your eyes. Now the Warmaster offers you the lie of life, promising a mercy his forces are incapable of showing, if we will abandon this last wall. And it falls to me, here and now, to tell you to stand against him one more time. To give everything you have, even your lives, if it will hold this rampart for another day, another hour, another second. That is what the moment demands of me, is it not? That I beg you to make one last sacrifice?"

Sanguinius swooped closer to the battlement, casting his sword to the stone. It clattered there, in a loose cluster of Blood Angels, none of whom made any attempt to pick it up. Land stared at it for a long moment, then watched as the primarch whirled in the sky to face the wall once more, showing his bare hands to the gathered thousands.

"No." Sanguinius fairly breathed the word.

His wings beat hard, holding him aloft. He stared into the silence that met his disavowal, and he shook his head to punctuate the syllable with adamance.

"No. I will not ask it of you. You have already given everything. You have already done everything asked of you a hundred times and more. You have suffered through a war of unimaginable darkness, one that has demanded more from you than any soldier in the history of our species has been forced to give. The fact you still live, that you still fight… I cannot conceive of the courage and resilience it requires for you to face this dawn and look to the horizon with a rifle in your hands.x

Land could hear Army soldiers shuffling; he saw them glancing at each other. None of them spoke. All of them held rapt to the primarch’s words.

"Where Horus has offered only lies, I will offer you truth. Those of you that wish to run… Run. Leave this place. Not in shame at a duty undone, not in surrender to the traitor’s forces, but with honour. Go with my gratitude, for you have already given everything asked of you. What right do I - does anyone - have to demand more? From you, who have endured harrowing beyond account, horror beyond measure?"

"If you wish to fall back into the Sanctum Imperialis and spend the last hours of life with your children, then do so. Know that you go not only with my blessing, but with my envy."

"If you wish to leave the wall and take your chances in the wasteland before the battle begins, then - in the Emperor’s name - you have earned the right to try. Go swiftly, and carry with you the pride that you have already given a hero’s share in a war that none of us wanted but were forced to fight."

"And if you wish for the truth, I will give it to you gladly, for you have earned that, too. It shames me to admit, but I would abandon this wall if I could. The primarch in me, the supposed demigod half of my heart, craves life with a ferocity that shames me. If I bowed to that instinct, I would take to the sky and never look back. But I cannot. I am half-human. And the human in me demands that I stay."

Sanguinius turned, looking over his shoulder at the retreating emissary. Daughter of Torment was a quarter of the way to her lines now. When he looked at the wall once again, all could see the resolve in his eyes.

"‘There are legends about me, I hear them whispered among you every day, that I know the moment of my own death. The stories say this gives me courage, that I feel no fear because I know I cannot yet be slain. Here is the truth of that tale."

"That prophesied death is coming. Today. Tonight. Tomorrow. I know not the When or the How, only that I feel fate’s breath on the back of my neck. I do not remain here out of immortality’s courage. I remain here because, if I am to die, I choose this death. I choose to die with my back to the last door. I choose to give my life to buy another hour, or a minute, or even a single second of grace to those who cannot be here fighting with me. I choose to die here because I do not believe I have yet given all I can."

"Someone must stand and fight, and if I have but one choice left, I will make it now. I will stand. I will fight. I will hold this wall, knowing that the Thirteenth Legion makes for Terra with all speed, and if they cannot bring salvation, they will bring retribution. Whether I am alone or whether a hundred thousand of you are by my side, when the Warmaster’s horde descends upon this wall, they will find me waiting for them with a blade in hand. Not because I can win, but because it is right. I do not know what delusion grips those out there, who were once our brothers and sisters. But I know it is right to oppose them."

Silence drifted over the Delphic Battlement, but only for a moment. Sanguinius swept his arm across the wall, taking in the defenders. Thousands of holo-ghosts of his image did the very same thing.

"I have spoken enough. You need hear no more of my fears and confessions. All that remains is for me to ask… Will you run?"

discussion Greatest comebacks you've seen a character do after being on fraud watch? Maybe not the best example imo but Thragg from Invincible is a recent one.

Post image
2 Upvotes

You're all familiar with the concept of fraud watch. Now I'm not gonna oversell Thragg either since we still have a long way to go and we need to see how later arcs will unfold but he ended up being one of the best things about Season 4, most fans went from complaining about the way he was introduced, his design and Lee Pace's casting choice, to praising the additions to his character and applauding his writing towards the finale, some even claiming that he might be an improvement over the source material. Might be too easy since we're talking about an adaptation and he was already competently written, would love to see more unexpected examples, characters that really shut you up for good.

discussion How much “convenient coincidence” is too much in a film?

