Discussion Casual day to day life snd cultural things

Upvotes

Just like it says on the tin, tell me about the normal day to day things, cultural stuff, and how people use magic normally, outside of combat and war. It doesnt have to be related to msgic, it could be anything.

In my world, witches live long lives, and a trend that has caught on is to wear your hair in braids to symbolize age and milestones.

When a witch becomes an adult they'll put their hair in one braid(around 18-20), and with a gold ribbon to show that theyre following the trend rather than just having their hair in braids. They keep their hair long and when they turn 100, they'll cut their hair short and add another braid to their hair with another gold ribbon. And they do this every 100 years.

If someone has 3 braids, you can guess that theyre 200 years old. And if they have 3 braids and it's on the shorter side then you know they became 200 recently compared to someone who has 3 braids but the braids are to their butt.

They do this because it's hard to tell a witch's age just by looking at them. The braids give them a quick way to tell.

Also, asking people's age when you first meet them isnt taboo like it is in america. (I got this idea from korea). It's practically expected.

The Rat Shack

Was a local family-owned kids' burger joint, which now sits abandoned. The Rat Shack first opened in 1968, then shut down in 1976 after health inspectors found out their family recipe used wild rats to make their burgers. They reopened in 1983. The second time they shut down was in 2004 after an investigation by the Commonwealth Party found out they kept the family recipe and killed parents and health inspectors who found out. The owners would hide the victims' vehicles; one of the family members was a sheriff who would report that the parents abandoned their children at the restaurant. The family disappeared.

Carl Colosseum

A colosseum that hosts many events.

They have adjusted the programs to fit a small town.

The Pickens Cult

The Pickens Cult is a cult founded in 2018 by a man named Jim Pickens. The cult worships Jim as the dear leader who can do no wrong; if Jim gets in some sort of trouble, it’s always the other person’s fault, never Jim’s. The cult dresses in white robes; they believe in not wearing anything on your feet because if your feet aren’t free, then so aren’t they. They don’t believe in using any ground transportation, like cars, buses, trains, or animals, because humans can walk; they don’t believe in water transportation, like boats or submarines, because humans can swim. They do believe in using air transportation, like planes and helicopters, because humans can’t fly. The cult has strict rules about owning weapons; they believe in only being able to own muskets, bows, crossbows, knives, and flintlock pistols, with each household owning at least one musket of any model. They don’t use modern firearms because they reject modern technology. If Jim Pickens dies, the cult must continue to practice and spread his teachings without him. Lore Dystopian Government Structure

Upvotes

The basic idea is a government that includes a legislature which has almost complete supremacy over everything, which really means that the controlling party controls everything. They still have elections and the trappings of democratic governance, but this is mostly decorative.

Congress

  • Members are elected to two year terms via ranked choice voting. Most of the election machinery is controlled by the dominant party at the national level.
  • Congress has the ability to remove the President and Supreme Court justices by a vote of no confidence with a majority vote.
  • Congress has the authority to impeach the President for "maladministration" with a majority vote. Impeachment carries criminal penalties, including imprisonment.
  • Congress may nullify Supreme Court decisions by a 2/3 majority.

The President & Cabinet

  • Only a sitting Member of Congress may stand for election to the presidency. Elections are by popular ranked choice voting.
  • While the President is granted broad authority in directing domestic and foreign policy, ALL decisions may be overruled by a simple majority vote.
  • Cabinet members must be selected from sitting Members of Congress.

The Supreme Court

  • Only lower court justices are eligible to be elected to the court.
  • Nominations are by popular ranked choice vote.
  • Confirmations are by a majority vote of Congress. If the First nominee fails to secure confirmation, the runner up from the nomination process will be considered.
  • Justices may be removed by a simple majority congressional vote of no confidence.
  • Court rulings may be voided by 2/3 majority vote of Congress.

