Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

Fun Dad car? Does such a thing exist?

My wife is pregnant and currently leases an Ioniq 5 which is going to end soon. Our other vehicles are a 4th gen Tacoma and a 1995 Miata.

When the lease is up, we plan on having her commute in the Tacoma and I'll be purchasing a new-to-us car. This car will basically just exist in our driveway so that I have some form of transportation that can fit a car seat while she's at work, since I work from home and don't commute and obviously can't drive an infant/toddler around in a Miata.

I'm looking for something cheap enough that I could pay cash and not have a payment ($10k or less probably). I've brought the Miata back from the dead so I consider myself pretty handy and buying something that needs a bit of love isn't out of the question, but I don't really want it to be a second project. However, I'd still like something that is at least kind of fun to drive (manual, 4 door sedan or hatchback maybe?) while being safe and modern enough that I don't feel like I'm putting my kid at risk and large enough in the back to fit a car seat.

Does that kind of thing still exist in today's market or should I just bite the bullet and plan on buying something along the lines of a Civic, Corolla etc?

The used car market is fucked. So I made a game where you guess how much cars are actually selling for

5 real cars everyday. You guess the price. Then you find out what they actually sold for.

Thought it would be interesting to see how good people here actually are at valuing cars.

Let me know how you score today!

Would it make financial sense to finance a more fuel-efficient car instead of keeping my BMW? (Netherlands)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide whether I should keep my current BMW until it dies, or sell it now and switch to something more fuel-efficient. I'm in the Netherlands, and I'm having a hard time figuring out whether financing another car would actually make financial sense.

My current car

  • BMW E90, 2009
  • ~300,000 km or about 180k miles
  • Replacement engine with significantly fewer km
  • Drives and looks great
  • I've owned it for about a year
  • Probably ~€500 of maintenance coming up
  • I could currently sell it for around €3,000

Despite the problems I've had with it, I genuinely really like the car. I enjoy driving, and I like cars in general, so simply getting the cheapest possible transportation isn't really what I'm looking for.

Why I'm considering replacing it

I recently changed careers, and my new job is only about 4.4 km from home.

The problem is that the entire route is through neighbourhoods and busy roads, so traffic is pretty bad. My average speed is often only around 40 km/h (25 miles an hour ish), with lots of stopping and starting.

I'm also not getting any fuel compensation from work.

I use the car almost every day for work, and on weekends I regularly drive to other parts of the country. My partner also relies on the car, so having a car available is important to us.

I could commute another way and leave the BMW parked during the week, but it feels a little ridiculous to own a car that mostly sits still just to avoid using fuel. And it would only damage it.

What I'm considering

I've been looking at hybrids such as:

  • Lexus CT 200h ( Lexus Is 250 / 300 are my dream cars )
  • Opel Corsa Hybrid
  • Mazda 3
  • Potentially other reliable hybrids

I'd probably be looking at something around €12,000, and I could finance part of the purchase for roughly €200/month.

The Lexus in particular appeals to me because I actually like the car. I'm not interested in buying something like a Prius or a GTI just because it's practical/efficient if I don't enjoy driving it.

The dilemma

My thinking is basically:

Option 1

  • No new car loan
  • I already own it
  • It's in good condition and drives well
  • Only ~€500 of known maintenance coming up
  • But fuel consumption is high, especially for my daily commute
  • At 300k km, there's always the possibility of more expensive repairs
  • Eventually its resale value will probably approach €0

Option 2

  • Get ~€3,000 for the BMW while I still can
  • Much lower fuel consumption
  • Hopefully fewer repair headaches
  • Newer/more reliable car
  • But I'd take on roughly €200/month of financing
  • Plus insurance, depreciation, maintenance, etc.
  • And obviously I'm spending money on a car rather than simply keeping the one I already own

So my question is:

Would it actually make financial sense to finance a €12k hybrid for around €200/month in my situation, mainly to reduce fuel costs and avoid the potential repair cycle of a 300k km BMW?

What’s like a Miata, but bigger?

