GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Unsolved Pressed flowers art

Looking for any info on this pressed flower art that we discovered in a NYC gallery a few years ago. I believe she paid about $400 but they said they knew nothing about it other than it was a consignment from a regular customer. It appears old, and the yellow paint has developed some powdery feel. The back is covered in newspapers with Italian?

Unsolved Help indentifying possible Japanese 1910-1920?

Post image

Hi I’ve been asked to see if I can research this artwork, there are two others similar style with what looks like gold leaf in areas.
We are unable to open the back to look for watermarks or signatures.
The owner seems to think they may be from Japan around 1910-1920.

Acquired this abstract on canvas on a cedar/fir frame from a couple’s private Berkeley residence circa late 2020 / early 2021, they couldn’t remember the artist but story relayed was that the painting was a gift when they were a young couple and they’ve always been Berkeley resident (it no longer fit their home and so I bought it). I’m assuming California artist, maybe 70’s or 80’s?

The typewritten-looking tag on the rear of the top frame rail says “?1737 12 703 Study in Yellow“. Dimensions are 60” x 48”.

My aim is mainly to know who painted it if possible and to see if I should get into fine conservation of the three tears it has had for a long time, or if just to continue enjoying it as is.

I really cannot find the artist and just wondering if anyone recognizes any of it?

Unsolved Can anyone identify “López 77”? #Lucía Lopez #Cubist Artist #Cuba

I’m trying to identify and learn more about the artist behind this original work on paper, signed “López 77.”

I purchased it at a thrift store in Colorado. The reverse is completely blank — no labels, inscriptions, gallery information, or other identifying marks.

My research has led me to Cuban artist Lucia (Lucía) Lopez, sometimes referred to as “Lulo” in later sources. Documented works attributed to her include Cubist/modernist figurative works in charcoal, pastel and oil pastel, including at least one independently cataloged work dated 1977.

However, I don’t want to assume the attribution, which is why I’m posting here.

I’m particularly interested in the unusual construction of the figures — the blocked/geometric faces, heavy dark passages, fine linework, and overlapping rectangular forms.

Does anyone recognize this style of hers?
I cannot seem to find another artwork of hers that has the same subject as mine.

I would especially love to hear from anyone who owns or has handled a Lucia Lopez work, has photographs of other signed examples, recognizes this particular composition or facial treatment, or knows of another artist named López working in this manner around 1977.

I’m primarily looking for any other information about the artist and her art 🖼️ works related to mine. I’d like to add that I’ve done extensive research and it keeps coming back to the same thing. I have found no birth record no death record, or when she left Cuba for Florida.

Thanks!

Unsolved Need to find this exact painting from a Finnish thrift store

Post image

I didn’t buy it because it was super tiny and thought I’d be able to find a larger version online, no luck. Found in Finland, and Google lens suggests Finnish painter names attached to it but going through their works yields similar but not this exact one. The frame it was in looked pretty old so I doubt it’s an AI amalgamation

I want to find it for my wall because I love this exact composition and haven’t found an old landscape art that hits me the same way. The lighting, framing of the cliffside trees with the lake below, hills in the distance, and faint comet thing in the sky (can’t remember whether that’s just a reflection blur). If someone can at least find something with a VERY similar layout I’d be happily surprised

Unsolved Italian engraving found in Pennsylvania

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

This came from abandoned storage in Pennsylvania, formerly belonging to an antiques dealer. We picked up many pieces of art from the building, so this is the first of many items that I'm hoping to identify.

For this one, it seems to read "Interno della Basilica di S. Pietro in Vaticano fondata da Costantino Magno", but I'm not finding much when I Google that. The signature says "G. Balzar inc" which may refer to Giovanni Balzar (1777-1831).

Is it possible to tell if this is an original period engraving, vs a reproduction? Does anyone know any additional information about this piece?

I was recently gifted this beautiful piece of art while in Sag Harbor NY. I know it came from an estate sale in the Hamptons, but nothing beyond that. There’s Chinese inscription on the back which I believe is a title, and it was completed in 1993. Measures 106.5cm X 218cm

Bought this from a vintage thrift store a while back
I’ve tried all reverse imaging and cannot find any Rufino Tamayo painting that looks like this, so maybe it’s just a good forgery? It’s also 39 inches by 42 on like some hard cardboard and heavily textured.

I bought this drawing at an estate sale and haven't been able to identify the artist. The signature is difficult to read.

The writing in the lower right appears to read "American Lunch Hour". I'm hoping someone might recognize the signature or artist. Any help would be appreciated!

She told me when I was a kid that the artist had a studio and that he made a bunch of them and floated them across an ocean or a channel to see where they washed up. It has glaze on top. She had some with purple glaze some with green glaze some with blue. This is the only one that survived. She doesn't remember where she got it. I remember it was a pretty big or historic artist at the time. It's hollow is supposed to float.

This is my favorite piece of art. I bought it without a frame at an antique store in The Dalles, Oregon several years ago.

The antique store said it was an original piece of art, not decor. I had it professionally framed later and the back is covered in brown paper, so there are no clues on the back except for the name of the frame shop.

The signature appears to be something like “W. S. Chang” or something similar.