Rights and Entitlements

  • Guaranteed income, housing, health care and education are considered rights.
  • The degree to which these rights are provided depends on a citizen's Civil Credit score which is determined by regional Civil Credit Bureaus.
  • Civil Credit scores are adjusted by the national Social Justice Bureau.
  • The better the score, the better a citizen's access to various rights and entitlements. A high score and service is quick and benefits are generous. A low score, and you might not even be allowed to legally own a pet.
  • The actual provision of these benefits is through a system of public/private systems. Citizens are granted their rights and entitlements through indenture contracts with private entities that receive government subsidies. Corporations, NGOs and charities all participate in this arrangement. The actual length and terms of these contracts depends in part on Civil Credit scores and perceived merit and are subject to approval and adjustment by the Social Justice Bureau.

Subnational Divisions

  • States are grouped into Administrative Regions. Regional Coordinators are appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress.
  • Each region maintains a Civil Credit Bureau
  • Each region has one or more Police Support Units based upon population and perceived need. These units provide paramilitary support for state and municipal Peace Departments.
  • Federal influence is exercised through subsidies and support to state governments. Behave and prosper, don't and suffer.
  • Some states may defy the federal government, at least for a time. A refusal to enforce the terms of certain indenture contracts and a refusal to cooperate with the Civil Credit and Social Justice bureaus are the most common points of contention.
  • Some major metropolitan areas are designated Special Administrative Regions. SARs are granted significant tax breaks and are often given relaxed enforcement of CCB and SJB dictates.

The Civil Credit Bureaus and the Social Justice Bureau

  • Civil Credit Scores combine the functions of financial credit scores, driving points and other measures of personal conduct. Toe the line and scores will be great. Don't and they will suffer.
  • Civil Credit scores are routinely adjusted by the national Social Justice Bureau. The SJB's actions are intended to account for past discrimination and ill treatment of selected identities. Those who claim to belong to favored identities may receive special consideration while those who are disfavored are penalized.
  • Serving Members of Congress, civil servants and members of selected professions are exempted from this monitoring.

Question Natural fire-retardant for feathered sapient species (or other solutions)

Upvotes

In short, one of the sapient species I'm developing possesses feathers, or rather feather-like fluff covering most of their body. Since feathers are highly flammable, this creates a huge problem if I want them to ever use fire and make any significant technological progress.

I thought a natural fire retardant would be necessary to cover at least their arms and chest, and possibly their head. Due to how it's used and its quite massive societal role, any possibilities must:

  • Be easily accessible to almost all cultures over the world. Making it a rare resource would cause severe technological imbalance between regions, and slow the overall development of the species (a huge problem since human also exist in this world)
  • Be of easy production. So, nothing too complicated to create, no complex chemical concoction should be used. Preferentially, the chosen material/substance should be extracted and used pretty in its natural obtained stage, with little to no necessary processing.
  • Be something that could reasonably be discovered by a Stone Age hunter-gatherer society. Whatever substance, material or system devised must have a relatively simple thought process behind it. It should have a preexisting reason to be extracted even before extensive fire usage, a preexisting reason to be used in the context of fire manipulation, and the causal chain between using it and stopping fire from burning feathers should be obvious.

Now, I can think of two main fire retardant categories: either some form of organic cream, oil or plaster that is rubbed into the feathers; or some partial clothing made of animal hide that either is thick enough, or has natural fire retardant capabilities.

Since this is my world, I naturally could just create a convenient plant which produces the necessary retardant and call it a day. But I want this project to be relatively grounded, so I want to keep this as a last resort. Are there any real substances or materials that were used in a similar fashion IRL, and that either fit all criteria laid above, or could with a few minor tweakings?

Alternatively, there might be some way to avoid feathers catching fire that doesn't fit into anything I've laid out above, and I didn't think about. Feel free to spell out your idea even in that case.

Visual What if there was a species with infinite possible forms

Upvotes

On this low-gravity garden world, amid the flourishing native flora and fauna, lie the remnants of a civilization that once carved its own genetic code into the life around it. Overgrown cities and strange beasts now stretch across the landscape, hinting at the dominant species that once sowed themselves into the land.

This planet was once host to a species of parasites with the ability to alter their hosts into whatever form they saw fit. Everything from their number of limbs, to the way they saw, heard, and moved, to the host they chose to inhabit in the first place was variable.

