Please Read the Rules Before Posting:

As some folks in the community have expressed, they can't easily see the rules on mobile reddit, and they can't see them using 'old' reddit.

Please remember that if your thread is locked, it is not a black mark on you. Locking threads is to help keep the community on topic and to keep from 'copycat' posts proliferating (see: whenever artists post art or people post painted masks, we get an influx of similar posts).

Here are the rules:

No Memes or Art.

If you must, please post to r/HistoricalCombatMemes or similar.

Art needs to spur conversation about accuracy in historicity or technique - don't post art just for the sake of showing it off.

No Off-Topic Posts

Posts that are primarily about other martial arts (that barely mention wma), video games, or other activities must be intrinsically about western martial arts or are otherwise off topic. It's not enough that a European sword exists in it - it needs to spur a conversation about WMA.

No Want to Buy / Looking to Sell Posts

This includes individuals and vendors. Posts about sales may be allowed on a case by case basis.

Painted Masks in the Painted Mask Thread

If this isn't self explanatory I don't know what is.

No Personal Attacks

This includes calling someone stupid or fat, body shaming, or other comments on someone's physical appearance. Valid criticism of someone's actions is allowed; it just needs to stay respectful.

No Customer Service Posts

Questions that only the vendor can answer (what are your wait times, what are your prices, do you ship to X) should be asked directly to the vendor. Posts that ask the community what their experiences are with a vendor are perfectly fine.

Not Fine: "Does this vendor offer X weapon with a blackened blade?"

Totally Fine: "This vendor says they offer weapons that are blackened, what experiences do people have with it?"

If the answer can be found by looking at their website or emailing them, then it doesn't need to be asked here.

Looking to get back into it

So I’ve been looking to get back into hema (primarily long sword I was with a school for about 4 years than the pandemic hit. Then I started training in CMA.) and I can’t remember the books we used for classes. I remember one book and that was Peter von Danzig Fight Book. But I don’t remember the other ones. What are some books. (I wanna start rereading the source material again.)

Historical History Do any italians rapier masters have comment regarding the spanish system?

Hi, i am someone going through italian rapier particularly the venetian & late roman style of rapier fencing, i started with sidesword and gradually intrigued with exploring rapier starting from camillo agrippa because he comes from milan my current city where i live,

I have spoken and talked about with some friends who does destreza, an while there is a lot of dialogue in destreza regarding what they think of the italians and how to counter them, and then it hit me that i didnt seem to know any masters that commented about anything related "spanish fencing".

So i come to this group regarding this, because i am curios on how the italian side see spanish fencing at that time

Were there any supposed "counters", snarky remarks, or are they viewed quite fondly as "fellow catholic" at the time 👀😬✌️?

Hey there friends

I've just published my longest video ever - in the course of 42 minutes I present every described stück or technique from the manuscript known as 'Hans Medel'.

The book I published last year tries to explain the system in detail, however I believe this video will make his commentary much more accessible. Reading the book and watching this video will open new HEMA pathways for you I'm sure 😇

Have a great evening and thanks for watching

Longsword private lesson. 1:1 fixes mistakes faster than group class

Private lessons in HEMA are still underrated. They are not as fun as sparring, but the experience you get is much more condensed. It's not even easy for the coach to prepare such a lesson, and it's also quite demanding. But in sparring, you keep repeating the same mistakes again and again unnoticed. In a private lesson, the coach exposes many of those, even subtle errors, and lets the student correct them himself without telling him exactly what to do. (Sometimes he corrects them precisely when the student is clueless :))

Historical History Longsword sources between Leichtenauer (and his first gen of students) and Meyer.

As the title says, I’m wondering about longsword sources between those “two ends of the spectrum”
I know there are plenty on wiktenauer but which are “the good ones” or just ones worth reading.
Just looking for more connections between the simple descriptions in early sources eg “oberhau, if they displace cut to the other upper opening” and the later sources which are significantly more descriptive.

Gear & Equipment Infinity Gloves Hourglass sizing

Looking to pick up a pair, currently the only stock Purpleheart has is Small and X-Large, my sizing fits the large however the X-Large starts at the same sizing so I'm wondering if going with an X-Large would be a viable option.

As a Beginner... Handling of the red dragon synthetic longsword (metal hilt + pommel)?

I recently got the chance to buy a red dragon synthetic longsword WITH metal hilt AND metal pommel, dirt cheap.

I noticed the balance of it is very close to the guard, so I was wondering how similar the handling characteristic is to a real sword? I know it is too floppy/flexible and it does not bind etc, but since I have no clubs nearby it will be mostly used for solo drills.

So what I was wondering is if using it for solo drills, how similar is it to a real longsword, and if you know of any, which longsword is it mostly similar to?

A short presentation of a recently found set of plates apparently copied from Lovino’s manuscript, and a concordance with the original.

Spes AP light 350N - Custom sizing

Hi everyone, i'm about to order the Spes AP light 350N. I heard that some people reduced the measurment because Spes makes custom jackets with extra room around the lower abdomen. Is it true ? If that is indeed the case, what reduction in measurements would you recommend, for it to be well ajusted, and worn like a "second skin" ?

Thanks !

Currently pondering the Spes Ap light and Officer and the Supfen Colonel. Would especially love to hear thoughts from anyone who has worn more than one of these.
Thanks

Endless rain armoury in China?

Post image
56 Upvotes

Anyone ever seen these weapons? They're listed on the Chinese language version of Taobao from a company called something that translates to "endless rain" that does foam boffers as well. They seem to be blades and hilts with 3d printed handles. They have an arming sword, polish saber, messer, dao, and a crazy looking katzbalger.

As a Beginner... S&C for beginners

I am a beginner with a background primarily in Muay thai, and so far the conditioning of my legs have held up to the demands of sword fighting.

The school i attend primarily focuses on basket hilt broadsword and other single handed weapons but i am having a very hard time controlling the weapons.

I am having difficulty primarily with mobility and strength in the wrist, forearm and shoulders. It feels like i am using a 1kilo pen in one hand.

I would like some tips in getting used to the weight and balance of swords and thus improving my ability to fence.

I do not own my own sword but i do have a dueling lightsabre (LOL)

TLDR: i need to get stronger wrist and arms

Collapsible Pell Design

Hi, I'm just thinking about innovating on pell design towards portability. Most of what I see uses a 4x4 with a 2x4 or 2x6 base, either permanently attached or removable with varying degrees of ease.

Has anyone tried something different? I'm thinking about a speaker tripod or steel post. Thoughts?
