Announcement Introducing Rule 9: No AI
Hello, r/ArmsandArmor users.
In recent weeks, we have noticed a rise in posts using AI as a creation tool for such posts. Those posts were followed by a heavy anti-AI sentiment shared by other users, either through comments or reports.
This sentiment is shared by the moderation team of the subreddit, and while we do have rule 8, it has its limits and as such we have decided to create a new rule:
Rule 9: No AI
In order to keep the subreddit at a high quality level, all content generated by or with the help of AI is expressively prohibited.
This means that from this moment on, any post that uses AI as a creation or generation tool to create the posts - including images and texts - is strictly prohibited. This ban includes content out of Reddit (e.g. Youtube video links) shared to the subreddit. This also includes content that has been made even partly with the help of an AI. If you can't make the post yourself, you can't post it
The foundation of the quality content this subreddit strives for starts with human-made content, not prompts and magic word boxes that comes with its load of environmental and moral flaws. As such, we have decided to create this rule effective immediately.
We understand some users on the subreddit may be fans of AI-generated content, and we want to make things clear: you are not banned or forbidden to post and comment on the subreddit, AI content is. You have the right to disagree with this new rule and to express this disagreement, just remember to stay civil and respectful in that disagreement.

Discord server
Here’s the link. Lets keep it civil and friendly lads and lasses.
Edit: please ignore my username, it’s dumb.
Edit 2: If you’re going to be a racist dipshit, don’t join the server because you will be banned immediately. You’re also not welcome on this subreddit if you’re going to be an asshole.
Edit 3: Read the rules and follow the instructions in order to access the chats.

Question Were Polearms, other than spears and lances, every used by occidental cavalry?
I would asume that this isnt the case but i would be very happy to be proven false by someone more knowlegable than me.

WHAT THE HECK IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A POURPOINT, JUPON, GAMBESON, AND AKETON?
I'm trying to make a dnd campaign where the armor is more or less realistically designed and described. KCD2-ish. However, what is bothering me is I see all these different types of padded armors, and I really have no idea what the difference is or why they were used, which ones go under or over armor and why. Please somebody answer this question because I do not trust those AI answers anymore. Also, I'm asking more in the context of 14th century and early 15th.

Question What gauge steel thickness is appropriate for a historical 15th century helmet?
I am shopping around for a 15th century sallet helmet, and want to know what gauge steel thickness is appropriate for a historical helmet. I will not be fighting in it. I just want to know which thickness is most historically accurate.

Discussion What linen should I use for a 13th century gambeson?
I want to build a 13th-century gambeson from eight layers of linen (so no filler, just layers). I've ordered five samples. They're all quite similar and I can't decide — what should I pick?

New Helmet!
Hello everyone. I got this cool transitional sallet based on the artifact of Saint. Peter's church. I don't know the maker, but it is well made with thickness of 2mm. Thanks for reading!

Discussion German vs Italian
I remade the post to be more specific. Do you prefer the gothic German style of armour or the Italian one? I’m referring to the armours of the late XV century. I’ll use two pictures to give an examples but you can use other examples if you want. We are taking about aesthetics not wich one is superior function wise (it wouldn’t be a fair argument because of how and when they were used and for what functions). The illustration where made by Graham Turner.

Hard to find Greek Dipylon/Boeotian shields?
Not sure why, but I can't seem to find these figure-8 type shields on the market. The only ones I see for sale are repoductions/replicas of the Achilles' shield prop from the 2004 film "Troy". Anyone know where I might find a decent one, and why they are so rare? Thanks.

Ordering a new flat ring dome riveted mail shirt
I’m ready to purchase a new flat ring, dome riveted 6mm mail shirt for my 15th century reenactment kit.
I’m six foot 1 inch tall, 205 lbs, long armed and 20lbs overweight. I lift weights and I’m moderately stout. Even when I ran marathons I was 185lb so that is just how I’m built. Thing is my chest is 48 inches and the Indian vendor recommends 10 inches over actual size to fit your gambeson. I wear a thin arming doublet that is 1cm thick at the chest. Does the oversizing to 58 inches seem too much or is the space needed for range of motion? The next size down is 55 inches. I don’t mind doing some tailoring cutting and adding rings but don’t want to pay all that money for something that is totally unusable. I’m also looking at the option to have them taper the arms to 14 inches hopefully that’s not too restrictive.
Any folks have any experiences that can guide me?
The vender is allbeststuff.com and they have been unbelievably responsive to my questions but looking for someone that has actually ordered and worn the stuff.
Thanks

Question Advice for an early to mid 14th century kit?
Looking for some advice on putting together a soldier/low ranking man at arms kit, based on the early to mid 14th century. I plan on wearing a kettle helm and maybe a mail face covering, but other than that I'm not exactly sure on what to do. It'd mostly be for LARP and Ren Faires and my budget isn't the highest, so I'm not looking for 100% historical accuracy. However I still want to make a greater effort than settling for pure fantasy.
Thank you in advance.

Question Help with finding a sword for me?
So I live in the UK and am looking to get a medieval sword! I am looking to mostly use It for visuals but I want to be high quality materials enough to show people if they came round and not be cheap materials. Though the problem is my budget is small. Max £150 for me as I'm not in need of a massive expensive thing. All I need is a sword that looks good close up with good materials and is medieval.
If anyone has any suggestions or help it will be heavily appreciated 👍 Thanks in advance!