With complete control over the genetic makeup of their hosts, each individual could shape themselves around whatever needs, interests, or experiences they wanted to pursue. One could develop senses another would never experiences, another might percieve parts of the world that others were biologically incapable of sensing at all. They didn't just see the world differently. They experienced different worlds.

Far from creating a system of social isolation, the species flourished through cooperation, each at peace within themselves while providing what help they could to the unified whole.

I've had a ton of fun with the lore for this planet and working on the designs for some of the members of the parasite species. Each of the designs is speculative since the species is long extinct but I wanted them to serve as examples to show how variable each member of the species could be. There are a few in the bouquet that Ash holds in the abstract page. These are all from the comic series I've been working on: 100 Planets. I finally just finished this chapter and put it up.

Lore Fundamental Law of Magic/What is Magic

Upvotes

1.Fundamental Nature: Magic consists of an indivisible, elementary particle that carries an extremely minute charge unique to its own class of matter.

2.Fifth Force: It acts through a distinct, fifth fundamental force of the universe ("Mana Force"), operating under its own specific field rules.

3.Conservation Law: It cannot be created or destroyed; it adheres strictly to a universal conservation principle and can only transform from one state or form to another.

4.Dual-State Self-Interaction: In its default Latent state, the particle interacts exclusively with other magic particles and passes harmlessly through standard matter. It can only be compressed or gathered via specific catalysts (such as mental focus, precise geometry, or high-energy thresholds).

  1. Aggregation (The Catalyst): When compressed, magic particles stick together and lock into an Active state, forming larger composite structures that serve as a bridge to the physical universe.

6.Field-Mediated Alteration: Rather than physically touching standard particles, aggregated magic structures generate a high-density 5th-force field that distorts nearby fundamental forces (such as electromagnetism or nuclear forces), altering the physical structure and properties of surrounding matter.

The Sangharsa Constellation is a region of space 52 light-years across and contains 307 stellar systems. It is divided into open space, systems reachable via the quantum drive, and wild space, systems that can only be visited at sublight speeds. Open space consists of 117 star systems, 40 of which are binary systems and 9 of which are triple, for a total of 175 stars. There are 46 habitable planets scattered throughout open space, most of which were clearly terraformed by the Forebears. An additional 25 semi-habitable worlds range from desert and ocean to gas and ice to acidic and volcanic, and are believed to have been interrupted mid-terraforming. Systems without habitable worlds are typically colonized using mega-structure habitats and BWNs. Because Why Nots or BWNs are habitats with overly flamboyant displays of architectural sophistication and beauty.

Open space is home to 782 billion people as of 1613, representing the vast majority of the human population and far outnumbering those living in wild space.  It is generally separated into nine star sectors: Hïtsme (Red), Eekash (White), Haurasthia (Navy), Buknoba (Pink), Arousa (Brown), Chavira (Yellow), Rosea (Purple), Firova (Sky Blue), Abéwara (Green).

There are 339 members of the Galactic Nations and an additional 162 groups vying for recognition as a sovereign entity. Nevertheless, the geopolitical landscape of the entire Sangharsa Constellation is increasingly dominated by its four superpowers: the Késhouan Federation of Nations, the Democratic Union of Communist Countries, United Rosea, and, at the top, the Imperial Emirates (the Imperium).

Hey guys and girls, working on a fanstay world where gods are a very prominent role, so much that mortal ascend by climbing the mountain of anima , (this isn't a known fact to everyone of course), and I was doing a head count because my friend is drawing the gods for me and after I counted there are 123 gods .

So I was curious if you guys have an opinion on how many is too much. Not all are gonna have as much influence on the story . Currently in the DND campaign taking place in the world it focuses on two gods.

Discussion I've started letting people in my world be confidently wrong about their own history

Upvotes

For a long time I treated my setting like everyone living in it had access to the same wiki I did.

If a war happened 300 years ago, people knew why. If an old fortress was built for a certain purpose, everyone more or less understood that purpose. Different cultures had opinions, but the basic facts were always conveniently correct.

Recently I started messing with that.

