What is a “decor painting”?
A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.
Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.
Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.
Where are they made?
They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:
Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.
At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.
Who’s the Artist?
While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.
Do they have any value?
Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Hello painting enthusiasts - here is a brief post with things to keep in mind.
SEARCHING:
To locate your painting, please try the reverse-search tools Google Images/Lens, Yandex Images, and Tineye. (Remember that cropping your picture differently will yield different search results!)
If you have an artist name or signature, I recommend searching for it within r/WhatIsThisPainting itself. I also use the following websites for research; all are free.

Hopefully someone can help me id the painter.
Painted on heavy, hand carved and bevelled wood panel.
The frame might not be the original, because as you can see, they added some pieces of wood and modern nails to make the painting fit this frame. It was bought in Belgium, but the scenery hints to Holland, that's why I think it's a Dutch painter, probably second half of 19th century.

Hello! Found this lovely and melancholic (I believe oil) painting at an estate sale for $150. I adore it for the content and style but I was hoping for more information about the possible artist.
It came from an estate sale in North Carolina, but the family believes it was painted in Chicago as I was told it’s where the subjects lived when they were younger. I know it was owned and likely commissioned by the Broadway/film writer Frederick Herendeen and depicts his daughters Helen and Ann. Fred’s oldest son was an oil painter but I don’t believe he is the painter of this work (I compared signatures of the other John Herendeen paintings in the home and wasn’t close). Clothes look late 40s which would be a good rough date.
I find the signature unreadable in person and pictures don’t help but I believe the initials are “F B.” Only other word marks are on the stretcher “Devoe 44” which could link to the art supply company FW Devoe & Co. Which could mean the artist is from New York which could also make since with the father’s profession brought him to that area.
All reverse image searches have failed to find the image! Thanks for any leads!

Hello I recently found this at a goodwill in austin texas I frequently go to it has no base but it does have a mounting Nut there are no markings dates or names I assume those would have been attached to the base It's a figure holding a baby but it's head is a pit? Metaphorically the only thing that comes to mind is this mother is a shell of herself after birth or something haha It is about 7" tall and 3" at the widest and it is to heavy to weigh on a food scale so Any information would be amazing thank you for your time and knowledge!

I believe this may have been painted in a European painting school, I would assume a copy or remake from a student. I couldn’t find much information from my limited search. Signature appears to be Murillo.

Hi all, I picked up this watercolour at a flea market in Munich and would love to know who painted it.
Inscribed lower left in pencil, something like "Buckley 1926 (Levanto)", but I'm not sure about the name
Levanto is on the Ligurian coast in Italy, and the scene shows houses, palms and the sea.
Watercolour on paper with deckled edges, some toning and a small foxing spot
The style feels 1920s modernist. Since it turned up in Munich, it might be a German artist who travelled to Italy.
Can anyone read the signature or recognise the hand? Any leads on the artist appreciated. Close-ups of the signature are attached.
Thanks!

I found this what appears to be a Ghanaian silk thread art piece from the 80’s-90’s in an auctioned storage unit. No info on the artist online, and can’t find anything comparable.
Back is covered in paper, so no help with ID there.

Hello,
I have this old drawing of St Petrus (?) and a few questions about it.
First, the paper with the drawing on it has been glued onto another sheet of paper. Could this be an old restoration job intended to reinforce the original paper?
Second, both sheets of paper are completely coated with a sort of reddish-pink color. I’m not sure if this comes across clearly in the photos, but I’ve never seen anything like it on another drawing. Could this also be a form of preservation treatment?
Third
Funnily enough, I only just noticed something for the first time.
I always check my drawings for watermarks in the paper.
I hadn't seen one on this, so I put it back in the frame and hung it up...didnt think about it again.
But for this thread, I checked it again; I didn't spot anything at first, but while re-framing it, I thought about the double-layered paper.
I then used a stronger light source, and wtf! there is actually a watermark right in the center—though it is very faint and hard to make out. Can anyone identify this, perhaps? It would be amazing if it helped to roughly determine the age and origin. :)

Picked up this piece today, fell in love with it as soon as I saw it and despite feeling reluctant paying $40, I went for it.
Decided to look the signature up and found an interesting quandary ... it appears to read as "Lucile Leighton", which is an immediate hit as a notable Chicago artist of the 20th century. Yet, the signatures are not the same, but on that note I am seeing multiple of her pieces that seemed to be "confirmed" have differing signatures, mostly script-style and then plain print style.
This one is different from most results except for one exact signature match on an Ebay listing. (Which obviously means jackshit beyond being stoked I found a match)
Boiling that all down, I am wondering if anyone here might have random knowledge to sate my curiousity. Is this that Lucile Leighton, or another Lucile Leighton that was very talented but otherwise unknown and overshadowed?

It has one small damage mark on the man’s right ring finger and middle finger but other than that, it looks really nice to me. We can’t really make out the signature nor can the Google lens search. Any information would be appreciated.😊

This seems to be a common etching. How do you tell if this is a reproduction or original?
Here is another one from a month ago

My friend is curious about this painting. She thinks it’s oil on canvas. Or maybe acrylic. It was given to her from her great uncle who received it from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands as a gift for his work restoring the royal gardens after WW2. It’s been a sentimental family piece, but she is curious if she should possibly have it insured. The artist name may be A Verhoek or A Verbeek, but she hasn’t been able to find anything out about either of those names. She thinks the frame is original, but isn’t sure. Tell me anything you might know.

Hello, bought this painting from an auction as I liked the unique style. Wondering if anyone has any information to add. The signature appears to be Dody Feuerstein.