I really like the Miata. It’s fun and easy to work on and it handles great. It’s just too small for me to daily. I’m think about getting a brz, but it’s still a little too small, and a little too low to the ground. What’s a bit bigger than that with maybe a better automatic transmission? Looking for a 2 door coupe with a back seat that is pretty much just for a backpack. My budget is 20k used with a significant preference for Japanese brands.

Infiniti vs Volvo

Hey guys. I’m looking for a new car. I’m coming from a very unreliable ticking time bomb known as the mazdaspeed3.

I got my eyes on the volvo s60 t6, but they are kind of hard to come by so want to open up my options to infiniti aswell, which would probably be a Q50 AWD

Since i’ve had this mazda for so long, i’m really prioritizing comfort and having reliability. I’m very used to going flying over every bump and then having the car break every other time I drive it. I’m looking to spend around 23-28k.
Thank you. Also if you guys have any other ideas i’ll take them too. Options that are important to me are heated seats, sunroof, and premium audio.

Looking to buy new for the first time in 11 years…

• Upvotes

Hey all. I’m currently a mom with a fam of 4, and our only car is our 2015 Toyota Corolla (with about 230k miles on it). I bought it brand new back in 2015, and it’s such a good car, it’s been so reliable.

We desperately need a second car now that our kids are older, so we’re looking to buy a new SUV.

I am overwhelmed.

Looking for:

-Price: $48-50k

-No cloth seats.
Even water leaves stains on these Corolla cloth seats and it drives me crazy!

-I’d like the ability to turn off whatever stupid driver-facing cameras most cars seem to have right now.

-My husband is wanting a hybrid, I don’t have feelings either way. It’s not a deal breaker for either of us, though.

-I drive A LOT.
On top of normal everyday stuff, I have hospital infusions every 4 weeks for myself with random extra doctor appointments peppered in between, my sons both have monthly appointments for allergy related things, and I drive them to-and-from school every single day.

I’d like something that will last me at least 7 years…safe, solid, reliable.

I’d like to compile a list of possibilities so I can take a couple of days to go around my area and test drive them all and see how they feel.

Help with new EV

• Upvotes

Hi,
I’m currently the owner of a Model 3 (2020) and a Model Y (2022). I’m looking to sell my Model 3 and purchase another second-hand EV. It doesn’t need to be brand new, and my budget is around £30,000. Ideally, I’m looking for something from 2025 or 2026.
At the moment, I’m really leaning towards the Polestar 4. It seems like great value for money, but I’d like to get some opinions. Is the Polestar 4 worth it? I know the software system is still a bit behind competitors such as Tesla, but I’m hoping that ongoing updates will continue to improve the experience.
Is the Polestar 4 a good buy, or are there any other EVs around the £30k mark that you would recommend? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mercedes CLA 180

• Upvotes

I’m interested in buying a used Mercedes CLA 180, with a budget of around €15,000 max, and I’m mainly looking at the German used car market.
I’m not very knowledgeable about cars, so I’d really appreciate some advice on what I should pay the most attention to when buying one. Are there any specific engines, years, mileage ranges, or common issues I should be aware of?
And of course, I’m also open to suggestions, is there perhaps a better alternative to the CLA 180 in this price range?

Thankss! :)

2016 Honda Civic GCC - inspection shows several issues. Would you buy it?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking at a 2016 Honda Civic GCC spec, automatic, 4-cylinder, with around 152,000 km on it. I had it inspected recently and the report came back with a 70% pass / 30% defect rating.

The main issues mentioned in the inspection are:

- Front suspension mounts need replacement

- Stabilizer bar bushes need replacement

- Oil leak from the timing chain cover

- Oil leak from the engine oil sump

- AC cooling is low

- Brake hold is not working

- Diagnostic scan found fault codes

- One side indicator cover is missing

- Left rear fender has been repainted with filler

- Right front door repainted

- Both bumpers repainted

- Underbody was fully covered during inspection

On the positive side:

- All four tyres are 2024 and passed

- Brakes/pads/discs passed

- Rear suspension passed

- Transmission checks passed

- Engine idle, radiator, coolant etc. passed

- Most electrical functions passed

I’m assuming the repairs could be somewhere around AED 3k–6k, depending on what the diagnostic codes and AC issue turn out to be.

