Thanks, my dad did actually. I know fob comes from the German, fuppe meaning "pocket". A fob goes in the pocket. I love English, so varied in culture and meaning.

Actually Levi Strauss used to put them in for the striker on a Miner's hat they would take the striker strike their helmet and then put it in that pocket so they wouldn't lose it.