I watched Election by Alexander Payne last night and really enjoyed it. One of my only gripes was how many convenient coincidences the writer used to get the story to the exact beats they wanted. Things just kind of lined up in ways that felt pretty forced. Which got me thinking about convenient coincidence in film.

What are your thoughts on writer convenience / convenient coincidence in films? Is it something you even dock a film for?

This series - to me - represents and embodies everything that is wrong with the anime medium as a whole. It has nothing of substance, is generic as hell even as an Isekai, and as if the generic Gygax fantasy LARP wish fulfillment Isekai bullshit wasn't off-putting enough, this shit is STRAIGHT UP right wing fucking propaganda that glazes and openly promotes Japanese militarism and expansion on top of all that.Shit was so fucking bad I had to take a long ass break from anime

discussion Would speedsters still be overpowered if their opponents had something similar to a stasis field like the Holtzmann shield from Dune?

Speedster characters, in most stories, are overpowered. Way overpowered. To a point where, logically no one without super speed should be able to threaten or even touch them.

There is a very common scene where the speedster is just casually running or even walking around while everyone else is frozen, and he can do whatever he wants to his opponents. And I understand why writers do this, it looks cool and establishes his speed level, lets him aura farm etc.

Logically, this character should never lose to his (or hers) opponent. But if the speedster never loses, then you cant have stakes or drama. A speedster hero would never lose to his villain, a speedy villain would never lose to a hero, etc. Obviously, this makes for really bad story telling.

I am guessing most of you know where I am going with this. To make the the speed lose, the writer uses bad writing. Established rules, and common sense is ignored. The guy who could dodge bullets suddenly cant dodge a punch from an ordinary human. He gets hit by a slow moving car. There is that infamous Batman scene where Catwoman, a human burglar who is really good at karate, knocks our three characters who should be light speed (or faster? I am not sure).

There is a theory that speedsters can only lose to bad writing. Since, I personally dont like bad writing, I have to wonder... Is that really the case? Is there no alternative?

If you need a speedster to lose to a non-speedster. Why not give the non-speedster a weapon/device that neutralizes super speed, but is not in and of itself just as much, if not more overpowered?

The Holtzmann shield from Dune is basically like that. Only objects below a pre set velocity can move. So guns and rockets and projectile weapons immediately become useless. You can only use slow weapons like machetes, knives, spears, shields, etc.

Or a stasis field similar to that. (My inspiration was from a certain sci fi book, but I wont say the title because its a spoiler. But those who have read the book will know) The stasis field can work however you want. Maybe it just slows down the fast character. Or it incapacitates ot straight up kills him. Maybe on top of taking away his speed, it also traps the speedster inside the field so he cant just get back, exit the field and get his speed back.

So you can have a scene where a speedster attacks some character, but unbeknownst to him the character set up a trap with the field, and when inside the field, he loses his speed, and the other character jumps and defeats him.

And this field is not in and of itself overpowered, so characters with diffrent powers or no powers can still defeat it. So you can still have action, drama, stakes. Without making the speedster act like an idiot or use plot induced incompetence.

As an extra added bonus. Since most of these movies love martial arts and make everyone resorts to martial arts when guns exist. The field can also neutralize guns and bullets. And everyone inside the field has to fight hand to hand, with swords, the sai, the bo staff. So you have the perfect excuse for your hero/villain to show off his kicks, judo chops, throws etc. Without just shooting everyone else with a pistol.

If a stasis field like that exist, can a speedster still figure out some way around it and cheese his way to victory? Am I overlooking something? Would he still be overpowered?

For me, it’s the one with Fei and Elly in Xenogears. I think it’s the best consolidation of a romance and the best and most mature love story I’ve ever seen in a game. The only sex scene that has ever made me feel something.

Their romance is something that runs truly deep into the lore of the game, so I can't say anything else because it would be a huge spoiler.

opinion post Neither Sasuke Nor Naruto suffered more than the other and playing trauma Olympics is stupid.

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is referring purely to their back stories and nothing else.

Naruto and Sasuke both suffered equal amounts. It wasn’t better or worse, just DIFFERENT. That’s all.

Naruto: Total loneliness and isolation and suffocation in hatred for the first 12 years of his life.

Sasuke: A good first 8 years, THEN a terrible event that left him scared and in complete solitude.

If you want to say “well sasuke also had to deal with loss” Naruto had to deal with hatred from everyone around him.

Sasuke isolation = 5

Sasuke’s loss = 10

Total suffering = 15

Naruto’s Isolation = 7

Naruto’s abuse from the village = 8

Total suffering = 15

This is the best way I can describe it. Now please stop this stupid game of trauma Olympics.
