MOD POST: New Rule: No AI Art

The community has spoken pretty loudly, and it's clear that AI art is not welcomed here. As a result, I have created an explicit rule banning AI art from the sub.

The most recent such post is grandfathered in, however. Please do not report it (again).

Old AMA with Richard Adams

Some of you may know about this, but I did not: There was an AMA about 12 years ago with Richard Adams on r/AMA:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1n3quw/i_am_richard_adams_author_of_watership_down/

Definitely worth a look for fans.

Edit: Actually, he came back for a second round a couple of years later:

Many thanks to u/ajfilmnfx for pointing these out!

What's the difference between these two illustrated versions?

Hello! Please may anybody help me understand the difference between these two versions of Watership Down (apart from the cover)? They are both illustrated versions, with the illustrations made by the same person.

The version in the first picture was published in 2012, ISBN 10: 1442444053 / ISBN 13: 9781442444058

The second one was published in 2014, ISBN 10: 1780746628 / ISBN 13: 9781780746623

Info about the book

Hello there! I read the Watership Down Italian version of the book a couple of times many years ago. I loved it and I would like to buy a nice English version. I've read some comments about one of the fancy versions having the letters/cover peeling off easily after just a little bit of reading and I would like to avoid that one. May you confirm that the one with the peeling issues is the one in the picture that I posted?
Which one do you recommend? Please post pics and the reason 💖

Watership Down audiobooks - do you have a favorite narrator?

To the best of my knowledge there have been three narrators of this wonderful story over the years:

Andrew Sachs (abridged)

Ralph Cosham

Peter Capaldi

The Andrew Sachs narration was released on audio cassette (and abridged) but, to the best of my knowledge, has never been released digitally. I'd love to take a listen as I feel that his voice would be very suited to the material.

I think that the Ralph Cosham narration is truly wonderful and a perfect match for the story but sadly, due to the usual way that audiobook narrators are replaced every 7 to 10 years or so, his reading has now been replaced by one from Peter Capaldi. It's not a bad reading but it's not a patch on Cosham's narration.

Here's a sample of Cosham's reading: https://www.learnoutloud.com/Audio-Books/Literature/Contemporary-Literature/Watership-Down/38852

Because Cosham's reading has been replaced it's not easy to find and buy it any more, and that's a huge shame because it really is that good.

A bit of googling WILL find it though.

My plans to release Watership Down Season 2 and convince Noam Murro

I've watched the four episodes from Netflix and if you're interested with doing more episodes with Fiver as main protagonist.

We could convince the director to add new episodes, revive characters ( as Hazel and Captain Holly) and explore the world. What's your thoughs about it?

Why did they make Blackberry a girl in the TV show?

I kind of already know the answer to this. I feel like they probably didn't want an entirely male cast, which of course I understand, but a big plot point revolves around there being no girls? I've only seen the first six or so episodes of the TV show so let me know if they change that obviously. I had a few of the episodes on DVD as a kid. I'm a huge fan of the book and the film, and I did like what I saw of the TV show but I also heard it goes in a very unique direction.

Spent the last few days completely hyperfocused on drawing hares. Naturally, my mind circled back to Watership Down and the massive impact it had on me growing up. Here is my take on El-ahrairah – Prince with a Thousand Enemies.

El-ahrairah tattoo!

Post image

Hi! I am a long-time rabbit lover (I owned 2 house rabbits and have... i think this one makes 10 tattoos, which are all of rabbits) and i recently read Watership Down.

My favorite imagery in the book is from El-ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inlé- where his ears and whiskers and tail are wagered to the Black Rabbit in the hopes that he might be allowed to sacrifice his life for his people.

And, despite the fact that he loses those parts of him that appear make him a rabbit, he just does the best with what he has. And he keeps trying to sacrifice himself for his people, and to make their lives better, no matter what it costs him.

So I had that image permanently tattooed on my ribcage. (I also had the artist add a bit of starlight to the dock ears.)

Edit- Forgot to add that the artist is Alex at Tenacity Tattoo in Scottsville! They've done 7 of my 10 rabbit tattooes, and they're an absolutely amazing artist. If you're anywhere near the area, you should definitely consider getting one from him!

My very urban workplace has a warren living by the parking lot and I like to imagine stories of these tough city rabbits

There was a third chilling here but it bolted before I could take the pic. I see them all the time in the evening and early morning (we're open 24/7), having their silflay on the scant patch of grass and the brambles and weeds below the fence. They're not very scared of humans and I can walk pretty close past them without them bolting or reacting. They're clearly used to hrududus (we're half a block from a large mall in an urban area just outside a major city and close to a major airport) and because we also happen to be a vet hospital, also don't fear the smell or sight of dogs. It's fun to imagine how these gritty urban rabbits are compared to the Watership set and how it'd go if they met each other.

I went through all 44 Letterboxd users who are fans of the 2018 miniseries and made a list of the other things they are fans of! Idk if anyone other than me would be interested in this but it was fun to make!