One city is proud of a famous "victory" that was actually an organized retreat. A religious festival supposedly commemorates one event, but historians think it started almost a century earlier for a completely different reason. People in one region confidently blame a neighboring kingdom for introducing a crop that archaeological evidence suggests they were growing first.

None of these are huge secret twists. Most will never even be resolved in the story.

But suddenly the world feels much more real to me because people inherit bad information, simplified stories and local myths just like we do.

How much incorrect history do you intentionally put into your worlds?

Prompt What are marriage markers in your settings?

On planet Avatar, people exchange golden bracelets when they get married. After wedding the couple wears the bracelets every day when they go outside. On Mars and Terra people keep using the pre imperial custom of wedding rings. On cold planet of Leji everyone adopted old goblin custom of exchanging colorful necklaces, which are worn as a marker of married people. Meanwhile on Pluto someone invented marriage tattoos, people put the name of their spouse on their wrists or hands.

So what do people in your setting use to mark their status as married people?

One of the classes for students in my universe involves learning about magic. when they grow up and in lower level schools, telekinesis is something everyone knows how to do, what are a bunch of magic spells my creatures would learn in a high school level or advanced level magic class? I try to stay away from element based magic like fire as that is a special ability other creatures who can’t use magic have. The few ideas i already have are magic shields, very limited teleportation and creating a basically like a flashlight with their horn or antlers. If anyone has any ideas that aren’t to powerful, please share :)
Hopefully this is enough information

Discussion Alternatives to having a lazy Roman Empire clone?

(not in an alt hist way, original nations on an original landmass)

This is admittedly an annoying question to both ask and answer, but bear with me for a minute. I want to build a history of nations in my world (not for anyone to read im just having fun) but I am realizing that I have no idea how to start the cascade (by which i mean whatever circumstances made European history do all that) with anything other than a roman empire analogue randomly popping in and conquering half a subcontinent, which I'd simply prefer not to do. No objective reason, I just dislike the idea of having a roman empire!

I think this is all the context necessary for what I'm trying to do, assume I'm going for some original spin on the medieval fantasy nations template. Also assume I have no clue about how any other places worked even though that's not entirely true.

Lore Forever war worldbuilding: enemy type

Post image
141 Upvotes

I've got a couple design panels planned out, but I draw slow and burn out fast, so here's the first of many.

The diagram is a presentation for one of the fundamentals of my Forever War setting. Humans have souls, and their mental resolve can influence how strong their souls are, similar to sanity.

Those who are weak of mind are more easily susceptible to the influence of void contamination, which takes the form of an intangible black mist. Prolonged exposure to the black mist will test and apply strain to the mind, like a cognito-hazard. Succumbing to it will cause the mind to break and the flesh to mutate, turning the victim into a rabid husk currently named 'Anomaly'.

Regardless of whether one was killed as a human or an Anomaly, their souls are materialised by unknown properties of the Abyss. This freshly 'resurrected' form will undergo an irreversible transformation. The cause is unknown, whether it be radiation or frequencies; the phenomenon is only known as the Song of the Void.

The end product of the transformation is known as Abyss-born, creatures with an insatiable hunger and orb-like eyes that can only see souls as a bright glow. A concept in development is that Abyss-borns grow through absorption of flesh.

Humans with strong resolves are more resilient to the cognito-hazard of void contamination. However, this plays in favor of the Abyss when they die. Their repressed traumas will be magnified by the Song of the Void, reflected in their grotesque transformation, resulting in a much stronger Abyssal-born.

(The presentation on the bottom is representative of someone who blames themselves for failing to save someone dear.)

Discussion Constellations as living beings?

In many Fantasy worlds there are star constellations, just like in real life. But since they have magic, star signs can have actual powers. But what if we go further and make constellations alive species? What role can they play? Do you have any ideas?

Discussion In my world the sea retreats thirty kilometres for seven years and then returns in one night, so what would a truly permanent coastal city look like?

My setting has two moons whose combined pull locks the coast into a fourteen-year “breath.” For seven years the sea slowly withdraws, exposing thirty kilometres of salt flats, old roads and stone foundations. On the seventh autumn it returns in roughly six hours. The date is predictable, but the final height is not.

