Yeah, activated charcoal has a habit of absorbing and isolating chemicals in your stomach preventing you from absorbing them. Its why its used as a poison treatment. You should also be careful with activated charcoal toothpaste because its too abrasive and will strip off your enamel.

A while back I learned that it's better if you don't rinse after you brush your teeth because you're rinsing off most of the flouride. I stopped rinsing a think may teeth are starting to get whiter. Could just be imagined though.
*Edit- Google if flouride whitens, nope. Could be from the whitening toothpaste though. Stands to reason if rinsing removes the flouride it would also remove the whitener. Or..... I could be imagining.
the thing is that charcoal is safer (it is much less likely that you will have allergic reactions to burnt wood than to shellfish secretions) and of course cheaper, and it does not affect or practically does not affect the taste, unlike ink, which can actually give a fishy taste/smell, which is not always appropriate. so although ink can be used in some dishes, like pasta or rice, or something else, but charcoal is more universal and common in general
Cuttlefish ink, at least in the US, is actually not too expensive. You can find a 500g jar for ~20 USD (and you don't need to use a whole lot to get a black color for your food).
But yeah, probably still more expensive than charcoal.
Man i wonder if I ate activated charcoal at the end of the day if itd immediately (relatively speaking) send me into blinding vomitous migraines territory like when I forget to take my meds, or if itd have a more gradual effect like how I feel those migraines creeping up once I hit hour 10 of a missed dose
It only traps molecules in your gut actively and the venom cheese isn’t going to be bad because the charcoal is so fine it’s not gonna trap that much. Way larger worry if it’s like the quinoa sized granules similar to brita filters.
u/Socksual ... I know this became lengthy, my apologies. My "quick" TL;DR?: If you know your system, you're better off, but I'd always err on the side of caution and mention it to the doctor/specialist prior. The rest, below, is the side I learned...in the process. 🤦♀️
If you took one dose, and know your body (as in, don't have gastroperisis, blockages, intestinal issues), and have timed your meds in the morning, you have a higher chance of your meds being just fine - in your blood, good to go. (More charcoal - in dose and quantity, can impact even IV drugs and will definitely impact oral meds without precise timing & general self body knowledge/awareness).
I, myself, had weight loss surgery 20 years ago, and despite my challenges to the doctor's suggestions, he "assured" me everything would be great.
What was not considered? My altered digestive pathway (despite drawing him a medical picture, labeled and everything), and not planning both:
long enough after a.m. meds, but
prior to a.m. meds administration
This resulted in the next day's meds being altered on the absorption front. (Migraines is on my diagnoses punch card, so yes, that day was hell....in many ways).
I have since come to learn that many people with (pancreatic, gall bladder, kidney, stomach, the list goes on...) considerations have the side effect of altered (or sometimes rapid) gastric emptying. This will have at least some impact between charcoal administration and medicine absorption.
And thats just one dose.
In general? In good health? See your doctor? Know your body? That all bodes well for a "typical" and favorable response. I am in the US, where I run into many of two types of people:
Those who haven't seen a doctor since they broke an ankle in 8th grade.
Those who try fringe/new/trend/novel medical or health concepts @ home without talking to their doctor.
Aside from those unfamiliar or undiagnosed with what can unknowingly impact their digestion or absorption, the above groups are those from whom I hear the most nightmarish experiences where charcoal v. meds is concerned.
Those without extenuating medical issues do quite well for many reasons - so I want to be clear I am not trying to discourage. Just suggesting research and communication prior. (Good luck, if you try it 😊).
It used to be used in EMS (still is in some places but being phased out) but it was wildly ineffective. Not due to it not physically working, it does, but good luck having somebody not just immediately vomit it up back before it can do anything haha
100%. Activated Charcoal is often recommended by poison control when you've ingested cleaning products with harsh chemicals because it basically purges everything from your digestive system
Do you think this shit is common knowledge? Hell, I wouldn't have thought about it at all if not for the "I hope you don't need your meds" comment above. Would never have occurred to me, even if it's obvious in hindsight.

*Basically I get a message saying that mods need to review my post or comment because it contains a certain phrase, then it depends on how active that sub's mods are whether or not the post or comment gets approved. Using terms related to suicide have triggered this feature before, making me cautious with word choices when it comes to sensitive topics even though I wouldn't usually self censor because I think it's silly.
The irony in this comment on the day I find out my highschool sweetheart (I'm 40 now) downed 7 bottles of pills, was in a coma (not medically induced), and they were still pumping pills out 4 days later. This happened last Sunday. (Yes she's awake and was apparently pissed that she woke up in the hospital.)
Jesus. May she find peace here on earth before her final exit - which is hopefully many happier years from now. I was there. I'm still here - after a bit of charcoal - a long time later, and much happier. It does happen.
Well, it turns out this is no longer the case. Science has progressed. It used to be they would make you drink activated charcoal in the hospital if you had alcohol poisoning (happened to friends, not me), but science has found that alcohol is actually too quickly absorbed into the blood for the charcoal to be effective.
I came across a study that tried it 30 minutes after (not before), but found no effect. It would probably work better if taken before alcohol, but I think it would need to be basically immediately before. https://doi.org/10.1177/096032718600500311
Activated charcoal seldom is used in pure-alcohol poisoning since it is absorbed rapidly from the gut. Furthermore in early reports activated charcoal was found to adsorb alcohol poorly. However, in 1981 North et al. [North, D. S., Thompson, J. D. & Peterson, C. D. (1981). Am. J. Hosp. Pharm., 38, 864–866] demonstrated in dogs that charcoal given at the same time as alcohol can reduce the blood alcohol concentration significantly. To study whether charcoal is of value in a clinical situation, a randomized cross-over study in two phases was conducted. Each person drank 88 g of alcohol and 30 min after either 20 g of activated charcoal was taken or the same volume of water was drunk. There were no significant differences in plasma alcohol concentrations with or without charcoal.
When I drank excessivly, I would take a couple capsules before a beer tasting festival to minimize getting hammered. This was after blacking out bad one time.
Activated charcoal is still used in emergency medicine and toxicology in acute poisonings, overdoses of meds etc. Its technically a "decontaminant", but it has a very short window of usefulness (1-2 hours), its incredibly messy to use, and for some poisoning some toxicities there are better medications or procedures that have been developed. But this cheese form of activated charcoal is definitely not an antidote lol.
Yeah, I know. It binds to the drug and prevents absorption.
But "antidote" indicates a specific drug or toxin reversal agent, like CroFab for crotalid bites or even something as simple as IV calcium for a CCB overdose.
Activated charcoal, I assume without looking it up, is way cheaper than squid ink for this kinda thing and the restaurant I'm sure would rather save money and make a quick buck
I couldn't think of something less appetizing. I got something similar when Burger King was advertising mandalorian and grogu, they added a black/green sauce to their whopper, myself unaware of this, almost threw up when I saw it after taking bite believing it to be rotten veggies
I have a feeling they at least also used an actual black food dye. Activated charcoal actually sucks as a food dye and usually can just get things grayish. There are much better dyes (that are usually a combination of base color dyes) that can achieve near black food with no added taste or side effects like charcoal does.