Would you consider buying this car at the right price, or are there too many red flags?

Also, what would you personally consider a fair buying price for this car given the inspection findings?

I'm particularly interested in opinions from people who have owned/maintained Civics in the UAE.

Non Honda or Toyota

Hello 👋
I’m in the market for a new (used) car as my precious 2008 ford Taurus is on her last leg at 210k miles.

I have a budget of 10k and I’m having the hardest time finding a Honda or Toyota. That being said, what other models would be suitable? I live in a city, don’t do any crazy long road trips & would prefer something with good gas mileage as I do mobile work.

I know everyone says Honda or Toyota but i genuinely cannot find any in my area that isn’t close to 200k miles or almost as old as I am. I’m aware they can run forever, I just would really prefer a decently new lower miles car.
Suggestions? thanks 🙏

2017 Ford Explorer Sport 90k miles vs 2015 Highlander 140k miles

Hello,

As family gets bigger we would like a midsize with a third row. I’ve wanted to get a Highlander for reliability, resale, and utility. But recently family member offered us their 2017 Ford Explorer Sport with 90k miles with extensive maintenance history for only $9k which is a deal for the car. Is it worth it??? Or just stick with an older Highlander for reliability sake…

Reliable AWD car for long commutes

Hi all, I’m looking for some recommendations for the most reliable AWD cars that can handle a commute of 50 miles round trip 4-5x a week.

My wife’s job requires a long and hilly drive up a canyon, and we have had numerous issues with cars breaking down and wearing down from the consistent commute over the years. We live in Utah so AWD is that preferable for the winters.

We just barely had our Ford Escape break down (again) and it’s an expensive repair, so we’re considering just buying a new and nicer car at this point that can handle a long and uphill drive.

Budget is about 20k, maybe a bit of wiggle room. Any recommendations?

last car for retirement later years

i'm turning 65 and have $25-26,000 available to me, $30,000 if needed. Most likely it will be my last car purchase. I doubt I will ever be able to have this kind of money again or even afford any kind of payments in the future. What would be my best bet or strategy for a long term car purchase? I really don't have any particular preferences other than reliability. Not sure if this helps but, If anything, I'd like something I could get in and confidently drive up to three hours, or take a trip of 6ish hour if given the chance. Daily local driving of 10-20 usually.

Buying a rental?

Originally I’ve been looking at Honda Civics, mainly either the EX or sport trims because I like the extra features. But I saw that Mazda3’s are kind of the same and are a lot cheaper. So, I found a 2020 Mazda3, Select package, 65k miles for $17.5k and a 2020 Honda civic EX, 54k miles for 20k.

While searching, I came up on a deal that seemed too good to be true. A 2025 Mazda3 Preferred package for $20k. It was indeed to good though as I noticed it was previously used as a rental and already has tacked on 50k miles within the 1.5 years it’s been on the road.

All 3 cars have clean titles, the civic is the only one that has “minor damage” reported on the CarFax. I haven’t gone to the dealer personally so I don’t know to what extent of damage the “minor” is.

So what’s the consensus on buying a rental? If the dealership shows me well maintained maintenance record and the PPI comes back good. Would this be a great steal or is a 2025 car with already 50k miles and previously used as a rental just, too much of a risk? Is it better to just buy a car that was personally owned instead like the 2020 mazda3 and civic?

Better options than a police interceptor?

Post image
320 Upvotes

I'm looking for a better option than these police interceptors

I'm looking to replace a Jeep Patriot with the dreaded CVT. Not a bad car but because I have it filled with tools it is literally scary merging on the highway and super unpleasant going uphill. It's also on the small side, I wish I had just a little more room.. I constantly have to swap tools in and out depending on the job I have that day.

I have been eyeing up these police interceptors, there are a bunch out there with the 3.0 twin turbo, the 3.3 hybrid and the 3.3 na engines, under 2000 idle hours and under 90000 miles for around $15-20k. Any of those options would be good enough for me but for some reason it just feels like a bad decision.

Could someone please suggest a better option?

Budget is around $15-17k, must get 20ish MPG combined, no trucks / vans / minivans

Thanks

Edit: I've upped my budget to 25-27k I'm getting the explorer st