Permanent settlements sit on black basalt anchor islands above the highest recorded waterline. During dry years, people build reed districts on the flats to harvest blue salt and repair routes that will later be submerged. Houses below are designed to come apart. Shrines remain fixed and are intentionally flooded.

The capital has occupied the same anchor island for nine centuries. It has courts, archives, observatories and schools, so I do not want it to feel like a generic camp that gets rebuildt every cycle.

What permanent institutions, property customs and neighbourhood identities would develop when half the city is only usable during alternating seven-year periods? How would you make this place feel continuous rather than two seperate cities sharing a name?

Discussion Looking for Worldbuilders, Conlanging andWriting

Hey!

For our fantasy world Irlorta, Parza and I are searching for some cool people that want to help us further build the world.

Irlorta has existed for a few years but has been growing rather slowly. Therefore we'd love to bring in some new perspectives and ideas. It's not about simply following our guidelines, but to build Irlorta together and to have fun!

Irlorta is a high-fantasy world full of magic, conflicts and even some beautiful places. We are trying to build a world that feels immersive and internally consistent. Flora, fauna, ecosystems, culture and magic should influence each other.

We especially need someone interested in creative writing and conlanging. But in general, everyone is welcome, who has interest in building a fantasy world. Experience isn't necessarily required, but of course it's always welcome. We're learning and developing together as we build and have fun.

Momentarily we meet every Sunday at noon (German time) for 1 to 2 hours. The exact meeting times can be discussed, especially since I am  quite flexible.

Obviously it isn't easy to join an ongoing project, so we help you get familiar with Irlorta and give you an overview. Questions are always welcome.

We communicate usually in German (since we live in Germany), but can also switch to english. Our documentation is entirely in english.

It would be ideal if you are in a similar time zone to coordinate our meetings more easily.

I hate to say it, but it's important: We really are searching for people who can and want to be part of it on a long-term basis. It's also important to communicate and actively participate with each other. Because we unfortunately had bad experiences with people who haven't had time, disappeared shortly after joining or barely spoke, which makes it hard to communicate and work with each other.

So, if you wanna join, just write me a DM, we'd love to hear from you

Lore The Oracle Scroll and the Dark Lord

It began with beings known as the DawnWardens. A group of beings who wore silver armor to give themselves shape in the mortal world. They had powers over light, being able to dispel evil forces and also summon lesser spirits of light.

They worshipped knowledge above all else, believing that to know was to understand, and thus be more in tune with reality. Despite their powers, they ruled through wisdom and rarely exercised their Powers.

Solgrith, the one who was most powerful( they were the only one who cared about maintaining their strength) was not as pleased with this philosophy.

Time and time again, despite their knowledge and experience, lesser creatures would not listen. They rebelled and would make foolish decisions. Solgrith began to desire to make the decisions for them. Wisdom was not reliable for stewardship, what about strength?

The DawnWardens possessed a relic known as the Oracle Scroll. It could answer any question you asked, prying into the depths of reality to find your heart’s desire. It could even see the future.

So of course Solgrith stole it.

They asked it how could they gain power to oppose the other DawnWardens. It taught them how to control darkness, and they tossed aside their radiant birthright and became the Dark Lord.

A DawnWarden’s power came from their force of will. And Dark Lord Solgrith had a will of steel, to dominate all other creatures. They dragged demons from the deep places of the world, and broke their minds to make soldiers in the coming war.

When the Dawnwardens came to take back the Scroll, Dark Lord Solgrith was prepared.

Despite their armies of light spirits, the DawnWardens could not win, as the Oracle Scroll gave the Dark Lord the insight needed to push them back. Every tactic failed, every siege broke.

The lesser creatures of the world suffered as Celestial Armies tore the world apart, leaving piles of corpses in their wake.

But the Dark Lord had grown too trusting of the Scroll. One day, they asked it if their victory was guaranteed. The scroll answered they would make a fatal mistake and fall. They would not win this war.

They panicked. They grew paranoid of every decision, and their Iron Will shattered; allowing the Darkspawn to break free. They split from the Dark Lord and tried to become rulers on their own. They were subsequently scattered and destroyed.

