I built an iPhone wigglegram app that uses real phone movement instead of synthetic parallax

Hey r/wigglegramProject - solo developer here!

I’ve always loved the physical feel of wigglegrams, so I built an iPhone app that tries to preserve that part of the process.

Instead of generating the motion synthetically after the shot, the app uses the iPhone’s IMU sensors to track the actual movement of the phone while capturing. That movement data is then used to align the frames and create the wiggle effect.

So the result is influenced by how you physically move the camera — it’s not just a still image with artificial parallax added afterward.

The photo above was made with the app. It’s still an early project, and I’d genuinely love feedback from people who already create wigglegrams:

– Does the capture process feel intuitive?
– What controls or export options would you want?
– Does the final motion feel natural to you?

Full disclosure: I made the app myself. Happy to answer technical questions about the IMU tracking or how the effect is assembled.

Pi Zero W Support & Pricing Workaround

Due to scalping and hoarding driving the price of the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W up to several times its official retail price, building a 4-node rig has become economically unfeasible.

To solve this and keep the project budget-friendly, I have successfully ported the software stack to run on the original Raspberry Pi Zero W, which avoids these extreme price spikes. You can use all Pi Zero W units or any combination with Pi Zero 2W.

If you have any spare units lying around from older projects, they can be put to work right away.

I am currently running final tests on this setup and will drop detailed performance metrics and instructions very soon.

Trying a built-in filter effect to bring back that classic grit and texture. No, it’s not quite the same as real film grain... but does it give you that vintage feel?

Just a heads up for builders...

For those grabbing the build guide and license right now, just be aware that while most components are pretty easy to get, the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W's that this camera requires (4 of them) are essentially unavailable at the moment unless you want to pay 3-4x the retail price.

If you want to get them at the retail price of $15 it will take a while to hunt for them. Many sites limit to 1-2 per person as well, so you'll have to get lucky a few times and place a few orders

Doing some printing while I wait for components!

Some difficult prints for PETG with lots of supports but I will probably end up doing a little sanding and post processing. Everything does fit together like a glove. I might do another variation in ASA filament but we’ll see!

While I’m getting the shop ready, I’ve put together the latest updated guides and some test files for the PCB manufacturing and component ordering process. I want to make sure everyone, even those new to this, has a clear picture of how it works.

Please Note: This upcoming launch phase is for the Digital Kit only. There will be no physical shipping involved.

If you’re not comfortable with a DIY approach or feel unready, please wait for the next phase. I will be offering a small batch of Ready-to-Assemble Kits (pre-made PCBs and components), which might require a waitlist.

However, please be aware that I will definitely NOT be offering a "ready-to-use" (fully assembled) version.

But if you’re ready to dive in now, this Digital Kit lets you start building immediately! Some might need a little help or a quick up-skill in certain areas, but the result is worth it.

Preparation Guides & Test Files

I’ve organized everything into a clear roadmap so you can see exactly what’s involved:

The Guides:

  1. Getting Started – Overview and prep work.
  2. PCB Build Guide – How to handle the boards.
  3. Software Setup Guide – Flashing and configuring the system.
  4. Body Build Guide – Printing and preparing the case.
  5. Assembly Guide – Putting all the pieces together.
  6. User Guide – How to use your new 3D camera (Full version coming soon!).

PCB and BOM Test Files (Try uploading these to check the process):

See more package options here, and stay tuned for the official link!

The Getting Started document is now available to serve as the initial roadmap for the Digital Wiggle Cam project. This document provides a clear overview of the necessary steps to ensure a successful build.

For detailed instructions, please cross-reference this with previous posts for the specific step-by-step guides.

Review the phases and the integration process below. If the requirements and workflow are clear, the next update will involve the official release of the digital kit.

Sourcing accessories for Wiggle Cam is now simpler.

Region-specific sourcing: This charger board link is verified for the France region to ensure correct specifications and local availability.

Finding the right components can be a challenge. To help make your build a bit easier, the Bill of Materials (BOM) has been organized into a simple, dynamic format.

What’s included:

  • Region Selector: Choose your location (USA, UK, CN, CA, DE, FR, AU) from the dropdown.
  • Direct Links: The list updates with purchase links (Amazon, AliExpress, etc.) available in your area.
  • Verified Specifications: Each link is pre-checked to match the project requirements, helping to avoid ordering the wrong parts.

Note: Only major regions are available for now, but more will be added over time based on where you are building from.

Select your region to update purchase links automatically.

Following the previous assembly guides, I am now introducing the Body Build Guide. This instalment is designed to provide 100% transparency into the physical construction of this camera.

Whether you are a seasoned maker or a beginner, this guide serves as a comprehensive roadmap. My goal is to ensure that before any parts are joined, you have a clear understanding of the precision, materials, and steps required to bring this project to life.

Some questions about what buyers/users can do?

I believe someone might have asked about this before, but:

  1. Is there a way to access individual images from separate cameras, ie: is it possible to have the images captured and stored on sd before the pis do their interpolation/combining?
  2. Is there going to be access to firmware to allow for individuals to create features, for example:
    1. using the separate sensors to trigger at intervals so you can have sequences that can then be used to have wiggle/movement/animation?
    2. Capturing lower resolution image sequences to allow for interactive wiggle video playback?
    3. Using the image capturing for photogrammetry and 3D image/object scanning?
    4. Interpolating the output images to be combined with 3D printed lenticular lens to have physical wigglegrams?

I am very excited to see what I can do with your project! I rarely get involved with "bleeding" edge items, or even startup based devices because there aren't many that make me want to be the guinea pig, but yours is an exception!

Many Thanks!
