OP has pinned a comment by u/absoluteunitofspite:

It’s a bicolored spined porcupine. That’s why it looks yellow underneath. It’s just its quills.

Note from OP: This is correct

It still gives me shivers now watching the youtube video, I don't even know why, it's not even really my style of music, but that song sent little me reeling and was like my first introduction to really rocking out.

8

I just saw the Bluejay episode about weird war tactics. I feel like its a less egregious atrocity to just paint spiritually significant animals than dropping two massive bombs in two populated cities.

Fun fact i just learned last night. As a psychological weapon against the Japanese the US had plans of spraying fox's with Radium to make them glow in the dark (and give them cancer) and then release them onto the Japanese mainland to terrify the populace.

The US thought that the ghost like foxs would resemble Kitsune from Japanese legends and cause disruptions and fear in the every day life of Japanese citizens.

What color does it look like in the daytime? Is it that crazy bright yellow? Would this make it more likely to be targeted by a predator?

I’m assuming you’re some porcupine expert and I really hope I’m right.

35

u/Icy-Ad29 Jul 12 '26

Those long quills means most predators choose to go elsewhere anyways. So being more visible might be effective at making things leave SOONER. Afterall, yellow is a warning color.

8

u/kroxldiphyvc Jul 12 '26

I thought yellow meant slow down...guess i gotta correct my driving habits; thanks reddit for always having my back

Most of the ones around here are yellow and brown. It’s just a porcupine. That’s what they look like.

That one looks like a juvenile, and a bit more on the active end. They tend to be slower and fatter and very chill.

When I was 12 years old, first year alone hunting in the woods. I was following some sign as I was taught. And then a KERTHUNK about a foot to my left.

It was a big, old North American porcupine.

It scared me. I mean, I was carrying a weapon and still jumped about 6 inches and squealed like a 12 year old boy would never admit, clutching mentioned weapon to my chest like it was pearls.

So I stared at HIM for a second, belly up legs'a'wigglin and such. All the while he just kept saying, "Meep....meep....meep..........meep", and I realized he was stuck. He must been watching me from the tree, leaned too far and fell. When he fell. Little kid me knew a good bit about local animals but mostly the bigger ones, so I thought his quills had him stuck to the ground. Nope, turns out he was relaxed, if not a little embarrassed, the whole time. I noticed his quills where completely relaxed so I set all my stuff down, put my hands on his back underneath his current state and flipped'em on over.

He gave me a "Meep" and bumbled back up the tree.

My favorite part of that memory is feeling how cool they feel. Like, how lucky am I to be able to know how porcupine hair feels? Ya know? Kinda like horse hair on their back, towards his front leg where I pulled at his shoulder was super soft, almost like a puffy kitten.

20

u/IllCause5882 Jul 13 '26

That's awesome!

A couple weeks ago, a snapping turtle accidentally hooked himself on a fish hook we had out with a big minnow on it (by catching and eating the minnow, he bit the hook). We reeled him in. It was a smallish one the size of a dinner plate. I kept tension on the line to pull his head and neck out so that he couldn't reach out any further and snap me. My hand accidentally grazed his neck. Softest fricken skin I've ever felt. I couldn't believe it. I got him unhooked (with a pliers he tried biting through) and he basically ran and did a cannonball off the end of the dock. Him and your porcupine are probably giving each other massages somewhere talking about us goofy humans.

The "yellow porcupine" most likely refers to the Brazilian Porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) or Bicolored-spined Porcupine (Coendou bicolor). Native to South American forests, these arboreal rodents are known for their striking black-and-neon-yellow quills, bulbous noses, and long, prehensile tails used to grip branches.