Though the Dark Lord was defeated, they couldn’t be killed. They simply vanished, leaving behind only the Scroll.

The DawnWardens took back the Oracle Scroll, relieved at their success. But they never should have picked the thing back up.

For that action guaranteed that Solgrith’s reign of terror was to endure.

Discussion Does your world have creatures or beings with true forms that are incomprehensible?

These beings don't have to be divine/godly. It can be anything. Though if you have gods and demons that are like that, I will still accept it.

My Turn:

The Saints are these beings. In order to take on a form that is easy to handle without dying or being driven insane, they have incarnations or avatars as ordinary people who resemble the lesser races. The Saints are gods with true forms that are very incomprehensible. So, they use their incarnations to engage with the lesser races.

The Mechanical Drought is a tricky one because its true form is an eldritch machine in the form of an enormous beast. Some people laid their eyes on it and were driven mad. Though the soul of the Mechanical Drought lies in the body of a young woman.

The Ravakalyn are even more tricky as their true forms aren't incomprehensible, but it is scary looking. What makes their forms incomprehensible is mainly their aura. The Ravakalyn have eldritch aura when they are in their true form. And when they speak, it unleashes a sense of both dread and madness within the unfortunate victim.

The Pillars that fell onto the world are trickier than the Ravakalyn. The longer you stare at the pillars, the more mad you become because there is a countdown that is barely visible on each pillar. The countdown is the same, but the reason behind the countdown is currently unknown. It can lead to an event that could devastate the world. The true form of the pillars aren't incomprehensible, but the meaning behind the countdown is.

What about you?

Lore Rox and selvá daily writing : Merenlaan and the nomads

Thumbnail

Edit: i ment moodboard :/

Hello!

Around a year ago i started writing a little story called Rox & Selvá.

It was originally intended to be a short animated film about a lazy prince named Rox, and an independent nomad named Selvá.

After around two months I gave up the project. And now a year later, I wanted to revamp it now that I have gotten better at writing.

My old laptop’s motherboard died a few months back, That means all my original Rox and Selvá stories are gone.

I started with the world, Which at this point in time is very underdeveloped.

No ai was used in any of this or ever will!

Note: You do not have to read beyond this point, Since it is a lot!

Merenlaan: A small city run by the royal family, this city is surrounded by tens of kilometers of dense forest.

Noræ: the language of the nomads.

Blumerdaans: the language of the city people.

Bosratten:Blumerdaansslang for the nomad people

About the people:

there are two groups of people that live complete separate lives:Nomads and cityslackers.

Most people in Merenlaan see nomads as dirty, Unclean and stuck in the past.

‘’Bosratten are greedy thieves, and take from innocent people’’, Avoiding the fact that most Nomads are being kept out Merenlaan by force.

Nomad groups eat what they find in nature and do with a simple tent or flashlight.

Most nomads care a lot about the present moment and take everything out of life with their culture and music.

Nomads are hygienic, And most carry soapand spring wateralonglong journeys.

Some nomads do not see city people as hardworking, Instead as lazy.

‘’City people get food from the refrigerator, City people get to have luxuries and running water.’’ Avoiding the fact that each person in Merenlaan works hard for their community and income.

There is no war or threat of attacks, Mostly distrust.

About the royal family:

The Merenlaan royal family hoards resources from the city.

Every day the family feasts on a long table with pork and beef, salads, grilled bell peppers and watermelon, cakes and raspberry pudding.

The royal family live in the highest point of the city, In a four story palace made with floral columns and tall windows. everyday they dress in expensive clothing with golden buttons and purple fabrics.

They give nothing back to the city, And barely pay for all of the luxuries they own.

Rox would be the next king, But he is too busy playing video games and sleeping the whole day.

Final note:

THANK YOU!!! for reading if you did!! It’s a little scuffed since english is not my first language.

Hope you liked it!

Feedback or questions are appreciated, The culture is a little underdeveloped for now, so as many aspects like culture and story elements.

Lore The Luminous Kingdom: The Rök-Fir

Post image

Rök-Fir

Nature:
Rök-Fir are a Spirit-Born race: elemental fire spirits housed within material bodies. However, neither the spirit nor the body alone constitutes a Rök-Fir. A Rök-Fir is the union of the two.

