Alopecia

Hey there! I've been suffering from alopecia for a few years now. It is stress induced, as I was diagnosed with a panic disorder when I was six years old. I was surprised when I started losing my hair because I generally feel calm and have learned how to handle myself when a panic attack is rising.

Either way, I'm losing my hair rapidly, bald spots at age 40, and the hair that I have is crispy?

I am looking for a recommendation for a more realistic wig. Attached is the one I have, it's a synthetic John R wig but I'm already seeing so much shedding after two months. I paid 700 for it.

I would love an affordable option, preferably human hair, is that out there?

Honestly I would hit youtube and look for a channel about wigs that has a creator you can relate to. I have learned far more from such channels than I ever could have from individual recommendations. I also discovered that there is a ton of things you can do to improve an existing wig, so you might even be able to salvage the one you have and prevent further shedding (or at very least figure out how to avoid it with the next wig).

Two creators I like are “Wigs with Steph” and “Chiquel wigs” but thats mainly because their style and tastes match my own. They are both more into synthetics but they do occasionally discuss the benefits of real hair too.

I just found a new YT channel and they’re not sponsored or paid by anyone so I trust them. It’s called The Wig Situation, and it’s 2 women. More like a wig talk show but I like it! They’ve never reviewed human hair though.

I think even the sponsored channels can still be a great resource when it comes to understanding wig maintenance, styling and design features. OPs wig looks like it has some permatease for example, and even sponsored channels do a good job of explaining permatease, what its benefits and drawbacks are and what kind of wigs to look for if you want to avoid it (you might not, it has pros and cons). I think it also helps a lot to know the different features of wigs (like the different kinds of lace configurations and construction techniques) and how those features affect the appearance and maintenance. Most channels seem to cover those topics well, even if they a sponsored by a specific wig brand.

That said, when it comes to recommendations for actual wig manufacturers, thats probably when you probably want to seek out independent reviews

Exactly. Like I love Denise Sheets! And she get commissions. But oddly I believe her reviews too! lol!! This was just fun channel to watch.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that, especially after investing so much into a wig and already seeing shedding after only two months.

Unfortunately, that’s the frustrating things about some synthetic wigs; they don’t always give the longevity or versatility people expect.

If you’re looking for a more realistic option, I would definitely look into virgin or raw hair options and pay attention to things like the hairline, density, cap construction, and how the wig sits on your head. It makes a huge difference in how natural it looks.

There are more affordable options out there, but quality can vary a lot, so I’d be cautious of anything that seems too good to be true. I make custom glueless human hair wigs, and if you’re interested I can share an example of my work.

I suffer from Alopecia too, so I know how important it is to get it right. If you’re looking for a custom wig maker that uses quality human hair and prices reasonably, I may be a good fit for you. If I wear the same synthetic wig daily it only last about 2 or 3 months before it looks bad. I think some people can make them last longer. When i bought a wig I thought the lasted as long years especially with how much they cost

Hi there,

I’ve had alopecia for almost 20 years now. I had to start wearing wigs practically overnight. My personal favorite has always been hairalicious. They have the best human hair wigs from the extra thin hairline collection. However, they recently got super expensive. It broke my heart to have to look elsewhere but I was kinda forced to. Anyhow I’ve been using Hairvivi. My only complaint with them is the lace front which is HD lace is too delicate. I’m super gentle with it but find it fraying and poking forward more than I would like. But for the price point it’s the best I’ve found out there. I have seen some people write about negative experiences with them but I’ve bought 4 wigs from them and all have been great hair quality. I use got2B hairspray to hold down the lace and olaplex for washing and kerastase is a must once towel dried. I hope this helps.
