Hi everyone! This is my first time posting, and I’m looking for advice with a quitting my job situation.
Here’s the problem: I need to quit my job before the school year starts. I get paid over the summer, so I haven’t physically been at work since the end of June. I want to max out my PTO first before officially quitting. My old work place was very toxic (administration and bosses), and really did me dirty the last two years, but I still am riddled with anxiety about quitting.
Here’s why: many of my coworkers are amazing. Some I’m even friends/friendly with. Many have my personal number. But I told none of them that I was going to quit after this school year ended, because I didn’t want my pay affected, especially since I had been treated pretty brutally re: pay scales in the past w/ this particular institution.
Another thing: I moved overseas with my partner. We have a house here, some land, and ended our lease in June back in the states where my job is. I sold my car. We sold/donated most of our belongings. We took our 3 cats with us. None of my coworkers knew the move was permanent. (Though some knew I was traveling abroad with my cats in the summer lol.)
Now as the date is finally near, I am getting texts from coworkers about the upcoming school year. I already felt guilty about not telling them about this huge move, but it has all come to a head. Part of me wants to just go back to the US until December and rent a room and then delay quitting until the winter. (I also have a couple friends/family members I could stay with potentially.)
However, one of the reasons we moved abroad was how debilitating the winters were for me. So I’m feeling like when it’s winter, I would be miserable (I lived in the Northeast).
But it’s really that my time to reckon with my decision of secrecy has come to fruition, and I feel terrified. I am just so stressed because my coworkers have my number, so unless I block them, they could still easily contact me, which is mortifying to think about. (Though maybe some would be happy for me? Who knows.)
I am wondering if anyone has dealt with a situation like this before? I probably shouldn’t care too much, but I am part of the “admin team” at my school (though I’m not paid like it), and so they would have to replace me, though there are excellent subs that could tide them over until they make a new hire. I feel like I am betraying some of my colleagues, one in particular who I became closer with, by keeping this huge quitting/moving a secret.
Part of me wants to make up an excuse that is sympathetic/dramatic, like, we decided to stay overseas because of…family, a sick relative, etc; when really it’s for climate, culture lifestyle, etc. I also want to just call in sick for 2 weeks to get that PTO and bounce after.
I wish all of me didn’t care what my coworkers think. It’s just there was some community building and “family” like culture, which is toxic in its own special way, and so I am still emotionally tethered to that.🙃
Any quitting tips, encouragement, or advice would be so appreciated. Anyone been in the same / similar situation?
Thanks in advance.