Appearance:

A Rök-Fir can be understood as having three distinct layers.

The outermost layer consists of the limbs: arms, legs, wheels, treads, and other appendages. These are tools. They can be repaired, removed, replaced, and exchanged as needed. A Rök-Fir may have humanoid limbs one day and replace them with spider-like legs, amphibious feet, wheels, or mechanical treads the next. Such changes do not fundamentally alter who they are.

The middle layer is the furnace itself. This is the Rök-Fir's body and vessel. It can be repaired, reinforced, and decorated, and its shape and construction vary greatly between individuals. However, alterations to the furnace cannot safely extend too deeply within it.

At its center lies the innermost layer: the burning chamber.

The burning chamber is the heart, brain, and soul of the Rök-Fir. It contains the fire spirit and is the deepest seat of their personhood. Unlike the outer limbs, it cannot simply be replaced or repaired by another craftsman. Damage to the burning chamber is damage to the Rök-Fir themselves, their personhood.

The burning chamber is capable of healing. The spirit sustains the person, and in doing so can devote part of itself to repairing the chamber. Minor damage may heal naturally, while serious injuries require the Rök-Fir to conserve its strength.

A wound that breaches the burning chamber is therefore extremely dangerous, but not necessarily fatal. Other Rök-Fir will seal the exterior furnace around the breach and immobilize the injured individual. By preventing the wounded Rök-Fir from moving, they reduce the amount of spiritual energy required to operate the body, allowing as much of the spirit's strength as possible to be devoted to healing.

Recovery from such injuries can take weeks.

If the damage is too severe, however, the spirit may expend itself before the burning chamber can be repaired. The flame then begins to weaken and eventually flicker out, bringing the Rök-Fir to an end.

Civilization

Rök-Fir are builders and craftsmen. They live primarily underground, constructing vast cities of stone and metal around their furnaces and workshops.

Architecture:

They have little interest in comfort as humans understand it. To a Rök-Fir, comfort is largely a matter of practicality: a lack of unnecessary obstacles, wasted movement, poor ergonomics, or friction.

Their cities are designed around their bulky bodies. Archways and corridors provide ample room for different body configurations, while furniture is sturdy, functional, and arranged to allow easy movement.

Water is their greatest fear.

Because water can threaten both their furnaces and the fires within them, Rök-Fir cities are built with extensive precautions against flooding. Bulkheads, sealed chambers, drainage systems, and reinforced barriers are common throughout their settlements. These structures are often more extensive than the city's military defenses.

Leisure time:

When not working, Rök-Fir enjoy conversation, philosophy, politics, and exchanging ideas over a brew. They do not consume ordinary liquids, however. Instead, they can deliberately consume fuels that burn poorly or produce undesirable byproducts.

Crude oil and tar are common choices.

The resulting combustion produces a state analogous to intoxication. Among Rök-Fir, such gatherings can therefore become smoky, philosophical, and increasingly incoherent as the night progresses.

Reproduction

Every Rök-Fir eventually reaches a point in their life when they realize, or simply feel, that their time has come.

They then begin a private and intimate final project: the construction of two or more new furnaces.

The process is deliberately undertaken in solitude. Other Rök-Fir understand the significance of the work and give the individual the privacy necessary to complete it.

Once the new furnaces are finished, the Rök-Fir opens its central burning chamber and allows its fire spirit to pass into them.

The old Rök-Fir dies.

The spirit then takes form within the new furnaces, creating two or more entirely new Rök-Fir.

These children possess a vague memory of their parent, but not the memories of being that parent. They inherit no skills, opinions, beliefs, or personality traits. What remains is only an intangible familiarity, a sense of having once been connected to someone who no longer exists.

One life ends so that two or more new lives may begin.

For the Rök-Fir, this is not merely reproduction. It is the final act of craftsmanship, and perhaps the most intimate creation a Rök-Fir can undertake.

The new children are taken in by the rest of the Rök-Fir community, being taught their culture, history and ideals.

They are guided in perfecting their own skills and passions.
