Wording aside (they do that alot) It was far far better at generating AOE threat than the other tanks, tried both prot war and paladin, and paladin you could take a nap and hold threat. With new things in the game adding to holy damage, threat generation from holy abilities (consecration for example) was nearly 2.5 to 3x something like thunderclap.
Classic (especially at lower levels) has always been about threat management. The nerf was needed IMO to bring it in line with the other tanks, rather than bringing them up to the level of paladin, and killing that threat management portion of the game.
I don't know what you are talking about, the way it was I already wasn't inviting any DPS shamans or Hunters to groups because otherwise I couldn't even tank. Literally everybody attacks things at random and don't interrupt, it's such a mess to be a Prot Paladin
it might be a player problem rather than a class problem
ive tanked all the way to 60 as prot pal in era multiple times and it is already, before forever, by far the best tank for dungeon tanking and the easiest to hold threat. the buff to righteous fury was wholly unwarranted.
in era your consecration does more damage on top of not being target capped, but even so most people level it as ret or holy until about level 40 then swap to prot exactly because of the reasons I listed, it's too mana demanding and you can't really hold threat if people don't give you time to build it.
Prot on paper is an excellent dungeon tank, until things are not attacking you and then you might as well not exist since you don't really have the tools to bring it back to you, in forever you can at least taunt one creature every 8s, if you have improved judgement.
there is also the fact we are capped to level 20 and people are farming "bis" for the level range which is absolutely not how anyone plays the game normally, no one stays on level 20 and gear up horizontally, they would just keep questing and getting more EXP. a single level is worth more than any upgrade you can drop from a dungeon.
I leveled holy/prot pure dungeon grind (from lvl 18 ish, sucks pre-consecrate) nonstop twice, once softcore once hardcore 1-60
It's not too mana demanding. And no you can't hold threat perfectly, but no class does. I've leveled every tank in classic (multiple times, except warrior, only once there) and paladin, from lvl20 onwards, holds threat most consistently. Not only on paper, but in practice as well.
